Nation prepared to host 2036 Olympic Games: Delhi CM Rekha Gupta

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said on Sunday that the entire country, including the national capital, is fully prepared to host the 2036 Olympic Games and hoped that the global community would grant this honour to India.
Speaking at an event to flag off the Olympic Day Run from Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium along with Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya, CM Gupta said, 'If the global community grants the honour of hosting Olympic Games, India would organise the sports extravaganza with full dedication.'
President of the Indian Olympic Association, P.T. Usha, was also present at the event.
CM Gupta said the Olympic Day celebration and run in Delhi has brought immense joy, as thousands of residents are participating enthusiastically.
She said, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the nation is continuously progressing towards better sports infrastructure and facilities.
The Olympic Day Run was held under the IOC's 'Let's Move' campaign, promoting fitness and inclusivity. The event saw enthusiastic participation citywide.
Mandaviya also led the Fit India Sunday on Cycle campaign, promoting fitness and environmental awareness.
Last month, Fit India Sundays on Cycle witnessed enthusiastic participation from 750 participants, including teachers, athletes, Fit India influencers and fitness lovers.
Leading the charge was Mandaviya, who cycled alongside Union Sports Secretary Hari Ranjan Rao along with a powerful line-up of national icons, including Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Ravi Dahiya, Olympian and Commonwealth Games gold medalist Deepak Punia, Guinness World Record holder Rohtash Chaudhary (Push-up Man of India), and renowned mountaineer Narender Kumar, who recently scaled Mount Annapurna, the 10th highest mountain in the world at 8091 meters, in a record time of 12 days.
Themed 'Cycling with Teachers', the event witnessed educators, mentors, and academic coaches from various educational institutions across the city, including schools, universities and private institutes.
'Teachers are the heroes for our students, and now, you have to become heroes for Viksit Bharat. You all can make cycling a fashion, and I urge all teachers to restart using cycles themselves and ask students to emulate the same,' said the Minister.

‘Ahmedabad on path to becoming Games-ready'

Gandhinagar: On the eve of World Olympic Day, which is being observed on Monday, Gujarat govt said that Ahmedabad is rapidly moving towards becoming the host city for the 2036 Olympics. Last Oct, the Indian Olympic Association made a formal bid for India to host the 2036 Games, and Ahmedabad is a strong contender, the govt said on Sunday. An official statement said that as part of the preparations, the Gujarat Sports Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (GSID) is the nodal agency and will be building six sports complexes for Rs 6,000 crore. In addition, new sports facilities will be built in Pethapur, Karai Police Academy, GIFT City, and Manipur-Godhavi. These facilities in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar will be able to host more than 80% of the Games events, the official statement said. The govt said that the Sports Authority of Gujarat (SAG) has 24 district-level and six taluka-level sports complexes. In addition, 20 sports hostels in the state provide residential and training facilities to as many as 4,000 sportspersons. "SAG is working to boost the sports ecosystem by strengthening the sports infrastructure in the state through a total of 31 new sports complexes, including 13 at the district level and 18 at the taluka level, in the coming time," the statement said. The new sports complexes will come up in 13 districts, including Amreli, Anand, Bharuch, Botad, Chhota Udepur, Devbhumi Dwarka, Gir Somnath, Jamnagar, Mahisagar, Morbi, Navsari, Surendranagar and Valsad.

Hockey: Two-time Olympic medallist Lalit Kumar Upadhyay announces retirement from international hockey

Indian forward Lalit Kumar Upadhyay announced his retirement from international hockey on Sunday, bringing down the curtains on a career that lasted more than a decade and saw him be a part of two Olympic Games bronze medal-winning teams. 'This journey began in a small village, with limited resources but limitless dreams. From facing a sting operation to standing on the Olympic podium — not once, but twice — it's been a path full of challenges, growth, and unforgettable pride. Becoming an Olympian from my city after 26 years is something I'll always carry with honor and gratitude,' Lalit posted on his social media accounts. Lalith played in four matches of the eight that India played in Europe to close out their 2024-'25 Pro League season. The last match he played was against Australia in on 15 June. He has played 183 matches for India in senior international hockey, scoring 67 goals. The 31-year-old from Uttar Pradesh thanked various people who have played a part in his career. 'To my first coach Shri Parmanand Mishra, who introduced me to hockey and built my foundation. To Harender Sir, who gave me my first break by picking me in Air India. To Sameer Bhai and Dhanraj Sir, who mentored me with care and belief during that time. To BPCL, for offering me a job and giving me 8 meaningful years of work and growth. To my friends and teammates, who made the journey unforgettable. To Hockey India for giving me the opportunity to wear the national jersey. More recently, the forward who has scored some memorable goals through his career, has struggled for consistency and with younger forwards coming through the ranks, has decided to call time. You've left behind a legacy that will continue to guide and motivate the next generation.'
