Maruti Suzuki has inaugurated two Automated Driving Test Tracks (ADTTs) in Uttarakhand. These ADTTs are situated in Haridwar and Rishikesh. With this, the total number of ADTTs by Maruti in Uttarakhand rises up to three. Both these new ADTTs will cater to driving license testing for Light Motor Vehicle (LMV) and 2-wheelers.
In addition to automation of these two ADTTs, Maruti Suzuki operates an ADTT in Dehradun, since 2019. This facility won accolades from the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Uttarakhand for Excellence and Good Governance in 2019-2020. ADTTs are equipped with high-definition cameras and integrated IT systems to conduct driving license evaluations without human intervention.

This technology ensures a more comprehensive, efficient, and transparent testing process for driving license seekers. Evaluation at ADTTs is done in line with the Central Motor Vehicle Rules (CMVR). Maruti Suzuki stated that due to the automated testing process, an initial decline is usually observed in the pass percentage of driving license seekers at ADTTs.
This is followed by a gradual increase in pass rate, as the applicants come better prepared, ensuring only skilled drivers receive a license. In case of Dehradun ADTT, the pass percentage declined to 60 per cent in FY 2019-20, which has progressively improved to 69 per cent. Brijesh Kumar Sant (IAS), Secretary Transport, Uttarakhand Government, stated that with the comprehensive evaluation at ADTTs, it can be ensured that only skilled drivers get a driving license.

The ADTTs evaluate candidates through various tests such as reverse parallel parking, 8-formation, overtaking test, traffic junction test, gradient test for four-wheelers, and a serpentine track test for two-wheelers to assess vehicle-handling and control skills. Additionally, applicants undergo an emergency brake test and ramp test.
Maruti Suzuki India has been actively promoting road safety for over two decades, focusing on the five pillars of road safety: engineering, education, evaluation, enforcement, and emergency care.

Maruti Suzuki e Vitara Snapped Testing Again, What We Know So Far?

Maruti Suzuki is gearing up for the launch of the e Vitara in India. The electric car made its debut in Milan, followed by the Bharat Mobility Global Expo in January, and has been revealed globally. Recently, Suzuki launched the all-electric e Vitara in the United Kingdom with a price tag of Euro 29,999 (around Rs 35 lakh) for the entry-level variant with a 49 kWh battery pack. Meanwhile, the top-end variant of the EV with Ultra AllGrip-e variant with a 61 kWh battery pack and all-wheel-drive powertrain comes at Euro 37,799 (approximately Rs 44 lakh). Also, a test mule of the all-electric car has been spotted testing in India, suggesting its launch to be slotted soon. Talking about its exterior and design, the e Vitara takes cues from the eVX concept, with the amalgam of the Emotional Versatile Cruiser concept. The front fascia is rather upright, and it looks SUV-ish in all regards. The use of blacked-out elements around the chin offers a rugged appeal to the nose. Around the sides, it gets black cladding for the hexagonal wheel arches. The roof profile is flat for the large part. The chunky flared arches add muscles to the design. The charging port is fixed on the front fender, and the bonnet here is a clamshell unit. Other highlights include a shark-fin antenna and c-pillar-mounted door handles. The Indian spec Suzuki E Vitara will come with two battery pack options: 49 kWh and 61 kWh (as offered in the UK). The smaller battery pack will offer a WLTP range of 346 km, while the bigger battery pack is rated to offer 428 km of range in its single-motor configuration. Meanwhile, the dual-motor variant with the 61 kWh battery pack will offer 412 km of range.

Up front, a unique honeycomb grille features the full Suzuki script instead of the usual "S" badge, adding to its classic appeal. Maruti, Kia to Hyundai – why automakers are turning to trains to transport cars

This line is part of the first phase of the Haryana Orbital Rail Corridor (HORC) , which will connect Palwal to Sonipat via Manesar while bypassing the capital. And Maruti-Suzuki will have a 13 per cent stake in this with an estimated investment of Rs 325 crore in the orbital corridor. The plan isn't just to move 4.5 lakh vehicles annually – manufactured at the Gurugram and Manesar plants – to over 17 major railway hubs and the Pipavav and Mundra ports. It is also to eventually connect Maruti's new plant at Kharkhoda to the line, which should be opened in the next four to five years. Not because car sales are slipping, but because more and more cars are being transported via trains. A few days ago, the country's largest carmaker, Maruti-Suzuki, opened a massive railway siding inside its Manesar factory, which will transport vehicles from this plant to the rest of India. This 46-acre siding connects the Manesar factory to the Delhi-Mumbai main line and, crucially, the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor. The company spent Rs 127 crore specifically on the development of this yard. If you drive on expressways and highways frequently, one common sight is long box-shaped trucks, often with a car company logo on the side. Of course, these are car transporters, doing what the name suggests – transporting automobiles from factories to yards in various parts of the country. But I have to admit that these days, I see fewer and fewer of them on the roads. Also read: Has India lost the EV race? Sales figures say so Car transport via trains Maruti-Suzuki has been using the railways to transport cars since 2014-15, sending over 2.5 million vehicles via trains. Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director, Maruti-Suzuki, said that the company aims to transport over 35 per cent of its cars through rail by 2030-31. This would not only reduce road congestion but would play a major role in reducing carbon emissions, he stressed. Maruti-Suzuki isn't the only one capitalising on the speed and reliability of railways. As the country's largest carmaker actively invests in HORC, others are innovating too. Kia India, which uses a railway siding a few kilometres from its plant in Andhra Pradesh's Anantapur, launched a double-decker freight train that can easily transport its tall SUVs. As the company's March press release stated, each train can carry 264 vehicles – 'more than two-and-a-half times the capacity of a standard train, which typically carries 100 cars.' But it is Hyundai India that seems to be the most enthusiastic about rail transportation. The automaker transported 1,56,724 vehicles by railways in 2024, which was 26 per cent of its domestic wholesale volume. Hyundai's Tarun Garg had earlier mentioned that the Indian Railways is also profiting from this boom in rail logistics. The Pune division of the railways recorded a 143 per cent gain in revenues from automobile transportation, after ferrying cars manufactured by Mahindra, Skoda-Volkswagen, and Tata Motors in the Chakan area. Overall, railway officials estimate that 20 per cent of the cars manufactured in India travel much of their journey to new owners on steel wheels. A Business Standard report said that the number of rakes used for automobile transport increased by nine per cent in the financial year 2024-25. This led to a five per cent increase in freight revenue, to Rs 973 crore. It's ironic that automobile companies are going to the railways, ostensibly for reducing carbon emissions, because at the end of the day, cars are not what one would describe as environmentally friendly. However, increased rail usage is a good thing in terms of decongesting the roads. And, thanks to intensive electrification, sending automobiles via rakes is turning out to be more efficient and cost-effective. Kushan Mitra is an automotive journalist based in New Delhi.
