Race for advanced 2nm semiconductor chips heats up in H2 2025 as TSMC, Samsung, Intel gear up for production
New Delhi [India], June 16 (ANI): The global race to lead in next-generation 2-nanometer (nm) semiconductors is expected to intensify in the second half of 2025, with top foundries TSMC and Samsung Electronics preparing to begin mass production.
At the same time, Intel is also looking to outpace its rivals with the launch of its more advanced 1.8nm process technology.
According to a report by The Korea Herald, Taiwan's TSMC has already started receiving client orders for its 2nm process node. The chips are expected to be produced at its Baoshan and Kaohsiung factories in Taiwan in the latter half of the year.
This marks a major milestone for TSMC, as it is adopting gate-all-around (GAA) transistor architecture for the first time in its 2nm chips.
The new node promises 10-15 per cent better performance, 25-30 per cent lower power consumption, and a 15 per cent boost in transistor density compared to the current 3nm technology.
Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics, the second-largest foundry player, is also targeting mass production of 2nm chips in the second half of 2025.
The company confirmed in its latest earnings report that it will begin producing mobile chips using its 2nm node this year. Although it didn't mention the specific product, it is widely believed to be the Exynos 2600 chip, expected to power the upcoming Galaxy S26 series in early 2026.
Samsung was the first to adopt GAA technology with its 3nm chips, but initially struggled with low yield rates. The company now aims to improve its 2nm production efficiency using its earlier experience.
As per The Korea Herald, TSMC currently dominates the global foundry market, holding a 67.6 per cent share in Q1 2025. It added that TSMC's 2nm yield rate has surpassed 60 per cent, a key level for stable mass production.
In comparison, Samsung's yield rate reportedly stands at around 40 per cent, with a market share of 7.7 per cent.
Despite the tough competition, the 2nm market outlook remains strong.
TSMC Chairman C.C. Wei said that demand for 2nm chips has already surpassed that of the 3nm generation, driven by demand from smartphones and high-performance computing.
He also noted that the number of 2nm chip designs, or 'tape-outs,' in the first two years is expected to exceed those of previous nodes like 3nm, 4nm, and 5nm.
Counterpoint Research has predicted that TSMC will reach full utilization of its 2nm production capacity by the fourth quarter of 2025, faster than for any previous node. Key clients are expected to include Apple, Qualcomm, MediaTek, AMD, and even Intel.
To stay competitive, Samsung is making strategic moves to strengthen its foundry business. The company recently hired Margaret Han, a former TSMC executive, to lead its US foundry operations.
Meanwhile, US chipmaker Intel is placing its bets on the 1.8nm process, known as 18A, to turn around its foundry business.
Kevin O'Buckley, general manager of Intel Foundry Services, admitted that the company had missed some of its earlier deadlines but confirmed that 18A is now on track for high-volume manufacturing in the second half of 2025.
He stated, 'I'll be very direct to admit we did not deliver all of our schedules for 18A.'
