Airfares to the US are now the cheapest in years – but people aren't buying
Transatlantic airfares from Europe to the United States have plummeted to pre-pandemic levels, driven by a significant downturn in travel from Western European nations.
Preliminary figures indicate a 2.8 per cent drop in overall overseas arrivals to the US in May, largely due to a 4.4 per cent decrease in travel from Western Europe.
The decline is attributed to factors such as a stronger dollar and a political climate that has led Europeans to reconsider travel to the US.
Airlines including Air France KLM and Lufthansa anticipate weaker demand in the third quarter and are cutting prices to maintain full cabins on transatlantic routes.
Increased demand from US travellers flying to Europe is helping to offset the decline in European travel to the US.

Audi May Take Drastic Action To Dodge Tariffs
German Media Fears Massive Costs The ongoing uncertainty around how bad tariffs may get ahead of the July 9 deadline for agreement, for European automakers in particular, is no reason to stay idle. Regardless of what the final impact will be, tariffs aren't going anywhere anytime soon, and according to German magazine Der Spiegel, Audi is considering building a production facility somewhere in the southern U.S. to minimize the effects. But it's not an easy call to make. As noted by Automotive News, building a plant here would be 'the more expensive option out of a number of scenarios being considered, with company sources estimating costs of up to €4 billion (approximately $4.6 billion). So will it happen anyway? Audi has been rumored to be examining the viability of a U.S. plant for several years, but up until now, the automaker has been performing relatively well in America, although Audi's 2024 sales showed a sharp year-on-year decline of 14%, indicating that changes must be made somewhere, regardless of current or future tariff measures. To help effect that change, Audi is working on a fresh new design language, and U.S. manufacturing (or at least assembly) may help future arrivals find broader appeal with competitive pricing. BMW has been producing cars in South Carolina since 1994, and in those 30-odd years, it's grown to become the largest automotive exporter by value in the U.S. Perhaps Audi would benefit from a similar approach. Where Audi Could Put Down Roots As part of the Volkswagen Group, Audi wouldn't necessarily have to start from scratch. The VW brand operates a plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where the ID.4 EV and the Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport SUVs are produced, and its Scout Motors brand is building one in Columbia, South Carolina. But that's it – Porsche won't be moving production to America because its sales volumes would not justify such extensive investment, and its customer base is not unused to absorbing exorbitant price increases. As we noted earlier, Audi hasn't made a decision yet because it's exploring other options. One of those reportedly is to negotiate a tariff import deal with the U.S. government, which compatriot automakers BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and VW are said to be collaboratively pursuing alongside the Ingolstadt-based manufacturer. Adam Levine and wife Behati Prinsloo seemed to be having the time of their lives if photos the model posted on social media are any indication. Prinsloo, 37, shared the fun-filled photos on her Instagram page on Thursday, writing that they were reflecting 'A slice of heaven,' though she didn't say where they and their family and friends were visiting. The couple appeared to be reinvigorating their romance almost three years after their marriage was beset by the Maroon 5 frontman's sordid 'sexting' scandal. Levine, 46, and his family chartered a luxury yacht that appeared to be tooling around the Mediterranean. One photo showed the runway regular flaunting her long, lean legs in a navy blue one-piece bathing suit with white trim. The cover model placed a dark towel over her shoulder and wore a beige billed hat and sunglasses as folks behind her worked with a motorized dingy used to transport guests to shore. A group shot featured several adults and kids out on the deck of the ship enjoying a little sunbathing. Family and friends, the best!❤️,' commented a fan. 'Perfection!' stated another. Many guessed the group was enjoying time in Italy after seeing a photo of Levine in front of a Gelato sign. The scene of domestic bliss was a far cry from the drama of 2022, when the Levine–Prinsloo marriage was rocked after several women shared screenshots of what they said were flirty texts sent to them by the singer. One of the women even claimed to have had an affair with the Misery singer, which he denied. He did, however, apologize for the inappropriate messages, saying he 'used poor judgment in speaking with anyone other than my wife in ANY kind of flirtatious manner.' Earlier in the week, Prinsloo posted a sweet selfie of herself and Levine, writing 'LOML [Love of my Life]' next to it. Levine and Maroon 5 have a light summer touring schedule planned. The band is set to perform in Endicott, New York, on July 11; New York City on August 11 and September 19 in Las Vegas at the iHeart Music Festival.
