Independent04-06-2025

Canoe trips along the Amazon and meetings with indigenous communities are among the experiences that cruise line CroisiEurope is set to offer as the brand prepares to debut on the world's longest river in 2027.
The European river cruise will debut RV Brasilian Dream in 2027 with three 11-day itineraries to choose from – The Amazon & Rio Negro round trip from Manaus, The Amazon & Rio Tapajos between Manaus and Santarém, and Cruise Along the Amazon Between Brazil & Colombia, which sails between Manaus and Tabatinga.
From January to June, cruise passengers will be able to explore the flooded forest by canoe, getting up close to river dolphins and aquatic birds. Between July and December, itineraries will focus on the region's white sandy beaches and abundant wildlife along the riverbanks.
Highlights of the cruises will include visits to major parks and UNESCO-type protected areas, while passengers will be able to observe wildlife in dinghies and from dugout canoes.
There will also be meetings with indigenous communities, evening excursions and visits to villages on stilts along the riverbank, plus the chance to learn about local crafts, plants and produce and a variety of on-board lectures.
Further details, including dates, prices and when bookings will open will be announced at the beginning of July 2025.
The cruises will take place on the new 32-guest RV Brasilian Dream, a four-deck ship inspired by Amazonian culture. Accommodation includes 16 suites with private balconies, including two presidential suites suspended between the sky and water. There will also be a gourmet restaurant serving Brazilian-inspired dishes, a spa, fitness room, sun deck and a conference room.
As part of its commitment to protecting and preserving the Amazon, CroisiEurope said it is implementing the latest eco innovations, including engines that meet the strictest environmental standards, an advanced wastewater treatment system and solar panels that will allow the ship to shut down its generators at night and operate on batteries.

US Treasury extends license protecting Citgo from creditors to December

June 20 (Reuters) - The U.S. Treasury Department on Friday extended a general license protecting Venezuela-owned refiner Citgo Petroleum from creditors through December 20, the department's website showed, opens new tab. Washington has protected the Houston-based company from creditors in recent years even amid a court-organized auction of shares in its parent company, PDV Holding. Once selected, the auction's winner must be approved by the Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control. The license temporarily bans transactions with a Venezuela-issued bond collateralized with Citgo equity. The previous license was set to expire on July 3. As part of an eight-year case introduced by miner Crystallex against Venezuela, a federal court in Delaware has found Citgo's parent PDV Holding liable for Venezuela's debts stemming from debt defaults and asset expropriations. The auction, whose winner will by selected next month, is expected to compensate some of those creditors.

Brazil to push for corporate, local government climate targets at COP30

BRASILIA, June 20 (Reuters) - COP30 president Brazil on Friday proposed expanding emissions reduction commitments to include pledges from companies, states, and cities, aiming to bolster global climate efforts following the U.S. withdrawal from the Paris Agreement. Brazilian diplomats preparing for the climate summit have been working closely with the U.N. to encourage countries to submit updated targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by September, after many missed the February deadline. The Paris accord, in which almost all nations agreed to limit warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius from pre-industrial levels, requires countries to submit such targets, known as Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), and update them every few years. In a letter released Friday, COP30 President Ambassador Andre Correa do Lago proposed widening the path for reducing emissions by creating a "global NDC" that would incorporate targets from various actors, not just countries, to transform the Global Stocktake - the process for reviewing Paris Agreement progress. "Our aim is to bring a new dynamic to global climate action, aligning the efforts made by businesses, civil society and all levels of government in coordinated action," Lago wrote, proposing the term "GDC," or "globally determined contribution," for the expanded initiative. While Lago did not explicitly frame the initiative as a response to U.S. policy changes, he acknowledged it would allow participation from U.S. companies and local governments that have kept their commitment to help curb climate change despite the Trump administration's formal exit from the Paris Agreement. "Our action agenda is opening up a lot of space for the U.S. side that wants to participate," Lago said, adding the proposal would also encourage countries with conservative emissions targets to be more ambitious. The Brazilian diplomat said private sector actors often move faster on climate action than governments, which are vulnerable to complex considerations such as the role of oil companies in spurring economic growth or the costs of transforming electricity grids. Dan Ioschpe, a Brazilian businessman appointed as COP30's "climate champion," said the initiative would provide clarity for non-state actors to align with Paris Agreement goals. "Not only in the United States, but in general in countries where the national government is not so involved in the issue, we are seeing governors, mayors, and the private sector extremely involved," Ioschpe said. COP30, to be hosted in the Amazonian city of Belem in November, marks the 10th anniversary of the Paris accord.

Barcelona star Lamine Yamal has taken to Brazil to link up with idol Neymar while the Club World Cup takes place - just weeks after the 17-year-old holidayed with a 29-year-old OnlyFans star. Yamal had previously been full of praise for Neymar, who is now plying his trade back with Santos in his homeland after a brief spell in Saudi Arabia. The Barcelona wonderkid said of the 33 year-old - who also previously played for the Catalan side: 'Neymar has always been my idol. He's a star, a football legend.' And he has now seemingly been invited to his idol's home. This week, the duo have visited Neymar's home in Mangaratiba, Rio de Janeiro, with a number of videos shared to social media. Spanish magazine Lecturas published images of the pair on a jet ski together on the island of Pantelleria in the south of Sicily. It followed Yamal and Vazquez posting photos from the same location in recent days, with the pair enjoying a life of luxury that has included going on a boat trip, relaxing by a pool and flying in a helicopter. Lecturas wrote that the pair 'don't want to put a name to their obvious friendship', but said they 'get along perfectly'. 'Their closeness is such that they didn't hesitate to go on vacation at a key moment,; they added. 'They wanted to get away from it all and celebrate the season's many successes.' The report claimed there is a 'clear connection between them' and 'the age difference is not an obstacle to their understanding'. Yamal, however, has denied that they are a couple after speaking with gossip expert Javi de Hoyos. De Hoyos claims 'he's been able to speak to Yamal, and he categorically denies that he's with Vazquez; he says they have nothing going on. 'Lamine didn't go to this vacation spot alone, but with other Barca team-mates,' De Hoyos added.
