Houseplant clinic: why is my begonia growing lopsided?

Houseplant clinic: why is my begonia growing lopsided?

The Guardian06-05-2025

What's the problem?
I moved my spotted begonia from the kitchen windowsill to the bathroom. It's had a massive growth spurt, and one of the stems has grown really long. Does it need repotting, or is something else going on?
Diagnosis
It sounds like your begonia is responding to the increased humidity and lower light in the bathroom. While the boost in moisture has probably encouraged lush growth, the extra-long, leggy stem suggests that the plant is stretching in search of light – a process known as etiolation. This can cause the plant to lose its compact, bushy shape as it puts all its energy into reaching towards a brighter spot. skip past newsletter promotion

Help! My rubber plant is droopy
Prescription
It may not need repotting, unless the roots are tightly packed or poking through the drainage holes. Try cutting back the leggy stem to encourage more balanced, bushier growth. You can even propagate the cutting in water or soil to create a new plant.
Prevention
To keep your begonia in good shape, rotate the pot regularly to encourage even growth. Put it in a spot with bright, indirect light and good humidity. Pruning occasionally will also help it stay full and bushy rather than tall and uneven.

OnlyFans confirms Bonnie Blue 'permanent ban' after porn star's latest sex stunt

Adult star Bonnie Blue, known for having sex with 1,057 men in a day, has been 'permanently banned' from OnlyFans for posting and intending to make 'extreme' content. This comes after the Derbyshire porn star was planning to break her own world record by sleeping with 2,000 men in a single day in a stunt she was branding a 'petting zoo'. An OnlyFans spokesperson told Metro: 'Extreme challenge content is not available on OnlyFans and is not permitted under our Acceptable Use Policy and Terms of Service. 'Any breach of our Terms of Service results in content or account deactivation… This is why it has been necessary to take this action. We always act when users breach our terms of service.' When Metro asked how long Bonnie's ban will be in place for, OnlyFans replied: 'The ban is permanent.' She has since revealed her 'petting zoo' stunt has been cancelled. OnlyFans has been valued at £8 billion thanks to its adult content creators — the same value as film studios, Paramount. The creators on the platform keep 80% of the money their subscriptions generate — which means Bonnie could be about to lose out on the £600,000 she claims to make each month. Back in 2021, OnlyFans had even announced it was going to ban all adult content from its platform, but this ban lasted six days before the company U-turned. Bonnie's decision to join OnlyFans in 2021 stemmed from the fact that she wasn't feeling happy with the direction her life was going in – and wanted a new challenge. She previously told Metro that she had given up on her dreams of being a midwife because she didn't want to stay in education, so she began working in recruitment. 'I thought, is this what my life is going to be? I realised I wasn't happy with 80% of my life. I didn't want to get old thinking I wish I'd done more,' she explained. Once she realised it wasn't for her, she sold her house and moved to Australia to live a 'beach lifestyle.' Using her savings, she was able to give up work for two years. Not wanting her time in Oz to be the only 'highlight' of her life, she first began working as a cam girl, inspired by other women doing the same thing online. Almost instantly, she was earning £2,030 a week. 'I loved it – it gave me so much confidence,' she said. But it was her antics last year that placed Bonnie firmly in the spotlight, when she posted call outs for 'barely legal' teens or 'schoolies', to sleep with her, setting herself up in student-heavy areas in the UK. All encounters were filmed, even if she was taking the teen's virginity, which caused outrage online and earned her the label of a predator. She has refuted these claims and says her content is educational. Bonnie took her content to the next level on January 11, when she slept with 1,057 men in a single day. The 25-year-old OnlyFans star announced her record-breaking sex marathon with an inflammatory Instagram caption, writing: 'Over 1,000 men in a day! Thank you to all the barely legal, barely breathing and the husbands.' The sex worker thanked the men who took part, saying: '1,057 isn't possible without volunteers… thanks for the fluids boys. 'Honestly thank you so much because if it wasn't for you turning up putting your **** inside me I wouldn't have any of this whatsoever, and it really has changed my life. Hopefully I can continue pleasuring you.' Men were put into groups of five had two minutes with Bonnie collectively, while those who had sex with her alone had 30 to 45 seconds. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Every man had penetrative sex with the OnlyFans star, although some also chose to have oral sex with Bonnie too. It's this type of extreme content that has led OnlyFans to take the decision to ban the star from its platform. It's not just Onlyfans that have taken issue with Bonnie's extreme challenges. Sophie Rain, 20, a leading OnlyFans creator and co-founder of Bop House – a collective of OF creators, hit out at Bonnie telling The Blast: 'It's no longer women empowerment. 'It's shock value, and she's making a joke out of all of us. We built this space to take control of our bodies and our finances, not to fake pregnancies, weddings, or throw cake at strangers in the street.' It appears she's also alluding to the fake pregnancy stunt pulled by Bonnie's rival Lily Phillips, who hit headlines after sleeping with 101 men in a day. More Trending 'Brands don't take us seriously anymore. Media doesn't take us seriously,' Sophie added. 'I'm tired of explaining that not all of us are doing circus acts for views.' To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video British broadcaster Ashley Louise James also challenged Bonnie back in November on This Morning on her 'predatory pursuit of teenage boys and her antagonistic (and outdated) attitudes to women'. She followed up on Instagram, saying: 'Bonnie has openly bragged about have sex with 'fresh 18 year olds' and has described it as 'babysitting adults' and even declared that she 'loves taking virginities'. 'I find this behaviour disturbing and predatory. I also find it deeply disturbing and disgusting that there are so many men and boys willing to queue up and have sex with her.' Wedding guest dressing has turned tacky thanks to celebs like Georgia Steel – boob-bursting dresses belong in Benidorm

