Anwar defends Tengku Zafrul's role in investment and trade portfolio, says will stay on as minister despite Umno exit
KUALA LUMPUR, June 1 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today said Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz will remain with his portfolio despite quitting Umno to join PKR.
He said Tengku Zafrul has performed well in his current role in the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry, particularly in overseeing substantial investments involving various agencies.
'His ministerial duties remain unchanged,' he told reporters when met at Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair 2025 here.
'We want him to continue his work, especially in the investment portfolio. His contributions are still needed by the country.'
Anwar's remark came amid calls from Umno for it to retain seven ministerial posts after Tengku Zafrul announced his is joining PKR.
He also reiterated that PKR has not had any detailed discussion over Tengku Zafrul's application to joint.
The PKR president also urged the public and media to avoid overthinking the move by the minister formerly from Umno.
'Yes, he has applied to join PKR, but we have not deliberated on it thoroughly. For now, let it be.
'There's no need for excessive interpretations that might be unhealthy,' he added.
Anwar said the application would be reviewed with fairness, in consultation with the party's grassroots.
Yesterday, Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said he is confident Anwar would consider reinstating the allocation in line with the party's role in the unity government.
This came after Tengku Zafrul said he has resigned from Umno and is vacating his seat on the Umno Supreme Council as well as his position as its Kota Raja division chief.

GEORGE TOWN : Six High Court judges were honoured at a rare judicial elevation ceremony here today, reviving a long-standing tradition with roots dating back over two centuries. Today's ceremony presided over by senior judge Justice Rozana Ali Yusoff was the first to honour six judges at once. They were: Quay Chew Soon, Anand Ponnudurai, Azizan Arshad, Kenneth Yoong Ken Chinson St James, Fathiyah Idris and Rofiah Mohamad. Penang Bar chair Gowri Subbaiyah said the elevation ceremony usually takes place only when judicial commissioners are confirmed as High Court judges, 'which usually takes two to three years'. However, some among the six judges had been confirmed over the past three years but had not been formally recognised. 'Since they are still serving here, we felt it was only right to include them,' she said. It is understood that the elevation ceremony was last held in 2017, when Justice Lim Chong Fong, now a judge at the Court of Appeal, was elevated to the High Court. After today's ceremony, Justice St James described his confirmation as both humbling and liberating. 'I'm beholden to no one now. Only to God, my oath, the Constitution, and the rule of law,' he said. Justice Quay said his time in Penang had been both challenging and rewarding. 'I've enjoyed the cases, especially the complex ones, as they test the mind. And I've enjoyed the food and the people even more,' he said, adding that Penang was 'the best station a judge could hope for'. Justice Fathiyah paid tribute to the senior lawyers who helped her grow when she was a sessions court judge in Ipoh. Justice Anand, best known for his work in employment law, said the variety of cases in Penang had pushed him to grow. 'I've had to learn Acts of Parliament I never knew existed. And it's been worth it,' he said. 'My guiding rule is simple. I must be honest with myself. If I sign a judgment, it's because I believe it's the right decision.' The elevation ceremony is believed to have its beginnings in 1808 when the colonial settlement received its charter of justice, which led to the founding of the first formal court. Elevation ceremonies used to include a procession where judges would walk in full regalia from St George's Church to the court building. Although public processions are no longer held, the 'ceremonial spirit lives on', according to lawyer T Tharumarajah, who said the ceremony is aimed at introducing new judges to the public. It also serves as a bridge between the bar and the bench. He said: 'Judges and lawyers are meant to engage (with one another), not keep apart. But after the scandals that rocked the judiciary in the early 2000s, that bond weakened. It shouldn't be that way.'

Malaysia's exports down 1.1 pct on year in May
Xinhua 20 Jun 2025, 17:15 GMT+10 KUALA LUMPUR, June 20 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia's exports recorded a slight decrease of 1.1 percent to 126.62 billion ringgit (29.78 billion U.S dollars) in May, official data showed Friday. The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) said in a statement that the exports of manufactured goods, which contributed 86.9 percent to total exports, edged down by 0.3 percent year-on-year to 110.01 billion ringgit, due to lower exports of petroleum products, chemicals and chemical products as well as iron and steel products. Malaysia's trade, however, increased by 2.6 percent year-on-year to 252.48 billion ringgit in May. Its imports grew by 6.6 percent to 125.86 billion ringgit, while the country's trade surplus amounted to 766.3 million ringgit. For the period of January to May, Malaysia's trade rose 6.2 percent year-on-year to 1.23 trillion ringgit compared to the corresponding period in 2024. During the period, its exports expanded 5.5 percent to 638.48 billion ringgit and imports up by 6.9 percent to 591.54 billion ringgit. Trade surplus for the period stood at 46.94 billion ringgit, a slip of 9.4 percent. (1 ringgit equals 0.24 U.S. dollars)
