Rassie Erasmus picks Varsity Cup star among Bok rookies
Winger Ntokozo Makhaza is one of nine uncapped players in a 54-man Springbok squad named by Rassie Erasmus for the start of the world champions' 2025 season.
The Boks face the Barbarians at Cape Town Stadium on June 28, followed by three Tests – against Italy (in Pretoria and Gqeberha on July 5 and 12) and Georgia (in Mbombela, July 9). The squad, which was confirmed today, includes 31 world cup winners and consists of 30 forwards and 24 backs.
Makhaza, who helped the UCT Ikeys win the 2025 Varsity Cup in April, is in line to represent the Boks for the first time with Marnus van der Merwe, Neethling Fouche, Asenathi Ntlabakanye, Cobus Wiese, Renzo du Plessis, Vincent Tshituka, Juarno Augustus and Ethan Hooker.
While Fouche and Hooker were members of the Springbok training squad last season, Tshituka and Augustus had a taste of the senior international structures after being included in the Springbok Showdown Green and Gold squads in 2020.
With the Vodacom Bulls, Sharks and Leinster still in the race for the URC final, along with their teammates from Bath, Leicester Tigers and Sale Sharks, who will contest the Premiership semi-finals this week, a staggered approach will be adopted to those players joining the camp.

The available players, which include the full Japan-based contingent following the conclusion of their season, will assemble in Johannesburg on Sunday and begin their on-field preparations on Monday. The rest of the players will join the squad as they complete their club commitments.
Five players, meanwhile, were not considered for selection due to injuries: Frans Malherbe, Elrigh Louw, Ben-Jason Dixon, Deon Fourie and Trevor Nyakane.
'We used a total of 50 players last season to balance the load on them, while at the same time building towards the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia, and with a few more talented youngsters in this group, we hope that they will learn valuable lessons and stake a strong claim for places in what will be a challenging, yet exciting season,' said Erasmus.
The squad will train from Monday to Friday, before returning home for the weekend to spend time with their families, and will reassemble on Sunday, 15 June for the second week of training, before travelling to Cape Town for the Barbarians match.

What time is kick off for Springboks v Barbarians?
Springbok fans can rejoice, the 2025 season will kick off this Saturday with a 'warm-up' clash against the Barbarians before the team then heads into a jampacked set of Test fixtures. After a brief period where the Springbok players returned home to spend time with their families over the last couple of days, the squad reassembled in Cape Town on Sunday to continue preparing for their encounter against the Barbarians. Kick off on Saturday is at 17:10. 'We are well on track with our preparations for the Barbarians game,' said coach Rassie Erasmus. 'Some of the players are making a strong return from injury, and we've now had time for the players to settle back into our setup from their franchises and clubs. 'Some of the players had fitness tests yesterday (last Tuesday) and have been involved in team meetings and been exposed to the way we want to do things on the field after the two alignment camps earlier in the year, so we are confident we'll all be back on the same page' The Springboks face the BaaBaas for the Qatar Airways Cup on Saturday (28 June), before lining up against Italy in back-to-back Tests in Pretoria (5 July) and Gqeberha (12 July) before they wrap up the Incoming Series against Georgia in Nelspruit (19 July). Zoning in on the Incoming Series, the double Rugby World Cup-winning coach said: 'Italy will obviously pose a different challenge. They did well in their first two Six Nations matches, but they are a team that we can analyse, although we will certainly not underestimate them. 