There's a big emerging trend on the high street this wedding season that creates a sense of elegance - without having to have your boobs and bum out WHAT THE FROCK? Wedding guest dressing has turned tacky thanks to celebs like Georgia Steel – boob-bursting dresses belong in Benidorm WEARING white as a wedding guest used to be a cardinal sin and the ultimate insult to the bride. But nowadays there's a far worse style crime. Advertisement 8 Kim Kardashian sported a cleavage-baring gown paired with strappy heels at her former assistant's wedding Credit: Mega 8 Kendall Jenner wore a barely-there cut-out black gown to her pal's wedding Credit: laurenperez/Instagram 8 At Hailey and Justin Bieber's wedding, fans accused Kylie Jenner of trying to steal the bride's limelight by wearing a gold, floor-sweeping gown Credit: Instagram Gone are tailored trouser suits, chic two-pieces and glamorous, ankle-skimming gowns. Instead, you're more likely to spot looks you would find on the strip in Benidorm. Advertisement Think bum-skimming Lycra mini-dresses, skimpy bra tops, or dresses with sky-high thigh slits and boob-baring cut-outs. One of the things I love about a wedding — aside from dancing to Come On Eileen and drinking a headache-inducing amount of champers, — is getting dressed up. I'm talking sophisticated dresses, stylish hats and fascinators and killer heels for the girls, and sharp suits for the blokes. The novelty of getting spruced up to the nines makes the special day all that more exciting and memorable. Passing judgement on others' outfits while you wait for the bride to make her entrance (which, admit it, we all do) is a big part of it, too. Advertisement I'm out of the 'going to a wedding every other weekend' age bracket now — and what a relief, because the looks that seem to be trending wouldn't be out of place in the queue for an Oceana nightclub. Across social media, scantily-clad twenty-somethings share their wedding outfits with pride — while I gawp, with prejudice. A quick Google search for 'wedding guest outfits' produces dozens of brands' standalone pages dedicated solely to this category. Frankie Bridge is slammed by fans for 'OTT' wedding guest dress - as people warn 'don't upstage the bride' But as you scroll through the likes of Club L, Oh Polly and River Island, you'll find that the dresses and gowns — yes, Gen Z wear full-on gowns now — are better suited to the Love Island finale than a wedding in your local country house hotel. And, like most trends, we have celebrities to blame. Advertisement When Dani Dyer wed footballer Jarrod Bowen last week, guest and fellow Love Islander Georgia Steel was slated for wearing what looked like a revealing white dress to her pal's big day. After Georgia posted a snap on TikTok of the lace-trimmed Miss Circle number she wore, the trolls came out in force, bashing her for picking what was in fact a 'soft beige' dress. 'Wearing white to a wedding?' questioned one, while another waded in with: 'Way too bridal for a wedding.' And Georgia isn't alone. Two months ago, White Lotus actress Sydney Sweeney came under fire for the 'inappropriate' dress she wore to her Anyone But You co-star Glenn Powell's sister's wedding. Across social media, scantily-clad twenty-somethings share their wedding outfits with pride — while I gawp, with prejudice Clemmie She chose a cleavage-baring corset-style dress from V Chapman in a very pale blue. Advertisement Fans thought the colour was an issue. Comments included: 'That is not an appropriate shade of blue for a wedding' and 'The number one [rule] of a wedding is don't wear anything close to white.' 