Crop planning should align with mkt demand: CM
Vijayawada: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Thursday directed the officials of the Agriculture department to go for crop-specific planning aligned with national and global market trends.
Naidu emphasised the need to inform farmers in advance about suitable crops based on market dynamics to ensure a balance between supply and demand and prevent losses. "Farmers must cultivate only high-demand crops to avoid losses," said Naidu. He instructed the officials to adopt scientific planning and monitor global agricultural developments regularly. During an official review on key crops such as tobacco, cocoa, mango, and paddy, he discussed immediate and long-term farmers' issues. He stated that both short-term and long-term challenges in agriculture must be addressed through the Cabinet Sub-Committee.
The CM instructed officials that cocoa stocks with farmers should be purchased at Rs 500 per kg, and if the companies fail to do that, he said the government should step in for direct procurement. He also ordered accurate registration of HD Burley tobacco stocks through an app and approved a crop holiday for that variety due to lack of market demand. He is pursuing the inclusion of HD and White Burley varieties under the Tobacco Board and will discuss farmer concerns with union ministers.
The Chief Minister also reviewed challenges faced by tomato farmers and instructed officials to encourage more tomato processing units in the state to ensure fair prices. On paddy, officials informed him that procurement is progressing smoothly, with even rain-damaged stock being purchased. To boost mango pulp consumption, he suggested a Goods and Service Tax (GST) reduction on pure juices and proposed its use in mid-day meals and Tirumala-Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) temple offerings to increase demand.
This initiative is aimed at boosting mango juice consumption and alleviating the financial strain on mango farmers, who are currently grappling with declining prices. It has been observed that a lack of orders has led to a slowdown in mango procurement, causing considerable distress among mango growers. Naidu directed officials to ensure that pulp processing companies immediately resume procurement. However, officials highlighted that existing stockpiles and a shortage of bank loans for pulp companies are limiting their capacity to purchase fresh stock. To address this, the CM instructed officials to facilitate bank loans for these processing units. Ministers Ayyanna Patrudu, Nadendla Manohar, Gottipati Ravikumar, Nimmala Ramanaidu, and Payyavula Keshav participated in the review meeting.

Advance tax collection growth slows to 3.9%, income tax mop-up lower than FY25 level
Advance direct tax collections from the first installment in the current financial year 2025-26 grew by 3.87 per cent to Rs 1.56 lakh crore as on June 19 this year, slower than the growth of 27.34 per cent seen in the same period a year ago, data released Saturday by the Income Tax Department showed. While advance tax collections during April 1-June 19 for corporate tax grew 5.86 per cent to Rs 1.22 lakh crore, personal income tax or non-corporate tax collections recorded a slowdown, with advance collections falling by 2.68 per cent to Rs 33,928.32 crore. The advance tax collections for personal income at Rs 33,928.32 crore are lower than the first installment collections of Rs 34,863.78 crore seen in the previous financial year 2024-25 (as on June 19, 2024). The slower growth in advance tax collections for personal income tax seems to be more pronounced, a possible indication of the impact of the income tax cuts undertaken in the Budget as well as slowing income growth. Non-corporate tax includes taxes paid by individuals, Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs), firms, Association of Persons (AoPs), Body of Individuals (Bols), local authorities, artificial juridical persons. Every person, whose estimated tax liability for the financial year is Rs 10,000 or more, is required to pay his or her taxes in advance in the form of 'advance tax'. The advance tax has to be paid in four installments during the year. The first installment has to be paid on or before June 15 with payment of not less than 15 per cent of the advance tax. The second installment has to be paid on or before September 15 with 45 per cent advance tax as reduced by the amount paid in the earlier installment. The third installment requires 75 per cent to be paid on or before December 15, followed by 100 per cent payment on or before March 15. Overall, growth in net direct tax collections so far until June 19 also slipped into negative territory, declining 1.39 per cent to Rs 4.59 lakh crore from Rs 4.65 lakh crore in the corresponding period of the previous financial year. The net collections were lower as refunds increased by 58 per cent to Rs 86,385 crore until June 19 this year. Gross direct tax collections, however, rose 4.86 per cent to Rs 5.45 lakh crore this fiscal. Net corporate tax collections slowed to Rs 1.73 lakh crore, down 5.13 per cent from the year-ago period. Personal income tax or non-corporate tax collections increased marginally by 0.7 per cent to Rs 2.73 lakh crore. Securities Transaction Tax (STT) increased by 12 per cent to Rs 13,013 crore during the period. Cost of Shambhu border protest: Farm group Kisan Mazdoor Morcha got 20.6L for 13-month stir, left with Rs 1,734
Bathinda: Farmer forum Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) on Saturday released details of the donations it received and the expenses it made during the 13-month-long protest helmed by the farmers' body at the Shambhu border between Punjab and Haryana from Feb 13, 2024, to Mar 19 this year. The protest, along with another stir helmed by Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) at Khanauri border between the two states, was carried out to demand a legal right for farmers on the minimum support price (MSP) for their crops, calculated for a 50% profit over comprehensive cost. KMM claimed that it received Rs 20,58,254 over the 13 months and spent Rs 20,56,520, leaving it with cash at hand of Rs 1,734. KMM also released a month-wise account of the funds for the period from Feb 2024 to Mar 2025. According to details, KMM received the highest amount in donations in May 2024, getting Rs 6,53,650. The lowest collection was made in Jan 2025, with the group getting just Rs 39,095 for the entire month. The highest expenditure was incurred in April and May 2024, when over Rs 5 lakh each were spent. Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) is yet to release the details of its accounts. The group headed by Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who went on a hunger strike for MSP, said it will make public its accounts on June 25. KMM accounts committee member Guramneet Singh Mangat said they audited their accounts in April, but a couple of receipt books went missing when police forcibly demolished the morcha site on March 19. "We had to find those receipts and then audit the accounts. This is why the process was delayed," he said. SKM (Non-Political) functionary Abhimanyu Kohar said both forums met on June 19, where accounts from both sides were shared. "We are busy with some engagements and the accounts will be put in the public domain on June 25," he said. The collection of funds was mired in controversy even during the previous 2020-21 farmers' protest on the borders of Delhi, as certain leaders alleged misappropriation of funds.
