Media Advisory - Governor General to honour excellence in innovation during Canadian Innovation Week

OTTAWA, ON, May 28, 2025 /CNW/ - Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada, will recognize the outstanding contributions of Canada's top innovators during the Governor General's Innovation Awards at Rideau Hall. This honours ceremony will take place during Canadian Innovation Week, which runs from May 26 to May 30, 2025.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Governor General's Innovation Awards, which celebrate excellence in innovation across all sectors of Canadian society and aim to inspire Canadians, particularly youth, to be entrepreneurial innovators. The awards are presented to individuals, teams and organizations whose innovations are truly exceptional, transformative and positively impact the quality of life in Canada.
The awards, which are administered by the Rideau Hall Foundation, are not intended to recognize lifetime achievement or innovations that have not yet demonstrated impact. Rather, by recognizing active, current innovators across the breadth of our economy and society, the awards help foster an active culture that celebrates innovation.

‘It's the first place we've felt safe': Mississauga opens first dedicated refugee reception centre

Mississauga's first dedicated refugee reception centre officially opened its doors Friday, marking a shift from a hotel-based resettlement model to a purpose-built facility offering housing and integration services. The shelter is also intended for government-assisted refugees (GARs) — refugees resettled by the Canadian government who are identified as convention refugees by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. The Polycultural Reception House at 73 King St. W. will provide temporary housing, school enrolment support and employment assistance to newcomers, addressing a long-standing gap in Peel Region's refugee infrastructure. It will also provide a foundation for newcomers to transition into permanent housing. The site was first acquired in October 2024. Ever since the Polycultural Immigrant & Community Services (PICS) began welcoming GARs in January 2025, transitioning away from the hotel-based model. Adam Altmid, chair of PICS' board, said the transition was important. 'This is a more efficient way. It provides a service, it provides all the services in one location, as opposed to a hotel,' Altmid said. He also mentioned having one centre was more cost-effective. 'This new centre is our building, so we're not paying hotel rates to a private enterprise,' he said. At the opening, Mayor Carolyn Parrish said the centre would be a 'vital resource' for these refugees. 'As our city continues to grow, it's so important that we have the right supports in place,' she said. 'Ours is one of the most diverse cities in Canada and we're proud of that. People come here from all over the world to build new lives.' For families like Saraah Baha's, who fled Afghanistan via Pakistan before arriving in Canada on June 11, the centre has been a lifeline. 'It's the first place we've felt safe. The staff have been so kind so far and supportive,' said Baha. 'We're learning how to live in Canada here, with orientations and seminars.' She said her and her family also appreciate the assistance in finding permanent housing, which she said has been challenging so far. Another challenge has been filling out various immigration and health-related documents, with which PICS staff have helped. 'They just guide us with everything,' said Baha. The facility currently has 75 rooms. Depending on the room, each can hold up to three individuals, meaning the facility can hold up to approximately 200 people. It is a short-term facility, intended for an average stay time of three weeks. It aims to be the refugees' first stop from the airport. They provide health and clinical services, meals and mental health counselling, as well as orientations on culture shock, family needs, Canadian law and banking — among various other wraparound services. It also includes services to assist children in enrolling in local schools, while adults receive assistance navigating employment and language services. Razan Omar, the centre's resettlement program co-ordinator, said her favourite part about working there is simply having the opportunity to help others. 'When clients arrive, they're exhausted mentally and physically and so being able to provide that service — we really do set the foundation for successful resettlement,' she said. She mentioned the work is especially meaningful for her as she was once a new immigrant to Canada, and didn't receive the same level of care. 'So I feel like I'm doing it for everyone else like me who wasn't able to receive these services,' she said. Error! Sorry, there was an error processing your request. Tesla officially launches robotaxis in Austin to a small group of users, charging a $4.20 flat fee per ride