8 Love Islander Georgia Steel was slated for wearing this dress to Dani Dyer's big day Credit: Instagram 8 Sydney Sweeney was slammed for wearing a cleavage-baring corset-style dress to co-star Glenn Powell's sister's wedding Credit: Instagram 8 Hailey wore a backless white dress to a friend's big day in 2023 Credit: Instagram/@haileybieber Advertisement Personally, I take no issue with guests wearing white at a wedding. As long as they aren't also wearing a long veil (cropped veils on fascinators are allowed), who cares? Especially during summer, when every other dress on the high street is some shade of white. No one at the wedding is going to mistake someone else as the bride. It's the bride's name on the invite and her kissing the groom — so no need for the unnecessary uproar. However, what I would take issue with is the plunging neckline and lingerie-style basque of Sydney's outfit and, in Georgia's case, the fact her lacy dress is practically see-through. Don't get me wrong, Sydney is a knock-out, and if I looked like that, I'd be wearing sexy numbers, too — just not to a wedding. Advertisement As one person commented online: 'Kinda tacky to wear to a wedding. C'mon Syds, you can do better.' And she can. The woman is an ambassador for designer brand Miu Miu, for crying out loud. Raid something from their archives that's less underwear-like and more sophisticated. But it's not just Sydney. Kendall Jenner wore a heavily cut-out black gown to her pal's wedding, which sent the internet into meltdown due to its slashed fabric that barely covered her nipples. And her sister, Kylie, has also faced outfit-shaming from keyboard warriors. Don't get me wrong, Sydney is a knock-out, and if I looked like that, I'd be wearing sexy numbers, too — just not to a wedding Clemmie At Hailey and Justin Bieber's wedding, fans accused her of trying to steal the bride's limelight by wearing a gold, floor-sweeping gown with peek-a-boo cleavage and a hip-high slit. On X, one critic wrote: 'If someone tries to pull a Kylie Jenner move like this at my wedding . . . they will kindly be escorted out with a red wine stain down the front of their dress.' Advertisement Ouch! But then Hailey wore a backless white dress to a friend's big day in 2023, which broke all the so-called wedding rules for looking just like a bridal gown. When it comes to these codes, they're subjective and are dependent on the wedding location. If you're lucky enough to be a guest at a ceremony abroad in a hot country, sitting in a long-sleeve, high-neck, polyester dress at noon is going to give you heatstroke. And wearing a tailored pencil midi dress to sit on a bale of hay in a field will make you stick out like a sore thumb. I get it. I've been there myself and it's a minefield. But if in doubt, aim for a more demure style. Advertisement Don't copy the under-boob and pelvis-flashing looks of young celebs — think more of the women who have nailed the guest brief. Keep it classy Cast your mind back to happier times when Meghan Markle and Prince Harry got married. Amal Clooney, in a yellow, capped-sleeve midi-dress by Stella McCartney, was crowned best-dressed guest in attendance. Bold, but without being in danger of over-shadowing the bride, it was perfect. 8 Demi Moore was a flawless royal wedding guest in a burgundy dress and matching veiled hat by Stella McCartney Credit: Getty 8 Amal Clooney, in a yellow, capped-sleeve midi-dress by Stella McCartney, was crowned best-dressed guest in attendance at Meghan and Harry's wedding Credit: Getty Advertisement Another flawless guest at a royal wedding was Demi Moore. She battled gale-force winds in a burgundy dress and matching veiled hat — again, by Stella McCartney — when Princess Eugenie married Jack Brooksbank in 2018. And she looked incredible. Cindy Crawford's daughter, actress Kaia Gerber, also got it right when she wore a classy, long-sleeved dress from Reformation to a friend's 2018 wedding in Miami, Florida. At the time, the navy, slit-leg frock retailed for £180, proving that even supermodels with designer brands at their fingertips can look amazing in high street buys. A big emerging trend on the high street this wedding season seems to be minimal frocks with slinky scarves, which are intended to be worn draped down your back, not wrapped around you like a winter woollen. Advertisement They create a sense of elegance without having to have your boobs and bum out. So if you are heading to someone's nuptials this summer, keep it classy, girls. Underwear as outerwear and flesh-flashing cut-outs are for the weekend, not for a wedding.

