
Tata Motors Assures Stability Amid Global Disruptions

Tata Motors chairman N Chandrasekaran used the company's 80th annual general meeting (AGM) on Friday to highlight the mounting challenges facing the global auto industry, while reaffirming the company's preparedness in key areas like electric vehicles and supply chain resilience.
The meeting, held virtually, began with a solemn minute's silence to honour victims of the Air India flight AI-171 crash, marking Chandrasekaran's first appearance at a Tata Group AGM since the June 12 tragedy. He had skipped earlier AGMs of Tata Consultancy Services and Tata Consumer Products this week.
In his address to shareholders, Chandrasekaran painted a candid picture of a volatile global landscape: "Going forward, volatility will continue to mark economic cycles from widespread geopolitical conflicts, military escalations, the redrawing of supply chains and tariff regimes to artificial intelligence and energy transition. Nowhere are all these disruptions visible more than in the automotive sector."
A major concern raised was the global shortage of rare earth materials essential for manufacturing permanent magnets used in electric motors. These magnets play a crucial role in electric vehicles (EVs), hybrids, and even some internal combustion engine models. The scarcity has triggered alarm across the industry, with manufacturers warning of production halts if supply is not restored swiftly.
However, Tata Motors is not yet facing a disruption. "As of now, we are okay. We are not facing issues. We are able to source the magnets that we need, and we have plans for having the right level of inventory," Chandrasekaran assured, adding that the company is working closely with the government and exploring alternative sourcing strategies. "This is not a concern but this is something that we are watching very carefully," he noted.
Despite global headwinds, Tata Motors posted a consolidated group revenue of INR 4.39 lakh crore in FY25, a modest rise of 1.3 per cent. Profit after tax, however, fell 12 per cent to INR 28,149 crore. Wholesale volumes dipped 3 per cent to 1.34 million units. Nevertheless, the company reported record EBITDA and pre-tax earnings (before exceptional items), with Tata Motors now debt-free.
The US market posed a fresh challenge for Tata-owned Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), which had to suspend deliveries following steep tariff hikes imposed by the Trump-led administration. "From 2.5 per cent, the tariff would have gone to 27.5 per cent," Chandrasekaran said, but clarified that with a new trade agreement between the UK and US, the rate would settle at 10 per cent. The gross impact could have been £1.6 billion, but JLR's mitigation steps are expected to limit the damage to £600 million.
Amid these developments, Tata Motors continues its demerger process. The plan is to list its commercial vehicles (CV) and passenger vehicles (PV) businesses as two independent entities, with the latter including JLR and the company's growing EV portfolio. "We should be able to have two independent listed companies — one with CVs and the other with passenger vehicles and JLR — hopefully before the end of this year," he said.
On the PV front, Tata is pushing to reverse its decline in the small commercial vehicle segment while doubling down on EVs. "Our market share is above 50 per cent in the electric PV segment," said Chandrasekaran. EVs now make up 15 per cent of Tata Motors' PV sales, with a 30 per cent target by 2030, "but I think we will achieve the target earlier than that," he added.
Despite the headwinds, Chandrasekaran expressed cautious optimism. "Given the enormous amount of work we have done over the past years... our businesses are structured to not just handle this environment but to thrive," he concluded.

Honda Now Makes VTOL Rockets and Early Tests Are Encouraging
If we needed any further indication that the 21st-century space race is heating up, Japanese car maker Honda has thrown its hat in the ring with a successful test of a reusable first-stage rocket. Said to have been under development for at least six years, the rocket flew to a height of 900 feet before returning carefully and safely to the launch pad, completely intact. Although the space shuttle pioneered the idea of reusable launch vehicles in the 1970s, it was only in the 2000s and 2010s that the idea really took off. The SpaceX Falcon 9 became the first commercial launch vehicle to nail the reusable first-stage concept, but others have followed in its wake, and many more are expected from US and Chinese aerospace firms in the 2020s. Honda just demonstrated the first potential Japanese launch vehicle that could do much the same. In this test, Honda launched a small rocket, measuring just 21 feet tall and 2.8 feet in diameter, weighing just under 2,900 pounds when fully fuelled up. The rocket took off from its launch pedestal, retracting its landing legs in the process. It then flew carefully to its intended height of around 900 feet before extending fins similar to those of the Falcon 9 and performing a controlled descent. It touched back down within just a few inches of its intended target, according to Honda. The flight lasted just under a minute. Honda said that this test represented the successful deployment of "key technologies essential for rocket reusability, such as flight stability during ascent and descent, as well as landing capability." Honda has discussed its rocket efforts before. As Ars Technica points out, in 2021 it said it had been working on a small launch vehicle for the previous two years and hoped to develope a reusable rocket design that could take a metric ton of payload into orbit. Honda hasn't suggested whether this rocket is the prototype for that design or just a way to test key technologies. It has previously said it would work on rocketry until 2025/2026 and then make a decision on whether to continue, so this test may have been an important indicator of Honda's future plans. "In this market environment, Honda has chosen to take on the technological challenge of developing reusable rockets by utilizing Honda technologies amassed in the development of various products and automated driving systems, based on a belief that reusable rockets will contribute to achieving sustainable transportation," Honda said in a statement.