On a balmy Sunday in Austin, Tesla fans awaited the promise of the future. After a few hours of delays, that promise finally came true, and a select group took their first rides, livestreaming their experience. While Tesla robotaxis are meant to be fully autonomous, Tesla employees were still present in the passenger seat of the cars for safety reasons. Earlier this month, Tesla CEO Elon Musk teased the launch of the robotaxi, a driverless Tesla Model Y emblazoned with its namesake in Cybertruck-style font. "Beautifully simple design," Musk wrote on X. "These are unmodified Tesla cars coming straight from the factory, meaning that every Tesla coming out of our factories is capable of unsupervised self-driving," he added. On Sunday, Musk said the first Tesla robotaxi rides would be available for a flat fee of $4.20. A small group of invited users was the first to try them out. Tesla fans buzzed on social media in the lead-up to the official launch, which was initially delayed as users awaited the release of the official Tesla robotaxi app. "We are approaching the window where we expected to have the app and showing everything," Chuck Cook, one of the early invitees to try the Tesla robotaxi, said on X. "There looks like there will be a small delay in the distribution of the app for couple hours." Tesla AI, the division behind the robotaxis, said Sunday on X that Tesla robotaxis will eventually be deployed anywhere they are approved and are designed for "scalability." "It does not require expensive, specialized equipment or extensive mapping of service areas. It just works," the company said. The company launched a website where users can sign up for early access when the service becomes available in their area. It also launched an X feed dedicated to Tesla robotaxis. With the launch of Tesla robotaxis, Austin continued to solidify itself as a new theater for Silicon Valley's race to shape the new age of driverless transportation. In March, Google-backed Waymo launched its autonomous ride-hailing service in partnership with Uber. Waabi, a Canadian startup backed by Uber and Nvidia, is set to launch fully autonomous trucks in Texas this year. Zoox, backed by Amazon, opened its first robotaxi serial production facility in Austin last week. This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

This is the No. 1 thing every marriage must have in order for it to last, expert reveals

A Harvard professor revealed the No. 1 thing every marriage should have for it to last a lifetime. Since superficial things like looks, money and chemistry can fade over time — the one thing that a long-lasting marriage should be built on is friendship, according to Arthur Brooks, a social science expert and professor who devoted his career to studying love, originally reported on by the Daily Mail. 'The goal of your marriage is not passion, it's friendship. This is the goal, you must be close friends, ideally best friends, with your spouse,' Brooks said during his appearance on The Drive podcast. Advertisement Arthur Brooks devoted much of his career to studying love. Arthur Brooks/Facebook 'One of the most important things for a happy life is a partnership with somebody who will be the last person who you set eyes on as you take your last dying breath…' During the conversation, Brooks also rattled off some tell-tale signs that indicated a marriage is headed for divorce — and loneliness is one of them. Advertisement 'One of the greatest predictors of divorce is partners who are lonely while living together and this [means] that the only thing you have in common is your kids,' he explained. Oftentimes, couples spend much of their marriage focusing only on their kids, and when they grow into adults who eventually flee the coop — they're left feeling empty and lost, unsure what their marriage consists of outside of raising their children. Having a strong partnership is key to making a marriage last. LIGHTFIELD STUDIOS – '[When] that one point of commonality disappears and you're sitting across the table blinking at each other during dinner and not talking because you literally have nothing to talk about,' the expert pointed out. Advertisement 'They [couples] should develop philosophical interests in common, they're talking about deep things. There's got to be something bigger than 'Did you change his diaper?' because that's not going to be in common forever and you're going to be lonely in your relationship.' In addition to having things in common with your spouse that don't revolve around your kids — having strong relationships outside of your marriage is also key. 'You've got to work on these things for sure for a lot of reasons besides the fact that it's just healthy and good. You might, at some point, be left alone if you're widowed. You don't want to be alone under those circumstances,' he explained. Advertisement These aren't the only things to maintain a healthy marriage — separate bathrooms, or at least more space in one, could also do the trick. Sharing a bathroom with her husband was causing turmoil in Debbie Wiener's marriage, so she decided to have a 'bathroom divorce.' 'As you get older, your gastrointestinal needs change,' Wiener told The Post. 'My husband's habits didn't age well. One toilet was not cutting it.' This frustrated wife resolved her bathroom sharing woes by creating a bathroom suite, with two of everything. 'All my neighbors lined up to see my bathroom. Every time I tell a woman about my bathroom, she is, like, 'OMG I want that.' This is the next step after a sleep divorce. You can share a vanity without sharing cooties. You can share a wet room but not a toilet,' she said.