I drove updated Renault Austral… it's a decently priced, edgier version of old model that's a great choice for families

The front and rear ends have been substantially redesigned and successfully banish that uninspiring vibe the previous generation gave off AUSTRAL THE WAY I drove updated Renault Austral… it's a decently priced, edgier version of old model that's a great choice for families IT will never be a darling of the chic Renault set like the trending 4 and 5, but Austral has been given another season to try and reel in the punters, now with more contemporary looks and boosted refinement. Being one of arguably seven SUVs in Renault's line-up doesn't help the sensibly-sized Austral stand out from the crowd. Advertisement 3 Austral isn't as trendy as Renault's 4 or 5 – but it's back with sharper styling and slicker refinement to win over families 3 The front and rear ends have been substantially redesigned and successfully banish that uninspiring vibe the previous generation gave off 3 The mega comfy new seats are a revelation here. Love at first sit But Renault likes to call this 'choice', not overkill. Bosses swear blind their SUVs don't compete with each other but rather complement. Regardless of Gallic spin, we do agree that choice is a good thing. Austral is the last Renault to receive the brand's latest design language, and with that it is ultimately a facelift of the 2022 car rather than an all-new motor. Advertisement The front and rear ends have been substantially redesigned and successfully banish that uninspiring vibe the previous generation gave off. Cleaner, edgier, more posh. As a full-hybrid – that's one without a plug – it's capable of taking you up to 683 miles on one tank of gas thanks to its frugal 1.2-litre turbo engine, pair of electric motors and diddy 2kWh battery, which combine to deliver out a brilliant 58mpg. It also does it with notably more comfort than before. The mega comfy new seats are a revelation here. Love at first sit. Advertisement Sound insulation has been significantly bolstered to deliver decently hushed progress. And the upgraded gearbox and suspension dial out the sub-premium edges of the older model's ride and handling – despite my test car rocking the big new 20in alloy rims option. The Sun's Motors Editor Rob Gill takes the new electric Renault 5 for a spin It also comes loaded with the full Google suite, including Google Maps navigation and Google Assistant voice control, with handy over-the-air software updates through the 12in portrait touchscreen so things can only get better yet. While there is only one automatic powertrain available there will be three trim levels from launch that starts with the £35k Techno. Advertisement The line-up tops out with the £39k Iconic Esprit Alpine. Austral Season 2 is out August and well worth putting on your watchlist That's pretty decent pricing for a decently efficient, decent looking, decently tech'd-up SUV that will take 527 litres of family junk in the trunk. Austral Season 2 is out August and well worth putting on your watchlist.
