Simple looking elementary school math problem leaves people stumped - can you get the answer in 30 seconds?

Daily Mail01-06-2025

A seemingly straightforward math problem has sparked debate online after leaving social media users confused over the correct answer.
The brain teaser, which appears simple at first glance, has divided the internet with people coming up with different solutions to what appears like a basic math problem.
Twitter user @BholanathDutta shared the math riddle with followers, asking 'Can you solve this #math' alongside an image decorated with colorful flowers.
The post shows a calculation that looks simple: 500 + 450 ÷ 5.
The post has now been viewed more than 3,000 times, with dozens of commenters sharing their answers.
But not everyone agrees on the solution.
The overwhelming majority of respondents believe the answer is 590, with many users showing their working to prove their point.
One user methodically explained their approach.
They wrote: '500 + 450 ÷ 5 = ? 450 ÷ 5 = 90, 500 + 90 = 590.'
Another person reached the same conclusion, posting: '450/5=90, 500+90=590.'
However, not everyone reached the popular answer, as several users offered completely different solutions.
A handful of commenters suggested alternative answers, with one stating the result should be 190.
Another claimed the correct answer was 945.
A couple of users argued the answer should be 19.
The confusion appears to stem from different interpretations of the order of operations.
That is the principle that determines which calculations should be performed first in complex equations.
According to standard math rules, division should be completed before addition, which would support the majority answer of 590.
Problem solvers should use the conventional order of operations - which goes by the acronym PEMDAS: Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division (from left to right), and Addition and Subtraction (from left to right).
Using that, the calculation would indeed be: 450 ÷ 5 = 90, then 500 + 90 = 590.
The viral math puzzle joins a long list of seemingly simple problems that have recently gone viral online.

Meghan Markle claims new As Ever wine and £21 honey has nearly sold out already

Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, is now selling a selection of new food items, including an apricot spread and a limited edition orange blossom honey, the latter costing £21 per jar Meghan Markle has claimed her brand's new food products - including a £21-per-jar honey - have almost sold out within hours of release. The Duchess of Sussex, 43, has expanded her As Ever range with several new items, including a rosé wine, an apricot spread and the limited edition orange blossom honey. She said most of the first batches of these treats almost sold out within minutes of release, a claim which left some fans and critics puzzled. ‌ Social media users went online to suggest the former actress was "playing the 'sold out' game", an approach they say salespeople use to encourage customers to swiftly part with cash. However, Prince Harry's wife did enjoy success with the first release of products under the brand - with the likes of a jam, honey, herbal teas and flower sprinkles all snaffled within hours. ‌ Suggesting this was the case again, Meghan says in an Instagram video she wishes she had "so much more inventory". She adds: "We are nearly sold out on everything, and I can't believe it... Thanks everybody." In the clip, the mum of two explains how the flower sprinkles have again proved to be the most popular item - just as they were in April. Most items on As Ever's website have "sold out" beside them, including the flower sprinkles and apricot spread. But trolls are still not convinced, writing on Twitter (formerly X) they felt Meghan was assuming "people were stupid". One person posted: "She is playing the 'sold out' game and thinking we are all stupid. You fool no one Meghan Markle." Another shared: "Wait the only new thing she dropped was the apricot spread. WTF. And it sold out after 20 mins. Meghan must think people are really stupid." Among further harsh digs, another critic added: "Wow they have super small quantities. The apricot and tea already sold out." But in full, Meghan says: "We spent so much time making sure we had so much more inventory. That's why we took the time and you guys are doing it again. We are nearly sold out on everything. And I can't believe it - even flower sprinkles which I knew would be the big one again. So that has more inventory than all of it and that is also about to sell out." While the apricot spread and honey went on sale on Friday, the Napa Valley rosé wine will be available from July 1. The rosé is Meghan's first foray into the wine market - with the product sourced from the famous region of California , up the west coast from her Montecito mansion.

