Wi-Fi warning for all homes using BT, Sky or Virgin Media - here's what to do now

Daily Record14-05-2025

A new warning has been issued to all UK households that are using Wi-Fi, with homes being urged to check their routers
UK households are being encouraged to give their routers a once-over and consider requesting an upgrade from their Internet Service Provider (ISP). Broadband Savvy has issued new guidance, highlighting the leaps in Wi-Fi technology and the pitfalls of clinging to outdated equipment.
The experts at Broadband Savvy have pointed out that many UK homes are still using Wi-Fi 5 routers, despite most ISPs like Sky, BT, and Virgin Media continuing to supply this older tech to their customers.

Wi-Fi 5, which is now more than a decade old, has been eclipsed by newer iterations such as Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 6E, and even Wi-Fi 7.

While Wi-Fi 5 can still provide a satisfactory connection, it falls short of the performance offered by the latest routers in terms of speed and dependability.
Moreover, Wi-Fi 5 isn't ideal for households with numerous internet-connected gadgets, and those with a high-traffic home network will certainly notice an improvement upon upgrading to Wi-Fi 6, 6E, or 7, reports the Express.
"Compared to more modern standards, like WiFi 6, 6E, and 7, WiFi 5 has significant limitations for the end-user," Tom Paton, founder of Broadband Savvy, remarked.
"WiFi 5 is fine for slower broadband connections, such as the 30-50 Mbps packages that were popular in 2010-2015, as long as you don't have lots of internet-connected devices.
"But certain providers are still shipping these routers to customers buying an ultrafast broadband plan, even though they're not designed for this."

Consumers are urged to quiz their ISPs over routers as lengthy contracts could see them saddled with outdated tech.
"Most broadband plans on the market at the moment come with a 24 month contract. In two years' time, WiFi 5 will be essentially obsolete, which is why we're urging broadband providers to at least offer the option of a better router on their fast fibre plans," Paton remarked.

Determining the capabilities of your router can be challenging, but it's certainly prudent to check for potential upgrades with your ISP.
It's pertinent to point out that a plethora of Wi-Fi boosters like Amazon's Eero can enhance your internet connectivity, leveraging technologies such as Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E.
"When buying, insist on at least a WiFi 6 router - but be aware that one or two major providers still don't offer this as an option," noted Paton.
"For example, as a cheaper, more basic provider, Plusnet is still shipping the Smart Hub 2 WiFi 5 router, even on their ultrafast 500 Mbps and 900 Mbps plans. On the other hand, EE offers the choice of a WiFi 6 or WiFi 7 router across all of their tariffs."
In order to stay ahead in terms of internet speeds, consulting with your ISP is advisable.

Review: IMOU Doorbell 2S Kit boasts smart tracking and a chime

Review: IMOU Doorbell 2S Kit boasts smart tracking and a chime I found the images to be very decent, but what really impressed me was the infrared night vision mode Video doorbells are all the rage these days and now home security specialist IMOU has again entered the fray with the launch of its Doorbell 2S Kit. It includes everything you'd expect but with a couple of features that make it stick out from the crowd. The kit comes with two devices. First off is a video doorbell with a rotating lens that allows for a 180° field of view. It can cover the entire front of a house while tracking movements closely. The 4:3 aspect ratio is suitable for the corridor in front of the door, capturing head-to-toe images of people and objects. I found the images to be very decent, but what really impressed me was the infrared night vision mode. This worked brilliantly and was as good as - if not even better - than some of its more expensive rivals. The doorbell will only show and notify up about important and necessary clips thanks to some clever tech – reducing unwanted notifications and false alarms. It boasts a 0.3 seconds detection time to catch any movements when the doorbell detects someone approaching the door means that users will be informed quickly of any activity. The doorbell also has a loitering detection feature that notifies when people are staying in front of the door after a preset duration. The second part of the kit is an indoor chime. Yes, you get a chime included. So many times this is, rather frustratingly, an added extra that you have to fork out for. The IMOU chime connects to the doorbell via 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, and also acts as a Wi-Fi extender as well as offering indoor storage of the SD card, which helps to protect the recording. There are ten different chime ringtones to choose from for event alarms and snooze schedules. The camera offers the usual two-way talk call functionality you'd expect, but there are a few extra goodies I wasn't expecting. You can record a voice that can be used to scare away an intruder or welcome people with a personalised touch. You can connect the doorbell to the IMOU app, which allows you to control the device and meddle with the settings. Local storage is free, but a very reasonable subscription of £3.49 a month will give you an automatic cloud back-up. There is no solar panel but the 5,000mAh rechargeable battery can be recharged by USB-C and, when fully charged, lasts up to 120 days under normal conditions. The doorbell can be used standalone with the rechargeable battery or it can be hardwired for continuous power using the hardwired kit that is included in the box as standard. For the price, you can't really go wrong. You get a lot for the money, and the inclusjon of the chime gives it an edge in my opinion. The IMOU Doorbell 2S Kit is available to buy from Amazon for £64.99. What users say "Works great so far. Robust device, charges quickly, battery lasts a good while. Chime is loud. Pan tilt is good, but field of vision is already excellent." "In summary, a great doorbell, but not always easy to hear in all parts of the house, can't purchase an additional chime, and can't work with Google or Alexa. These are big drawbacks to an otherwise outstanding camera." Alternatives Article continues below AOSU Doorbell Camera Wireless, 2K HD Video Reolink 2K+ Doorbell Camera with Chime Kit