'I've seen them beat us before, so it will be an important two matches against them. Georgia are also a challenging team on a good day, so the key for us will be to drive our own standards.' Forwards: Lood de Jager (Wild Knights), Jean-Luc du Preez (Sale Sharks), Thomas du Toit (Bath), Siya Kolisi, Eben Etzebeth, Vincent Koch, Bongi Mbonambi, Ox Nche, Vincent Tshituka (all Sharks), Neethling Fouche, Salmaan Moerat, Evan Roos (all Stormers), Jean Kleyn (Munster), Wilco Louw, Marco van Staden, Jan-Hendrik Wessels, Cobus Wiese, Ruan Nortje (all Bulls), Malcolm Marx (Kubota Spears), Franco Mostert (Honda Heat), Asenathi Ntlabakanye (Lions), Kwagga Smith (Shizuoka Blue Revs), RG Snyman (Leinster), Marnus van der Merwe (Scarlets), Boan Venter (Edinburgh), Jasper Wiese (Urayasu D-Rocks). Backs: Damian de Allende (Wild Knights), Faf de Klerk, Jesse Kriel (both Canon Eagles), Andre Esterhuizen, Aphelele Fassi, Makazole Mapimpi, Grant Williams, Ethan Hooker (all Sharks), Manie Libbok, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, Damian Willemse (all Stormers), Cheslin Kolbe (Tokyo Sungoliath), Kurt-Lee Arendse, Willie le Roux, Canan Moodie (all Bulls), Handre Pollard (Leicester Tigers), Cobus Reinach (Montpellier), Morne van den Berg, Edwilll van der Merwe (both Lions). Mamelodi Sundowns sending strong a strong message with Club World Cup exploits
THE REST OF the Betway Premiership teams better be prepared to eat Mamelodi Sundowns' dust yet again. How else can they begin to stop the high-flying Brazilians who are clearly of such high quality they can hold their own against the world's best? Sundowns may have lost 4-3 to Germany's Borussia Dortmund in their second Group F match at the FIFA Club World Cup currently on the go in the United States. But such was their performance against a much superior opponent there is every reason to foresee them dominating the domestic league yet again. Having won the local championship an eighth time in a row, Sundowns will be the team to beat yet again when the new season kicks off in August. The hope was that they will be properly challenged, with many of the view that perennial bridesmaids Orlando Pirates would run them close if not usurp them from the top perch. The Buccaneers were competitive last season and could – as per their former coach Jose Riveiro – have seriously challenged for the title had the teams played matches at the same time. That could well be, but the reality is that Sundowns were a cut above everyone yet again. What are the chances of the status quo changing in the 2025/26 campaign? Highly unlikely, at least based on how Sundowns have fared in the States so far. While they only beat South Korea's Ulsan 1-0 in their opening match, Sundowns were never in any danger of losing that match and were actually so in control that they could have won at a canter – scorer Iqraam Rayners having found the net on two other occasions. It was the second match against Dortmund that illustrated the Brazilians' class which is sure to take a lot from Pirates and the rest of the Premiership to bridge. The reality of that encounter is that Sundowns were the underdogs, The Yellow Submarine's quality and experience much superior. But an uninformed observer would not have told this much – at least not in the initial quarter-hour of the match when they dominated possession and even took the lead through a super goal by Lucas Ribeiro who'd been set on goal by a brilliant pass from Tashreeq Matthews who was evidently out to show his former club what they'd lost out on. What impressed me the most though was how Sundowns did not drop their heads after making uncharacteristic mistakes of literally giving Dortmund the equalizer as well as two other goals for the Germans to rush into a 4-1 lead by the hour mark. The fighting spirit, the tenacity and will they showed to reduce the deficit to the respectable level it ended at was uncharacteristic of South African teams usually renowned for their capitulation in such instances. It is a well they are sure to know to dip into next time, particularly in the CAF Champions League they are so keen to win yet again. Domestically, there just is no team that will be able to contend with Sundowns should they go into that mode. Granted, the likes of Pirates, Stellenbosch FC and perhaps Kaizer Chiefs, would have seen how Sundowns struggle with dealing with the high-press that Dortmund employed and they will seek to use that when they are next on the pitch with the record PSL champions. Yet it is difficult to imagine any of them forcing Sundowns into the kind of errors Dortmund did. Three of the German's goals were a result of their pressure on Sundowns, Ronwen Williams' passing the ball to sdfsdfdsa as he looked to play from the back as Sundowns typically do. Dortmund's second goal came about because they closed down Teboho Mokoena quickly before he could settle on the ball, something none of the PSL clubs do. In the domestic game, the Sundowns right backs are hardly ever forced into making last ditch tackles or clearances, a