IJM Land marks milestone with completion of rehabilitated homes
IJM Land Bhd proudly commemorates the 15th anniversary of its flagship Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative – 'MyHome' programme – with the successful completion and handover of two newly rehabilitated homes, in Seremban, Negri Sembilan and in Sandakan, Sabah.
One was built for Wong See Kong, an 82-year-old father residing in Sandakan with his two unmarried children.
The other was for Chan Ngan Chong, a 61-year-old man with a family of four, whose old home in Kampung Baru Batu 8, Labu, was fully rebuilt and handed over in Seremban.
Initiated in 2010, IJM Land's My Home programme was initiated to uplift underprivileged and disadvantaged households across Malaysia. Over the span of 15 years, this initiative has significantly impacted 23 families.
Restoring hope in Seremban
Before the renovation, the original house was in a dire state of disrepair – deemed uninhabitable and teetering on the brink of collapse within a year.
The family was surviving on a minimal income, forced to live in unsafe conditions marked by severe termite damage, a broken and unusable kitchen, and just one functional bedroom for Chan's family of four.
At the age of 61, Chan faced more than just structural challenges. A debilitating stroke three years prior had left him unemployed and dependent on his wife, who had to leave her job as a dish cleaner to become his full-time caregiver.
Chan's home in Seremban was once in a heartbreaking state of disrepair (above). But after a thoughtful renovation (below), it now offers his family a fresh and hopeful new beginning.
The family faced mounting financial pressures, including over RM4,000 in unpaid electricity bills –an amount that IJM Land stepped in to clear.
In the spirit of making a meaningful difference, the IJM Land MyHome Programme brought renewed hope and a fresh start to the lives of Chan, and his wife, Puniamah, 60.
Due to the severe condition of the house, IJM Land and its partners undertook a complete rebuild in addition to enhancing the surrounding spaces. The new home included:
> Three bedrooms (expanded from the original two-bedroom layout)
> A toilet and bathroom
> A functional kitchen, and an extended living and dining area
The extensive improvements have brought meaningful change to their lives, offering comfort, security for their family and a renewed sense of peace within their living space.
IJM Land further supported them by providing essential furniture and electrical appliances to furnish their new home.
A home reborn in Sandakan
Before the intervention, the family faced numerous challenges living in a dilapidated single-storey house.
The home had a leaking roof, unstable kitchen structures, mouldy ceilings, exposed electrical wiring, and no access to clean water. Hygiene and safety were significant concerns, especially for Wong's advanced age.
Living on a modest income of RM1,500 a month, earned by his 53-year-old daughter working at a grocery store, the family struggled to maintain their home.
Through the MyHome Programme, IJM Land and its partners completed extensive repairs and renovations including:
> Reconstructing the kitchen with safe, durable materials
> Replacing mouldy ceilings and repainting interiors and exteriors
> Installing a proper water supply system and a new metal stove
> Upgrading unsafe electrical wiring
> Applying concrete flooring and cleaning the house interior
> Installing a secure fence and gate for improved safety
Today, the house stands as a safe, clean, and dignified space for Wong and his family. The improvements have greatly enhanced their standard of living, rendering the home more secure for the elderly and far more comfortable for their daily needs.
Rebuilding lives across Malaysia
"The MyHome Programme is more than a CSR initiative – it's our way of giving back to the communities that have helped us grow,' said IJM Land chief operating officer Datuk Chai Kian Soon.
'At IJM Land, we believe that making a real difference starts with understanding what families truly need — a safe, secure place to call home.
'Through the MyHome Programme, we focus on doing what we know best: building and restoring homes, one family at a time.
'Over the past 15 years, we've had the privilege of helping more than 20 families rebuild their lives, and with the support of our partners, we hope to continue reaching more communities in the places we call home,' he added.
The programme, which began in Seremban 2, continues to serve as a model for community upliftment across all the regions that IJM Land operates in, including Northern Penang, Central region, Southern Johor, Sabah, and Sarawak.
By engaging subcontractors, suppliers, and local partners, IJM Land fosters a collaborative effort to provide conducive living spaces that uphold dignity and enhance the quality of life for families.
'As we continue to scale up the programme, our goal is to ensure that more Malaysian families can live, play, and study in homes that are not just safe – but truly nurturing,' added Chai.