Nvidia partners Navitas Semiconductor and Vertiv (NYSE: VRT) and the next generation of data centers, namely 800-volt (V) high voltage direct current (HVDC), which I've discussed in more detail elsewhere, so investors with the time and inclination can peruse. Nvidia believes they will be more efficient, with lower maintenance costs and significantly lower costs of ownership. The new data centers, scheduled for 2027, employ a different power conversion method, and Navitas is developing Gallium Nitride (GaN) and Silicon Carbide (SiC) power semiconductors to enable more efficient power conversion in 800V HVDC data centers. Similarly, another Nvidia partner, and leading data center equipment provider, Vertiv, is developing critical power and cooling equipment and systems for the new data centers and expects to have them available in the second half of 2026, in time for the launch of the 800V HVDC data center in 2027. What makes both companies particularly interesting is that, unlike their rivals, they are more like pure plays in their end markets. For example, Navitas specializes in GaN and SiC chips for power conversion (not silicon), and 80% of Vertiv's revenue comes from data centers. Speaking of SiC and GaN chips, Aehr's (NASDAQ: AEHR) stock has soared recently on speculation that Navitas might be a customer for Aehr's testing and burn-in equipment. Aehr's equipment helps semiconductor manufacturers ensure quality and reliability throughout the manufacturing process. Aehr has struggled recently as its revenue at SiC customers, including ON Semiconductor, has declined in light of pullbacks in EV investment. Still, Aehr is making good progress in opening up and winning customers in new markets, including GaN semiconductors and semiconductors for artificial intelligence (AI) processing. Synopsys is a leader in electronic design automation software (used to design and verify chips), and its intended acquisition of engineering simulation and analysis company Ansys is a key event. The aim is to create a company offering design software, as well as simulation and analysis software to test the fruits of the design. It will also open up Synopsys' solutions to Ansys' wider range of end-market customers, particularly as semiconductors and electronics are increasingly being embedded in a range of new industries. The advanced materials company's lightweight composites are the future of the aerospace industry, as every new generation of airplane contains more composites. This means Hexcel (NYSE: HXL) can grow as airplane production increases (Airbus and Boeing have multiyear backlogs in place) and new, more composite-rich airplanes are developed. Hexcel has faced headwinds in recent years as Airbus' and Boeing's delivery rates have fallen short of expectations, but it's only a matter of time before they improve. Cognex (NASDAQ: CGNX) is another company with excellent long-term secular growth prospects (the use of machine vision in automated processes) that has suffered near-term headwinds (weakness in key end markets like automotive and consumer electronics). Still, this is a temporary slowdown in a long-term growth story. PTC (NASDAQ: PTC) provides computer-aided design (CAD), product lifecycle management (PLM), and other solutions essential to creating a so-called "digital thread" for a physical product as it moves from design through manufacturing, use, servicing, and ultimately disposal. As such, it's a leading player in the digitization of the industrial sector. Trimble's (NASDAQ: TRMB) precise positioning hardware (its origins) and growing software/services also make it a leading play on digitization. In Trimble's case, it's about integrating physical positioning with the digital world, such as in construction and infrastructure work, transportation, and geospatial activities. Through the use of advanced analytics in the digital world, Trimble's solutions can be integrated into its customers' daily workflows. Last but not least, Delta's growing mix of premium cabin revenue, loyalty program, co-brand card remuneration, and ability to adjust and compete in economy tickets when necessary means it's a much more diversified airline than a decade ago. In addition, as a network operator, it's much better positioned to deal with the growing cost pressures in the industry than low-cost carriers.