TikTok influencer sparks debate after getting FIRE BRIGADE to let her into her flat when she locked herself out

A TikTok influencer has sparked a fiery debate online after calling firefighters to her home after locking herself out. Lindsey Lowell, who goes by @lindseyinlondon on TikTok, left many furious online after calling the fire brigade to help her get into her Clapham flat. While zooming home on a Lime bike, she shared that she didn't have keys for her flat and that her roommate was on holiday. 'So I have a few options,' she said. 'I either try and scale the wall and climb through my window or I go to the fire department and asked them to bring a ladder to my house.' And while some social media users suggested she stay at an AirBnB, a hotel or even go to a pub, Lindsey steamed ahead to ask the firemen for some help. In a follow-up clip, the TikToker showed her open window as she devised a possible plan to climb up the wall. 'We're walking to the fire department to see if they will bring a ladder to my house to let me crawl through my little window,' she said. She continued: 'That would be so idyllic. Maybe I should stop and get them some pints on the way.' After speaking to a firefighter at the station, she was informed that the fire engine was out on a job near her home. But, she was told to ask for 'firefighter Jack' who would help her get into her flat. 'I see the firefighters,' she said. 'Once they finish up at this job, they are going to come over to my house and they're gonna bring the white ladder... and they are going to get me into my house. 'I am so overjoyed right now.' Footage then shows the fire crew use its turntable ladder to reach an open window and gain access to the house. However, the involvement of the fire service has caused an uproar online, with many questioning why the emergency service was being used. One wrote: 'Seriously? You got locked out and called firefighers? I bet locksmith would've been just fine.' Another added: 'I'm confused, is there a reason you spent public money rather than getting a locksmith? ' While a third said: 'I can't believe the fire brigade came and did this, we have locksmiths.' 'Why didn't you just knock on a few peoples doors to ask for a ladder?,' a fourth wrote. Some leapt to her defence. One person said: 'All those saying locksmiths; in London an emergency locksmith charges just shy of £1000!!!!!' A second added: 'People are hating on her for this, but I think it's a smart move. She hasn't called 999, she's just gone and asked, after all they could have said no. It's on their way back to the station and probably took them like 15min max.' However, most were left confused over the use of the fire service. 'Who casually goes to the fire department to ask to borrow a ladder because you locked yourself out?,' one wrote. Someone else added: 'You called firefighters because you were locked out? That is £1000s of public money. Why did you not get a locksmith?' Another wrote: 'You called firefighters because you were locked out? That is £1000s of public money. Why did you not get a locksmith?'.

Love Island fans 'work out real reason' for Toni and Emily's brutal argument

The Love Island villa erupted into chaos yet again tonight, and it was a double blow for bombshell Emily after Conor expressed his interest in Megan as Toni called her irritating It looks like the whole Love Island villa is in for a switch up as Islanders heads continue to turn. Last night, heads began to turn as Harry took Yasmin for a trip to the Hideaway Terrace. Tonight, the focus was on Emily and Toni as they erupted into a huge unexpected argument. The confrontation came in the mist of Conor, who is currently coupled up with Emily making a beeline for Megan, who is currently in a strong couple with Tommy. However, it wasn't the only blow for Emily, as Toni announced she was "irritating" her. ‌ Surprising Meg and Dejon with her thoughts on Emily, Toni told them: "I can't stand to listen to her… 'Little Miss Sunshine' all the time.' ‌ Later that night, it was made clear to Emily that Toni had been bad mouthing her. Elsewhere, in a chat with Shakira, Toni expressed her interest in Conor, who she was coupled up with before Emily. Despite this, Toni insisted her problem with Emily wasn't anything to do with Conor. She later revealed her problems with Emily started when either Toni and Malisha were about to go home - claiming Emily was in a good mood during a bad situation. "Read the room," she told her. The two went back and forth as Emily exclaimed: "Some people just want to cause a problem." Toni responded: "It has absolutely nothing to do with this, I don't give a f**k if you're with Conor." ‌ Although some fans believed the reason was secretly Conor, others think they've worked why the two were arguing - believing something had happened off camera. Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, one fan penned: "Imma stick beside Toni cos theres defo something we aint seen for her to be so done," while another agreed: "There must be more to the story because Emily handled the Callum thing so well and Toni seemed to appreciate that. I've not really seen them interact much since." Another suggested: "I think Toni didn't just crash out on Emily for nothing. I think Emily seems like a nice girl but playing teams like taking info from Shakira X Toni's team to the mean girls' team of Megan Meg and Helena and nobody would be cool with that. Just my thought." ‌ Elsewhere, Harry's head turned once again, and this time it's back to Shakira. The pair coupled up on the second day, causing Sophie to be dumped from the villa. However, things didn't work out when Harry moved onto Helena, but it looks like he's now regretting not exploring things further with Shakira. 'I wanted to see how you were feeling, I think initially you were number one and I f****d it," he said. How will things unfold now everyone's head has turned once again?