Jumbo rampage destroys crops
Compiled by FAZLEENA AZIZ, TAN SIN CHOW AND R. ARAVINTHAN A HERD of wild elephants has wreaked havoc on a coconut plantation in Johor, destroying 6,000 trees and causing estimated losses of RM1.8mil over the past nine months, Kosmo! reported. The intrusions, which began in October last year, have devastated the Sedili Kechil Food Production Zone in Kota Tinggi involving crops cultivated by 32 entrepreneurs and six farming organisations. Pengerang Area Farmers' Organisation managing director Mohamad Azhar Din said 6,171 coconut trees were damaged. 'These elephants are believed to roam in small groups of three to five and typically strike during the night until dawn,' he said, adding that the most recent incidents on June 16 and 17 destroyed 380 trees and caused RM90,000 in losses. 'Those trees were planted in late 2023 and expected to begin bearing fruit by the end of next year.' He said numerous mitigation efforts had been implemented, including building fences and drainage systems and conducting patrols, as recommended by the Wildlife and National Parks Department. He warned that continued attacks by the elephants could undermine the state government's agrofood development. Previously, the plantation had only faced threats from monkeys, wild boars and rats. > Popular entertainer Nabil Ahmad has touched hearts online with his plan to transform his family home in Mambau, Negri Sembilan, into a madrasah. The multi-talented 42-year-old, whose full name is Ahmad Nabil Ahmad, shared on social media that the dream is close to becoming a reality. 'My mother had expressed her desire for our family home to become a madrasah for religious learning and events. 'She also hoped it could provide a source of income for our family as the land is ours,' he told Berita Harian. He said renovations are slated to start early next year, with the existing home to be demolished in order to make way for a small mosque. 'I also plan to build a tahfiz and provide accommodation for students and the ustaz. For starters, we will accept only male students and offer free Quran classes,' he said. Nabil added that he would consult the Negri Sembilan Islamic Religious Council on the process of land endowment and official establishment of the madrasah. Ampang Jaya pocket park to benefit six neighbourhoods
The new recreational park in Taman Cahaya features a children's playset and jogging track. A NEW recreational park in Taman Cahaya, Ampang Jaya in Selangor, has received approval from its surrounding community. The park on Jalan Cahaya 12 was constructed by Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) with a RM500,000 Housing and Local Government Ministry allocation. A resident of the nearby Bella Vista apartments, KC Tan, said it was a good decision to have a park just next to the property. 'There aren't many open spaces where people can gather and relax in this area, so this park is a welcomed addition,' said Tan who has lived in Bella Vista for over a decade. The new park features a children's playset and jogging track. A Taman Cahaya resident, who only wanted to be known as Sabariah, said while she welcomed the park, more seating was needed. 'There is plenty of open space and walking paths, but not enough places to sit, especially for senior citizens like me.' Sabariah, who has been visiting the park daily with her grandchildren since it opened, said benches and shaded seating would make it more comfortable and accessible to all age groups. MPAJ Zone 8 councillor Datuk Yap Wee Seng said residents from at least six neighbourhoods could enjoy the park facilities. They include Taman Cahaya, Taman Dagang, Taman Cahaya Indah, Taman Cempaka, Taman Nirwana and Kampung Baru Ampang. 'There is a lack of public parks in these mature areas. 'Finding spaces where a new green space could be built was difficult,' said Yap. 'This site used to be idle land as it was also near high-tension cables,' he said, recalling that residents had suggested it be turned into a park. He said MPAJ managed to complete construction of the almost 1ha park in six months. 'Hopefully, we will be able to identify more spaces that can be turned into pocket parks,' he added. In a media statement, MPAJ said the construction of the park was part of its ongoing efforts to enhance community infrastructure and improve access to recreational and leisure facilities within its jurisdiction. It also reaffirmed its commitment to providing comfortable, community friendly public spaces that promoted a healthy lifestyle for all. Bukit Antarabangsa assemblyman Mohd Kamri Kamaruddin, who is also Selangor Deputy Speaker, MPAJ deputy president Hasrolnizam Shaari and Youth, Community and Landscape Department director Mohamad Yusuf Sulaiman visited the park.

Kpg Rayu Iban to get Community Fire Unit, KRT for safety and unity
Fatimah says the initiative to set up the Community Fire Unit is crucial as the nearest fire station is located far from the village, which poses difficulties to rapid response in the event of a fire. KUCHING (June 18): A Community Fire Unit and neighborhood watch area (KRT) will be established in Kampung Rayu Iban, Lundu as part of efforts to strengthen safety and promote community unity, said Sarawak Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister, Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah. She said the initiative to set up the Community Fire Unit is crucial as the nearest fire station is located far from the village, which poses difficulties to rapid response in the event of a fire. 'This matter has been discussed in previous meetings, and today I was informed that the Fire and Rescue Department will work with the village chief to make the Community Fire Unit in Kampung Rayu a reality,' she said during the closing ceremony of the KPWK Gawai Dayak and Raya Outreach programme with strategic partners at the Kampung Rayu Iban longhouse in Lundu today. Fatimah added that the establishment of the unit is critical, as longhouses are at high risk of fire due to their connected structures, where one door links to the next. 'If one unit catches fire, the entire longhouse could be destroyed in the blink of an eye. 'That is why the community must be trained and prepared to act as the first responders while waiting for the fire brigade to arrive,' she said. She also noted that the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) had given a fire prevention briefing to residents as an initial step to raise awareness and enhance community preparedness. In addition, Fatimah said the Department of National Unity and Integration has been requested to look into the formation of a KRT in the village. 'I was informed this morning that efforts to set up the KRT can begin and be further discussed in detail. This is important for implementing unity and safety programmes in an organised manner,' she said. She explained that officially registered KRTs would receive an annual allocation of RM6,000 to carry out various community programmes. 'This not only strengthens unity but also opens up opportunities for structured grassroots social development activities,' she added. Meanwhile, more than 1,000 residents of Kampung Rayu Iban longhouse benefited from the two-day KPWK Gawai Dayak and Raya Outreach programme, which was carried out in collaboration with strategic partners. The programme aimed to bring government services and information directly to rural communities, especially those with limited access or awareness. Among the services offered were applications for aid schemes, free health screenings, entrepreneurship and leadership seminars, and advisory counters from various government agencies. Fatimah said the initiative reflects the Sarawak government's commitment to inclusivity under the leadership of Sarawak Premier, ensuring no one is left behind in the state's development. Also present were Deputy State Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister, Datuk Mohammad Razi Sitam; the ministry's Permanent Secretary Datu Felicia Tan Ya Hua; Tanjong Datu assemblyman Azizul Annuar Adenan; and Lingga assemblywoman Dayang Noorazah Awang Sohor.