Khuliso Mudau for example almost always enjoying forays into the opposition halves instead of being on the backfoot. Dortmund got the right back to working hard Saturday evening and even forced him into scoring an own goal, sdfsdf Svensson As Sundowns sharpen themselves against world class opposition on the biggest stage of them all, their local adversaries are getting ready for pre-season training camps against ordinary opposition in Europe. Pirates, for example, are yet to announce who their new coach will be, and - even if it were to be Rulani Mokwena who knows Sundowns and the domestic scene pretty well – they just don't have the quality squad to match the Brazilians. Chiefs were pathetic in the previous campaign and while the decision to keep Nasredinne Nabi on as their coach might ensure some continuity, it is literally a continuation from zero given how far adrift they were from Sundowns in the league. And the signings they have made – bringing in a duo of free agents from Pirates for example – does not speak to a club intent on stopping a marauding opponent from dominating the league yet again. We must, therefore, brace ourselves for yet another Sundowns championship victory because just on the strength of their showing at the FIFA Club World Cup, the Brazilians are sure to walk to a ninth successive league title next season.

Springboks step up preparation for 2025 season opener against Barbarians in Cape Town
After two weeks of preparation, the Springboks are set to start their 2025 international season on Saturday against the Barbarians in Cape Town as they look to lay a strong platform for the rest of the year. Image: BackpagePix The Springboks are set to kick off their 2025 international season on Saturday against the Barbarians in Cape Town, in a year head coach Rassie Erasmus will likely finalise some experiments in his team. While the focus will remain on winning as many of their matches — they will play 13 Tests and the invitational match against the Baabaas — to maintain a healthy standing on the World Rugby rankings for the World Cup draw later this year, it will be the final season where the Boks can fully experiment with certain players to see if they will fit into the 2027 Rugby World Cup plans. The @Barbarian_FC will announce their final squad in the coming days - if you could bring one of these former #Springboks back, who would it be? 🫡 Don't miss out, grab your tickets now from Ticketmaster South Africa - click here: 🎟 There's rugby ...… — Springboks (@Springboks) June 21, 2025 Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ The showdown against the Barbarians at the DHL Stadium (5.10PM start) offers the reigning world champions the opportunity to shake off some rust after the off-season. However, it won't just be for that, they will also experiment with combinations while giving some senior players rest. All indications are that Erasmus will let loose a host of his World Cup-winning Boks against the Baabaas, especially those who play their rugby in Japan and haven't had a lot of game time recently. It could include the likes of Jesse Kriel and Kurt-Lee Arendse, while newbies like Asenathi Ntlabakanye and Vincent Tshituka could get a first Springbok run in the forwards. The bulk of the pack, though, should feature some core players who will be able to lay an early marker for the forwards as they look to keep their domination going in world rugby. 🗣️ "Is your output still the same? If you're 35 and you still do it, you can play!" Rassie Erasmus on his mindset when it comes to balancing youth with experience this season ⚖️ — SuperSport Rugby (@SSRugby) June 21, 2025 While the Barbarians match is a spectacle in its own right, it also serves an important purpose: laying the foundation for a crucial upcoming Test series against Italy on the 5th and 12th of July in Pretoria and Gqeberha and a one-off clash with Georgia in Nelspruit. With the Azzurri and Georgians steadily improving and hungry to challenge tier-one opposition, the Springboks will use these mid-year fixtures to fine-tune their systems, assess player form, bleed some new Test caps and build vital momentum for a demanding international calendar ahead. Over the next four weekends, they will put the blocks in place to defend their Rugby Championship crown including two home fixtures against Australia in August and double away Tests against the All Blacks — including the all-important one at Eden Park in Auckland on 6 September.