Broadband provider with 300,000 customers makes huge u-turn on bills and customers will pay more

A MAJOR broadband provider has made a u-turn on bills meaning customers will pay more. Hyperoptic has ditched its no mid-contract price rise pledge meaning households will have to cough up more during their contract terms. 1 The firm has spent the last few years campaigning to stop the practice which sees prices rise to keep up with inflation. In early 2023, it launched a TV ad campaign calling out the pricing tactic. However, it will now implement annual increases of £3 from April 2026 for customers joining after June 3 this year. Lutfu Kitapci, chief technology officer and managing director of ISP at Hyperoptic, said: "For years, broadband consumers have had to deal with unknown price increases in the middle of their contract and we are proud to have campaigned and supported the ban of this unfair practice. "Price changes however are not uncommon, for example after introductory pricing, discounted months and other offers." He added existing customers will not be affected by the annual increase, unless they switch to a new contract. Customers on a Fair Fibre plan, a cheaper package for those on benefits like Universal Credit and PIP, will also not see their prices rise mid-contract. The changes mean that someone on a 24-month 150MB Superfast package living in North-East London will see their price rise from £19 a month to £22 a month next April. From April 2027, this will rise a further £3 to £25 a month. Meanwhile, a household in the same area choosing a 24-month 1GB Hyperfast deal will see the price rise from £25 a month now to £28 next April, then £31 from April 2027. You can find out how much your package might rise by visiting BROADBAND PRICE RISES A host of broadband firms hiked prices for customers in March and April. This included BT and EE Mobile and broadband customers, those with Three and Tesco Mobile customers. For some customers, their contract prices rose by various measures of inflation plus a certain percentage. However, other customers saw prices rise based on a new pounds and pence method introduced by regulator Ofcom. For example, O2 customers who signed up for deals before January 9 this year saw their contracts hiked by January's RPI rate of inflation plus 3.9% on April 1. But, those who agreed to a new SIM-only deal from January 9 onwards saw their contracts rise by £1.80. Vodafone mobile phone customers who took out a new deal before July 2, 2024 saw their monthly costs go up based on the January CPI measure of inflation plus 3.9% on April 1. However, anyone who took out a deal after this date will have seen their bill rise by a flat £3. How to cut mobile and broadband costs Check whether you can save potentially hundreds of pounds a year on your broadband by switching to a different provider. Which? research found, on average, out-of-contract TV and broadband customers could save £160 by switching. Meanwhile, TV and broadband customers who haggled with their current provider rather than switching saved £117 on average. It's worth checking if you qualify for a social tariff as well, available to those on certain benefits like Universal Credit. They're usually cheaper than standard broadband packages and could save you up to £456 a year. Social tariffs are not just offered by broadband providers either - you can get them for mobile phones too. You can find out the list of providers that offer either type of tariff on the Ofcom website. If you're looking for a TV, broadband and phone deal, it can often work out cheaper buying a bundle package combining them all too. .