Intel hopes to challenge both TSMC and Samsung in the advanced node race with this new process. (ANI)

US may target Samsung, Hynix, TSMC operations in China
By Karen Freifeld and Alexandra Alper The U.S. Department of Commerce is considering revoking authorizations granted in recent years to global chipmakers Samsung , SK Hynix and TSMC , making it more difficult for them to receive U.S. goods and technology at their plants in China, according to people familiar with the matter. The chances of the United States withdrawing the authorizations are unclear. But with such a move, it would be harder for foreign chipmakers to operate in China, where they produce semiconductors used in a wide range of industries. A White House official said the United States was "just laying the groundwork" in case the truce reached between the two countries fell apart. But the official expressed confidence that the trade agreement would go forward and that rare earths would flow from China, as agreed. "There is currently no intention of deploying this tactic," the official said. "It's another tool we want in our toolbox in case either this agreement falls through or any other catalyst throws a wrench in bilateral relations." Shares of U.S. chip equipment makers that supply plants in China fell when the Wall Street Journal first reported the news earlier on Friday. KLA Corp dropped 2.4%, Lam Research fell 1.9% and Applied Materials sank 2%. Shares of Micron , a major competitor to Samsung and SK Hynix in the memory chip sector, rose 1.5%. A TSMC spokesman declined comment. Samsung and Hynix did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Lam Research, KLA and Applied Materials did not immediately respond, either. In October 2022, after the United States placed sweeping restrictions on U.S. chipmaking equipment to China, it gave foreign manufacturers like Samsung and Hynix letters authorizing them to receive goods. In 2023 and 2024, the companies received what is known as Validated End User status in order to continue the trade. A company with VEU status is able to receive designated goods from a U.S. company without the supplier obtaining multiple export licenses to ship to them. VEU status enables entities to receive U.S.-controlled products and technologies "more easily, quickly and reliably," as the Commerce Department website puts it. The VEU authorizations come with conditions, a person familiar with the matter said, including prohibitions on certain equipment and reporting requirements. "Chipmakers will still be able to operate in China," a Commerce Department spokesperson said in a statement when asked about the possible revocations. "The new enforcement mechanisms on chips mirror licensing requirements that apply to other semiconductor companies that export to China and ensure the United States has an equal and reciprocal process." Industry sources said that if it became more difficult for U.S. semiconductor equipment companies to ship to foreign multinationals, it would only help domestic Chinese competitors. "It's a gift," one said.

What is $1 trillion Project Crystal Land, SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son's grand vision for AI and robotics hub in US?
Founder of SoftBank Group, Masayoshi Son, has proposed plans to set up a massive AI and robotics manufacturing industrial zone in Arizona. The endeavour could likely cost a whopping $1 trillion if it reaches its full scale. Reportedly, the project was earlier known as Project Crystal Land and aims at building infrastructure for AI systems and robotics. According to reports, Son has discussed the project with Samsung, chipmaker TSMC, and the Trump administration. Dubbed the Arizona AI megaproject, it aims to set up a Shenzhen-like manufacturing hub for robotics and AI. This aligns with US President Donald Trump's vision of bringing high-tech production back to America. Project Crystal Land envisions a futuristic industrial park specially designed to build AI-powered industrial robots and accelerate AI technologies. The project aims to rival China's Shenzhen, which is widely known as a hub for innovation and manufacturing excellence. As of now the AI arms race is intense, with the US and China in the fray, and this project could likely catapult the Grand Canyon State into the global arena as a centre for high-tech production. The project is in line with the multinational investment holding company's aggressive strategy for investing in AI. This comes after the company pledged a $19 billion investment to the ambitious $500 billion Stargate AI infrastructure project flagged off by Trump along with Son, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and Larry Ellison of Oracle earlier this year. As part of its strategy, SoftBank Group recently pushed $40 billion into OpenAI and acquired Ampere Computing for $6.5 billion. Project Crystal Land, if materialised, would include research and development labs and production facilities focused on Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), processing of advanced semiconductors, tech workforce housing, and a likely integration with smart grid infrastructure. Reportedly, SoftBank is eyeing involving TSMC in its grand initiative. TSMC has been instrumental in fabricating processors for NVIDIA. The Taiwanese company currently plans to invest about $165 billion in total in its US projects; however, reports indicate that this is unrelated to SoftBank's proposed project. Similarly, Samsung Electronics has also been approached for the project. Reportedly, discussions between SoftBank and federal and state government officials are underway to gain support for Project Crystal Land. Son has reportedly met US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and other officials to mull over likely tax incentives and regulatory nods that may support the development of thesemassive complex. The discussions follow Trump's vision to revive American manufacturing capabilities and bring jobs back to the US. However, the success of this project would largely depend on a favourable regulatory environment and gaining support from the US government. Following the reports of the proposed collaboration, SoftBank' shares soared as much as 2 per cent, and TSMC's stock witnessed a hike of 1.9 per cent. When it comes to financing this mega trillion-dollar project, SoftBank will likely follow a model that is similar to oil pipeline funding, essentially reducing its upfront capital needs while at the same time using the company's present $23 billion liquidity and its stake in Arms Holdings as collateral. Reportedly, its project-based approach will enable SoftBank to gain additional funding without stressing its immediate financial resources.
