Netflix's live-action adaption of cherished sci-fi franchise 'accomplishes a rare feat'
In 2024, Netflix unveiled the first season of a fresh live-action series that breathed new life into a cherished franchise.
Avatar: The Last Airbender made its debut on the streaming platform on February 22, 2024, boasting eight episodes, most of which were an hour long. Inspired by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko's animated Nickelodeon series, Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender reimagines the saga of Aang through state-of-the-art technology and live-action scenes.
The series was initially announced in September 2018, with DiMartino and Konietzko slated to serve as showrunners and executive producers. However, due to creative disagreements, the duo parted ways with the project in June 2020, paving the way for Albert Kim to take over as showrunner.
Featuring a star-studded cast including Gordon Cormier, Lee Paul, Kim Daniel Dae, Liu Dallas, Ousley Ian, Ken Leung, and Kiawentiio, Avatar: The Last Airbender is set in a fictional universe where humanity is divided into four nations, each associated with one of the four elements: Air Nomads, Fire Nation, Earth Kingdom, and Water Tribes.
Within each nation, there are select individuals known as 'benders' who possess the ability to telekinetically control the element of their respective nation. The series follows the adventures of Aang and the immense responsibility bestowed upon him, reports the Express.
In a recent blog post, showrunner Albert Kim shared his initial reservations upon being approached by Netflix to lead the series: "My first thought was, 'Why? What is there I could do or say with the story that wasn't done or said in the original?' But the more I thought about it, the more intrigued I became."
He expressed excitement about the possibilities afforded by modern VFX technology: "VFX technology has advanced to the point where a live-action version can not only faithfully translate what had been done in animation - it can bring a rich new visual dimension to a fantastic world. We'll be able to see bending in a real and visceral way we've never seen before."
The live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender has garnered a 62 per cent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, eliciting mixed reactions from critics. One reviewer acknowledged the nostalgia and enduring appeal of the series: "It's undeniable that Netflix's adaptation is a reminder of how much we missed the world of Avatar. It's still so much fun, and there's still so much to learn with messages that ring even more true today.."
Another critic praised the show for its inclusivity and faithfulness to the source material: "Avatar: The Last Airbender accomplishes a rare feat for a live-action adaptation of an animated series: It brings new people into its world while giving fans of the original more than enough to keep them watching."
Yet, some felt the series didn't quite live up to expectations, with one reviewer commenting: "The result is a charming but imperfect adaptation that vastly improves upon the 2010 film - but never soars quite as high as the original animated show."
While one reviewer enthused: "The Airbender franchise has confidently revived itself; this won't be the last we see of it," another opined: "The live-action adaptation is the antithesis of Hollywood's attempt from years ago. It takes big risks but they all serve the story in an authentic way. Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender realises a new and faithful take on Nickelodeon's greatest series."
Avatar: The Last Airbender earned accolades with nominations for Outstanding Special Visual Effects In A Season Or A Movie and Outstanding Sound Editing For A Comedy Or Drama Series (One Hour) at the 2024 Emmy Awards for its episode titled Legends.
Audiences have been more receptive, with one viewer saying: "It's solid entertainment: fast-moving, action-packed, with decent fight scenes and some appealing performances, all done on a generous Netflix budget."
Meanwhile, another fan raved: "A fantastic live action adaptation from the anime. Something even die-hards for the original can absolutely appreciate this. Well done! Can't wait for season 2."
And another enthused: "The most engaging show I've watched in years. I absolutely loved it. Can't wait for the next two seasons. This live action adaptation really does the original justice and has made me fall in love with this world all over again."
Netflix has confirmed that Avatar: The Last Airbender has been given the green light for both a second and third season, aiming to wrap up the tale in the latter one.

