Dodgers' Roki Sasaki Resumes Throwing Program in Recovery From Shoulder Injury
Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Roki Sasaki has restarted his throwing program as he continues his recovery from a right shoulder injury.
Manager Dave Roberts said the 23-year-old phenom threw from 60 to 90 feet Friday in his return to workouts after a brief pause. "That was a bonus," he said. "That was a plus. Chatted with him briefly afterward. He was excited about it."
The Dodgers had halted Sasaki's throwing program for the previous several days because he didn't feel comfortable throwing at full intensity. Roberts confirmed that Sasaki has remained pain-free, but must build up his arm to game strength in a process that will take at least a few more weeks.
Sasaki went on the injured list May 13 with right shoulder impingement, and the Dodgers transferred him to the 60-day injured list earlier Friday to make room on their roster for their latest trade acquisition, left-hander Zach Penrod.
Roberts said Sasaki's move to the 60-day list was "procedural (and) the progression … doesn't affect that at all."
Sasaki began his first stateside season in the Dodgers' rotation, going 1-1 with a 4.72 ERA and a 1.49 WHIP in eight starts while adjusting to his move from Japan to MLB. The Dodgers shut down Sasaki after he developed pain in his shoulder, but the two-time Nippon Professional Baseball All-Star began throwing again earlier this month.
The Dodgers currently have a mere 13 pitchers on the injured list after having as many as 15 injured hurlers in recent weeks — and Sasaki isn't the only key starter making progress in his recovery.
Tyler Glasnow will throw two innings Sunday for Triple-A Oklahoma City in his first rehab assignment, Roberts said. The $136.5 million right-hander has been on the injured list since April 28 with right shoulder inflammation.
Two-time Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell will throw a bullpen session soon at Dodger Stadium, Roberts said. The left-hander made only two starts to begin the first season of his $182 million deal before going on the injured list with left shoulder inflammation.
Shohei Ohtani threw a bullpen session on schedule Friday despite getting hit by a pitch in his pitching shoulder in the ninth inning of the Dodgers' contentious 5-3 loss to the San Diego Padres on Thursday night. Ohtani is still scheduled to make his second mound start for the Dodgers on Sunday.

Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — Luke Weaver felt fine about everything in his return for the New York Yankees — except the fastball Ramon Urias hit for a go-ahead homer in the eighth inning. Weaver was activated from the injured list Friday, but his first game back from a strained left hamstring was spoiled when Urías poked a full-count 96.4 mph fastball into the first row of the right field seats for the Baltimore Orioles. 'I feel great,' Weaver said after taking the loss in the Yankees' 5-3 defeat. 'The only thing that hurts is my heart and mind. So, at the end of the day, my leg feels great. The velocity's there. All the pitches are there. So, I had everything I needed to be successful. It's just a game which (it) didn't happen.' After jogging in from the bullpen to the 'Imperial March' from Star Wars and Gary Wright's 'Dreamweaver,' Weaver got ahead with his fastball and changeup. He threw two changeups to even the count and another fastball for a full-count. On the next pitch, Urías hit a 337-foot jump that just went over the leaping try of Aaron Judge and deflected off a fan's shirt in the first row. Following the homer, Weaver struck out Colton Cowser but walked Gary Sanchez and allowed a single to pinch-hitter Ryan O'Hearn. After Dylan Carlson lined out, Tim Hill allowed a RBI single to pinch-hitter Gunnar Henderson. Weaver gave up two runs and two hits in two-thirds of an inning. It was the third homer allowed in 25 appearances for the right-hander, who missed 17 games. 'I don't think that far off,' Yankees manager Aaron Boone said of Weaver. 'They just took advantage of some pitches.' Weaver was injured while warming up before a game against the Los Angeles Dodgers on June 1 at Dodger Stadium. After being placed on the injured list, the Yankees thought Weaver might be out until early July or through the All-Star break. A 31-year-old who can become a free agent after the season, Weaver supplanted Clay Holmes as closer last September. From May 20-22, Weaver became the first Yankees pitcher to make appearance on three consecutive regular-season days since Aroldis Chapman in September 2021 — though Weaver's first outing in that stretch lasted just two pitches, and the three totaled 18. Williams converted all four save chances while Weaver was injured and has a 1.76 ERA in his last 16 appearances since May 5. Caitlin Clark and Napheesa Collier lead early fan-voting for WNBA All-Star Game
Indiana star Caitlin Clark has an early lead in the fan voting for next month's WNBA All-Star Game, the league announced Friday. The guard received 515,993 votes and was followed by Minnesota Lynx forward Napheesa Collier, who garnered 484,758 votes. There were three other Indiana players in the top 10 with Aliyah Boston third, Kelsey Mitchell seventh and Lexie Hull ninth. This year's game will be played in Indiana on July 19. A'ja Wilson of Las Vegas and Breanna Stewart of New York were fourth and fifth in the balloting, respectively. The two were the captains for the All-Star Game in 2022 and 2023. Sabrina Ionescu, Stewart's teammate, was eighth, while rookies Paige Bueckers of Dallas, in sixth, and Kiki Iriafen of Washington, in 10th, rounded out the top 10. Cal Raleigh breaks Johnny Bench's record for homers by a catcher before All-Star break
CHICAGO -- Cal Raleigh broke Hall of Famer Johnny Bench's 1970 record for home runs by a catcher before the All-Star break, hitting his major league-leading 28th and 29th in the Seattle Mariners' 9-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Friday. Raleigh put Seattle ahead and moved past Bench in the seventh inning with No. 29, a drive to the back of the left-field bleachers off Caleb Thielbar. 'Any time you're mentioned in even the same sentence with one of the best, if not the best ever do it is a special thing,' Raleigh said. 'I'm just very grateful. He's one heck of a player or was one heck of a player. And like I said, just very, very happy about it.' Raleigh needed only 73 games to break the record that Bench set in 87 games. The Seattle star shattered the mark with 22 games to spare before the All-Star game. Barry Bonds holds the overall record with 39 for San Francisco in 2001. Raleigh sent his first homer just over the basket in the first off Matthew Boyd. The 28-year-old slugger had three hits in his sixth multi-homer game of the season. He drove in three runs to push his season total to 63. Bench was a 14-time All-Star in his 17-season career with the Cincinnati Reds. In 1970, at age 22, he became the youngest player to win the National League MVP award. He led the NL with 45 homers and drove in 148 runs. Seattle's Mitch Garver, a catcher by position, hit two homers and drove in five runs as a designated hitter. The duo stole the thunder from the NL-Central leading Chicago on a day when Sammy Sosa returned to Wrigley Field for the first time in over 20 years. Raleigh and Garver are the first pair of primary catchers for a team to each homer twice since Joe Ferguson and Steve Yeager did it for the Los Angeles Dodgers in a 1979 home victory over Houston.
