Ramasamy claims trial to 17 CBT charges

BUTTERWORTH: Former Penang deputy chief minister II P Ramasamy was charged with 17 counts of criminal breach of trust (CBT) today involving Penang Hindu Endowments Board (PHEB) funds during his time at its helm. Ramasamy, who was the PHEB chairman from 2010 to 2023, is accused of using RM859,131.29 in PHEB funds between May 2019 and February 2022 without obtaining the board's formal approval. Thirteen charges against the 76-year-old are linked to the procurement of a RM779,131.29 gold-plated Thaipusam chariot in 2019. Two charges are linked to RM65,000 in medical assistance to individuals, while two other charges are linked to RM15,000 in education sponsorships. Ramasamy pleaded not guilty after the charges were read out before judge Zulhazmi Abdullah at the sessions court here. The charges were framed under Section 409 of the Penal Code, which provides for a maximum jail term of 20 years, whipping, and a fine upon conviction. Bail was set at RM78,000. Lawyers Shamsher Singh Thind, Eng Yuh Pei, and Archana Chandrasekaran represented Ramasamy while Azura Zulkiflee and Nurnajihatul Idayu Azuyar prosecuted. Selva Mookiah held a watching brief for the PHEB. During mitigation, Shamsher said Ramasamy had cooperated with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) throughout the investigation process, including by paying a RM20,000 MACC bond when he was first arrested on May 12, 2024. Shamsher also said his client had not bothered anyone during the investigation or put anyone in PHEB under duress. 'The court must take his character, means, and standing into account. He is an Indian community leader without a title,' he said. UM Crowned Champion Of 31st Environmental Debate Competition
SERI ISKANDAR, June 22 (Bernama) -- Universiti Malaya (UM) emerged as the champion of the 31st Environmental Debate Competition held at Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) here tonight, defeating 28 other institutions of higher learning. Azhad Hafiz described the win as a hard-earned triumph, marking the team's long-awaited success after coming in second place in 2019. "Back in 2019, we reached the final but only managed to be runners-up. This year, Alhamdulillah, we proved that UM can be champions,' he told Bernama. He added that environmental debate posed a unique challenge, requiring in-depth knowledge and understanding of issues to construct strong arguments. UTP secured second place and received an accompanying trophy, RM7,000, and certificates, while Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) came in third, winning RM2,000, a trophy, and certificates. The prizes were presented by deputy secretary-general of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES), Datuk Nor Yahati Awang. Also present were UTP provost Datuk Ir Dr Mohamed Ibrahim Abdul Mutalib, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) deputy vice-chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) Professor Dr Mohd Izani Mohd Zain, who also chairs the University Debate Council (MADUM), and Petronas Group Health, Safety, Security and Environment vice president, Zamri Japar.

Police to investigate poster burning at student rally

Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun said the case will be probed under the Sedition Act and Penal Code and referred to the Attorney-General's Chambers once completed. He confirmed no arrests have been made but noted that many tourists witnessed the act, which caused public concern near the busy Gaya Street Sunday Market. The protest was held with police approval and aimed to demand government accountability, anti-corruption reforms, and solutions to campus infrastructure problems. Victims of fraudulent haj package urge others to be cautious
NILAI: 'Let our painful experience be a lesson to others.' That is the heartfelt plea of Malaysian pilgrims who were left devastated after falling victim to a fraudulent haj package scam, which saw them stranded and denied entry into Makkah. Syarifah, a 57-year-old retiree from Batu Pahat, Johor, was among 47 pilgrims affected. She had hoped to perform the haj with her sister and brother-in-law, but their journey was cut short when they were barred from entering Makkah for not possessing official haj visas. 'We were unaware that we were using tourist visas. I advise others to be extremely careful and verify the credentials of any individual or agency offering haj packages—even if they are close friends,' she told reporters when met in Mantin today. She admitted that they failed to properly check the agency's background and had relied on word-of-mouth recommendations. 'We should have verified everything thoroughly with the proper authorities,' she said. Syarifah also revealed that she lost her entire Employees Provident Fund (EPF) savings to the scam. Despite this, she remains hopeful that one day she will have the opportunity to perform the haj through an official channel like Tabung Haji. Another victim, Said, 62, recalled the harrowing moments in Jeddah where the group was forced to trek through rough desert terrain in the dark without any guide or mutawwif. 'It felt like we were hiking. We were left to find our way with only the help of some locals. I never imagined I would have the strength to climb up and down those steep sandy hills,' he said. Said, who returned safely with his 63-year-old wife Nora, urged the public to only use licenced and Tabung Haji-recognised travel agencies for their pilgrimage. Previously, media reported that 47 Malaysians claimed to have been scammed by a local haj agent allegedly linked to a well-known religious figure. The three victims suffered a combined financial loss of RM81,000.
