Cops berated over patrol car breakdown in viral dashcam clip

JOHOR BARU: A man was caught on dashcam berating two police officers after their patrol car broke down along a dark stretch of the road at Jalan Austin Heights 7/4 on June 15.
Johor Baru (South) police chief Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat said the 12-second clip, uploaded on Facebook, showed the man questioning the presence of uniformed police officers stationed in front of a sports complex.
The man, who pulled up next to the stalled patrol car, lashed out at the officers for not turning on the hazard lights, claiming it was dangerous and could cause an accident.
He was heard saying, "How can you stop here? You don't even have your brake lights on... I was shocked."
Raub said the 4am incident occurred when two officers from the Taman Setia Indah police station were on a routine crime prevention patrol when their Proton Waja mobile patrol vehicle (MPV) suffered a wiring malfunction.
"The technical failure caused all external and signal lights, including the beacon, to shut down, rendering the vehicle immobile.
"While awaiting maintenance support, a man driving a private vehicle stopped, approached the officers, and began questioning their presence and recording the exchange.
Despite the officers explaining the situation, he continued to provoke them before driving off," Raub said in a statement today.
"No police reports were lodged, but we have taken steps to prevent similar misunderstandings in future," he said.
Raub urged the public not to speculate or spread false information about the incident.

Johor Baru South police chief Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat said the first case involved a 60-year-old retired teacher who lost RM243,975 in an investment scam advertised on social media. Lured by a promised 560 per cent return within three months, the victim joined a WhatsApp group and was instructed to download an application purportedly linked to the investment. Between April 28 and June 19, the victim made seven online and over-the-counter bank transfers totalling RM255,100 into two bank accounts. She received RM11,125 in returns, resulting in a net loss of nearly a quarter million ringgit. "Checks revealed 17 prior fraud reports linked to the bank accounts used," Raub said in a statement today. In the second case, a senior citizen lost RM108,959 after he received a phone call from a man claiming to be a bank officer. The caller claimed the victim's credit card had been misused on an e-commerce online platform and convinced him to perform several "verification" transactions, which included transferring RM8,989 from his wife's credit card to the suspect's TNG eWallet. He was also instructed to transfer RM99,970 via DuitNow from his bank account. Raub said the suspect became unreachable once the transactions were completed. Checks showed the phone number had been linked to two similar fraud cases. He urged the public to be wary of investment offers on digital platforms and not to trust promises of unrealistic returns. He also advised verifying suspicious calls through official bank channels and reporting scams immediately to the National Scam Response Centre at 997, which can help block suspect accounts and stop fund transfers.

RM1.48mil in drugs, assets seized in Johor apartment raid

JOHOR BARU: Police have dismantled a drug trafficking syndicate that rented two units in the same gated apartment complex, using one as a processing and repackaging centre. The group, led by a 31-year-old man who had only been active for two months, was crippled following four raids in the district last week. Johor Baru South police chief Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat said the raids were carried out on June 12 and 13 following a week of surveillance, resulting in the seizure of various drugs worth over RM1.28 million. Besides the mastermind, three other men, a Singaporean man, and a Thai woman aged between 30 and 39 were also arrested. The syndicate operated out of a guarded apartment where drugs were repackaged and stored before being distributed locally. The locations raided included two homestays and an apartment, which the group rented for short stays at around RM300 per day before relocating. They rented two units in the apartment block, one of which was used as a storage facility, while the other served as their residence. Seized drugs included 7.669kg of ecstasy powder, 13.6g of ketamine, and 8g of Eramin 5 pills. Police also confiscated RM3,000 in cash, two cars, and jewellery, bringing the total value of seized items to over RM1.48 million. The syndicate repackaged the drugs into sachets resembling three-in-one beverage packets, which were sold for between RM200 and RM300 each. Urine tests showed all suspects tested positive for methamphetamine. They are being remanded for 12 days until June 24 to assist investigations under Section 39B and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Johor cops nab six, bust drug syndicate using drink packets as cover

JOHOR BARU: Police have busted a drug syndicate with the arrest of six suspects, including two foreigners, and the seizure of various drugs worth RM1.28mil. Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Raub Selamat said the suspects, four local men, a Singaporean man and a Thai woman, were arrested in a series of raids between June 12 and 13. 'They repackaged the drugs into three-in-one juice or coffee sachets, which were then sold locally for RM150 to RM300 per packet, mostly to acquaintances. 'The syndicate is believed to have been active since April this year and had been renting apartments to carry out their operations. 'They would stay at one place for a short period before moving to another location to avoid detection,' he told a press conference at the Johor Baru South police headquarters. ACP Raub said a 31-year-old local man, believed to be the mastermind, was among those arrested. 'Among the drugs seized were 7.67kg of ecstasy powder, 13.60g of ketamine and 8g of Erimin 5 pills. 'The drugs, worth about RM1.28mil, could have fed the addiction of over 2,000 users,' he said. He added that two vehicles, RM3,000 in cash and jewellery worth RM8,365 were also seized, bringing the total value of items seized to more than RM1.48mil. 'Urine tests showed all suspects were positive for methamphetamine, while two of the local men had prior drug and criminal records,' he said, adding that the suspects, all believed to be friends, were aged between 30 and 39 years old. All suspects have been remanded for 12 days from June 13 to 24 to facilitate investigations under Section 39B and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