Pixar film risks breaking devastating record despite being hailed 'dazzling'
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Pixar's latest offering Elio has wowed critics, but it looks set to make a devastating new record for the studio. The animated sci-fi film tells the story of 11-year-old boy Elio Solis (Yonas Kibreab) who dreams of being abducted by aliens after feeling out of place on Earth for so long. He is accidentally beamed up to the Communiverse, an organisation which has representatives from several galaxies, where he is mistakenly identified as Earth's ambassador. It currently holds an 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes among critics, but it could become the lowest domestic debut ever for Pixar. Box office reports from Variety show the film grossed $9 million (£6,6M) on Friday across 3,750 locations. It has been predicted that this could mean Elio will fall well behind 2023's Elemental, the film which currently has the lowest domestic debut, at $29M (£21.5M) The critics' consensus for the film could not be further away from its low box office, reading: 'Catapulted by its theme of building self-esteem, Pixar's latest cosmic wonder Elio boasts a fanciful world of original creations to dazzling effect.' 'Elio is another knockout, a quiet but determined shooting star that earns its place in the galaxy,' Tribune News Service wrote. Movie Mom added: 'Pixar's latest has everything we love about Pixar, a heartwarming story with endless imagination, charm, and wisdom, about an endearing character and the fears and joys of being human.' Others, however, pointed out the predictability of Elio's plot, with saying: 'Schmaltzy yet sincere, Elio, the latest from Pixar, is as predictable as they come but as tender as they can get.' Paste Magazine added: 'As a story about children finding a place to belong, discovering their true sense of self and realizing that parents and parental figures love you even when they don't always understand you, Elio is a lovely, if not particularly original story.' The Daily Beast summarised: 'For all its overt '80s homages, there's something timeless about Elio. too. It may be mid-tier Pixar, but that's still likely to make it one of the better animated offerings of the year.' More Trending Speaking ahead of the film's release, Kibreab opened up to Screen Rant about learning he had scored the role of Elio alongside Zoe Saldana who voices Elio's aunt Olga. 'I love all the Pixar movies and I watched them all the time and I still do today. And just to be in one, in an original Pixar movie, is such a pinch-me moment,' he said. They both reflected on what they had learned from each other while filming, with Emilia Perez star Saldana revealing, 'He's been teaching me how to be Alpha and Gen Z,' learning everything about 'rizz' and Skibidi Toilet. Jules Thomas: How my leukaemia was caused by Sophie Toscan du Plantier stress
For over two years Jules Thomas, the former partner of the Sophie Toscan du Plantier murder suspect Ian Bailey, spared her three daughters from the devastating truth that she is suffering from leukaemia. 'I just couldn't bring myself to tell them, to give my girls that worry and upset. I kept it to myself for as long as I could,' she told The Sunday Times. 'Eventually I decided they should know, so I wrote letters at the same time to each of my daughters to tell them.' Thomas now counts herself among the 220 people in Ireland every year who are diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia, an incurable, slowly progressing blood cancer. The Welsh-born landscape artist has been embroiled in a legal battle against Netflix for several years. In a long-running High Court case, Thomas claims she was defamed in the three-part documentary series Sophie: A Murder in West Cork. She has alleged that the show, screened in 2021, contains a number of inaccuracies and she also claims in her legal action against the streaming giant and the production company Lightbox Media for injurious falsehood and infliction of emotional suffering. All of these claims are, however, understood to be denied by Netflix and Light Box Media, which are fully defending the action.

Bridgerton star Jonathan Bailey has opened up about joining the Jurassic Park franchise, with him appearing alongside Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali in the new film Actor Jonathan Bailey has teased that he risked his life whilst working on Jurassic World Rebirth. He's revealed that he filmed alongside potentially lethal snakes for his role but shared his excitement over the experience. He's shared that he was instructed on safety measures to avoid a fatal encounter. As reported by the Daily Star, Jonathan recalled: "When you're making a movie, you want to feel the world of the movie as much as possible." He went on to say that he worked on scenes in snake-infested waters for the project. He said: "And my gosh, do you feel it when you're up to your waist in snake-infested waters. You have snake wranglers around you who do make you feel safe, but they also say things like 'be careful around this one. If you get bit, you die in 10 seconds'." He expressed excitement over appearing in the franchise through, saying: "That kind of moment speaks to the visceral thrills that Jurassic movies are all about! I had never had that kind of experience on a set before. It was all very exciting and I hope it's matched by the film." Jonathan suggested that he didn't shy away from stunts whilst on location in Thailand. Describing one intense scene from the production, as reported by the outlet, he said that his "inner child" was "screaming with delight". He said: "We had to shoot a scene where my character must pull someone back into a boat because she's falling off the side. I had water cannons blasting me, the boat's flipping around, and my inner child, which isn't all that inner, was just screaming with delight." Jonathan stars as palaeontologist Dr Henry Loomis in Jurassic World Rebirth, which is the seventh instalment in the long-running film franchise that previously starred Chris Pratt. He leads the cast with Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali. Jonathan has shared that he relished the opportunity to play the character. He's set to reprise the role in sequel Wicked: For Good (2025), which is scheduled to be released in November. Jonathan is also known for playing Lord Anthony Bridgerton in Netflix series Bridgerton. The show launched on the streaming platform in 2020 and his character was the focus of the second season, which aired in 2022. He's teased that he's been a fan of Jurassic Park for years, having been introduced to the franchise as a child. He said: "I was five when my family took me to Jurassic Park, so a questionable choice by my parents. The characters were so vivid and because it was Spielberg, it was a sumptuous escapist delight."
