#SHOWBIZ: Hans Isaac: Finas to consider ending 'open door policy' for foreign films

KUALA LUMPUR: Following the disappointing box office performance of Blood Brothers: Bara Naga in Indonesia, despite it being Malaysia's highest-grossing film of 2025, the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas) is considering ending its 'open door policy' towards international films.
Its chairman, Datuk Hans Isaac, 53, expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of reciprocity in how Malaysian films are treated abroad, particularly in Indonesia.
"I'm saying this not just as Finas chairman but also as a filmmaker. We open all doors for them to screen their films in Malaysia," he told reporters when met recently.
"However, when we take our films abroad, although they grant us entry, the process, marketing, and structural hurdles are extremely challenging."
"For example, in Indonesia, they complicate the situation, whereas here in Malaysia, we have always made it very easy," he added.
Hans further said that if foreign countries make it difficult for Malaysian films to penetrate their markets, Malaysia should impose the same conditions on them.
"If they offer five slots, we'll offer five. If they give ten, we'll give ten. It has to be on a first-come, first-served basis."
"We can't reserve special slots for anyone. This is similar to the Mandatory Screening Scheme, which may also be considered for foreign films. However, implementing this will require processes, proposals, and a thorough review," he explained.
To further promote local films on the global stage, Finas plans to launch a major initiative around September or October.
"Finas will serve as a bridge between countries. We'll help film producers tap into larger markets, even beyond Indonesia," Hans added.
"Let's just put it that way for now. If Blood Brothers failed in Indonesia in terms of earnings, I'll prove that their audience was wrong. Finas will take the film to bigger markets elsewhere. Discussions are already underway."
It was previously reported that Blood Brothers, which grossed RM76 million at the box office in Malaysia, was screened in only 40 cinemas in Indonesia.
Its director, Syafiq Yusof, also revealed that fewer than five Malaysian films were screened in Indonesia in 2024, whereas over 100 Indonesian films entered the Malaysian market with ease.

Intel, Vishay set to expand semiconductor presence in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) has held discussions with leading tech giant, Intel, regarding the latter's plans on reinvestment and expansion of its operations in Malaysia. Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said Intel has invested RM50 billion to-date, and provided employment opportunities to 12,300 local workers. 'Intel's presence in Malaysia since 1972 has grown in tandem with the country's rise as a global semiconductor hub. 'This meeting reflects Intel's continued confidence in Malaysia as its key investment destination outside the United States,' he said in a post on the social media platform X today. He added that the Malaysian government, through MITI and the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), remains fully committed to supporting Intel's expansion in the country. 'Under the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP2030), and the National Semiconductor Strategy (NSS), we will continue to strengthen a sustainable and competitive industrial ecosystem,' Tengku Zafrul said. Meanwhile, in a separate post, the MITI minister said a United States-based manufacturer of discrete semiconductors and passive electronic components, Vishay Intertechnology, has expressed its intention to expand its operations in Malaysia. 'They already have a presence in Melaka, and the rise in the number of high-tech semiconductor facilities is in line with the objectives of NIMP2030 and NSS,' he added. Tengku Zafrul had led a working visit to Washington, United States, on June 18-20.

Trade talks 'progress well', Malaysia and US aim to finalise before 90-day deadline

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia says its trade talks with the US in Washington DC are progressing well, about two weeks before the 90-day pause of the latter's unilateral tariff implementation expires. Malaysia said both parties had agreed to intensify efforts toward a mutually acceptable outcome for key stakeholders in the two countries. The country faces a 24 per cent tariff on certain exports to the US unless both sides reach an agreement before the 90-day pause ends on July 8. Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry today said its separate meetings with US Trade Representative ambassador Jamieson Greer and US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick had made positive progress. "The Malaysian delegation led by Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz ensured that the meetings with the US Trade Representative and the US Secretary of Commerce was also optimised as a platform to enhance bilateral investment and trade ties between Malaysia and the US. "These will also form part of the expected outcome of the negotiations, which the ministry hopes will be finalised before the end of the 90-day pause on tariff implementation," it said in a statement. Tengku Zafrul, who led a working visit to Washington DC on June 18, said the negotiations are expected to boost Malaysia's supply chain resilience. He added that the outcomes could benefit local small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and generate more high-paying jobs for Malaysians. "All these will further strengthen Malaysia's position as a choice investment destination in the region, while driving the Madani economic transformation agenda towards a high-tech and higher-income nation," he added. Tengku Zafrul said Malaysia's exports to the US recorded their eighth straight month of double-digit growth in May 2025, with the US remaining one of the country's top three export destinations over the past decade. He noted that a significant portion of these exports supports US domestic industries, particularly in sectors like electrical and electronics, semiconductors, medical devices, machinery, equipment and components. "Malaysia has also been an important source of intermediate goods to US-based manufacturing industries. "The ministry has also remained steadfast in doing its utmost to uphold Malaysia's interests in all trade and investment relations with all trading partners, particularly in maintaining the integrity of Malaysia's domestic commitments and its sovereign rights," he said.

Kedah records investments totalling RM4.2 billion in 1Q 2025

ALOR SETAR: Kedah recorded RM4.2 billion in investments in the first quarter of this year (1Q 2025), which is expected to generate over 1,400 job opportunities. Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor said the manufacturing sector accounted for the largest share with RM3.9 billion in investments -- the third highest among Malaysian states during the same period. 'The high-value manufacturing sector is expected to continue growing strongly despite the current geopolitical and economic uncertainties. 'This growth is being driven by the development of Phase 4A and Phase 5 of the Kulim Hi-Tech Park, the Kulim Industrial Corridor, and new industrial areas such as the Kedah Rubber City and the Kedah Science Technology Park,' he said. He was speaking at the investiture ceremony in conjunction with the 83rd birthday celebration of the Sultan of Kedah, Al-Aminul Karim Sultan Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah, at Istana Anak Bukit here today. According to Muhammad Sanusi, investors' willingness to invest in Kedah was a manifestation of the stability, transparency, and effectiveness of the state government's policies. Meanwhile, he said the development of the Border Town Corridor has shown positive progress, particularly with the opening of the Inland Clearance Depot (ICD), a logistics hub at the Delapan Special Border Economic Zone in Bukit Kayu Hitam. He said the hub is capable of attracting additional container traffic estimated at 240,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) from southern Thailand, potentially contributing up to RM843 million annually to Kedah's gross domestic product. 'This border town development is further supported by the construction of a connecting road between the Bukit Kayu Hitam Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security Complex and the Sadao Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex in Thailand, which is expected to be completed by September. 'This strategic infrastructure is projected to boost the Malaysia–Thailand bilateral trade from RM117 billion in 2023 to RM141 billion by 2027, benefiting Kedah through increased cross-border economic activities,' he said. Additionally, Muhammad Sanusi said that the state recorded 1.5 million tourist arrivals in 1Q 2025 through ongoing promotional efforts in conjunction with the Visit Kedah Year 2025. 'I am confident that the target of seven million tourists can be achieved through the 170 programmes outlined in the Visit Kedah 2025 calendar of events, including 45 major events that will feature elements of sports, gastronomy, technology, and spirituality,' he added.
