Dean Wells, former NFL linebacker and Kentucky standout, dead at 54 following cancer battle
Dean Wells, who played for nearly a decade in the NFL following a standout career at the University of Kentucky, died Thursday following a two-year battle with cancer. He was 54.
Wells spent the first six years of his NFL career with the Seattle Seahawks after he was selected in the fourth round of the 1993 draft. He signed with the Carolina Panthers in 1999, where he played for another three seasons before officially retiring in 2001.
The Panthers announced Wells' passing on the team website Friday.
Wells first opened up about his cancer diagnosis in an interview with On3.com in April 2024. He said he had been diagnosed the previous year with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL).
"There's mental toughness that comes into it. You have to have a positive attitude that you can beat it. I've done everything that I can with that. It's like the chemo either works or it doesn't. You just don't have a lot of control over it. You wish you had more control," he said at the time.
According to the Mayo Clinic, Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia is a cancer of the blood and bone marrow in which "the disease progresses rapidly and creates immature blood cells, rather than mature ones."
Wells finished his pro career with 529 tackles, 2.5 sacks, six forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries, and three interceptions. It followed a standout career at Kentucky where Wells still holds the records for most sacks in a game (5) and the single-season sack record (10).
"Condolences to family & friends of Dean Wells, who has passed away," the university said in a statement on social media.
"A 3-year starter, he set a UK single-game record with 5 sacks vs. Indiana and went on to a 9-year NFL career. After NFL retirement, he returned to hometown Louisville and was a staunch supporter of the Wildcats."
Wells is survived by his wife, Lisa, and their two sons.

Belichick also addressed why Hudson was present at the interview to begin with. He believed the interview would be focused on his book, "The Art of Winning: Lessons from a Life in Football." "Jordon was present at the CBS interview because David Kass, the Simon & Schuster publicist, was not there," Belichick wrote, referring to the publisher of his book. "I included Jordon in the book acknowledgments because she was a creative contributor to the book, including having the idea for formatting the 4 special pages in the book." In another email, Belichick addressed reports that he requested to have Hudson copied on every email sent to him. "Jordon and I have both a personal & professional relationship," Belchick wrote in the email. "This is not a secret. Jordon assists me with my personal media, which is why I asked UNC to forward media requests (E.G. CBS 60 Minutes) to her. Jordon has zero involvement in the UNC football program, beyond the degree that my personal media intersects with it." Belichick released a statement saying he was "surprised" about getting the questions about his relationship and that when Hudson had stepped in, she was doing her job. He went on to accuse CBS of creating a "false narrative" with so-called "selectively edited clips." CBS responded, disagreeing with Belichick's version of events. The NFL is done with all offseason work and it is the time of year where we get lists and rankings of all sorts. CBS Sports' Cody Benjamin ranked and tiered all 32 projected starting quarterbacks for 2025. The tiers? Arizona Cardinals fans will have interest in seeing where the quarterbacks in the NFC West fall? While we did focus on Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray already, let's see about all four starters in the division. NFC West quarterback tiers The four starters in the division fall into two categories: Borderline stars Matthew Stafford of the Los Angeles Rams and Brock Purdy of the San Francisco 49ers fall here, and they are fairly tiered. Stafford has been elite talent for much of his career, but now he is a little less consistent and needs his playmakers to do more, while Purdy, after MVP-type production, saw his play level out after he missed top offensive players. Volatile veterans Murray probably should be up in the borderline star tier, but he hasn't looked like that since 2021. He isn't necessarily volatile because, at his worst, he plays at a league-average level. Seattle's Sam Darnold is the face of volatile veteran.
