Sabah gears up for grand 74th official birthday celebration of TYT

KOTA KINABALU (May 26): Seven main events have been lined up to enliven the 74th official birthday celebration of Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sabah, Tun Musa Aman, this June.
Deputy Chief Minister II cum Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam said meticulous preparations have been underway since early February by the main and implementing committees to ensure smooth execution.
'This celebration is an annual state event, not only to honour His Excellency but also to showcase unity and love for the state among the people,' he said at a special press conference held at the Ministry of Communications integrated complex in Kepayan today.
As chairman of the main committee, Joachim expressed pride in the commitment shown by all parties involved.
'We want this event to be more than symbolic — we want the people to genuinely feel its significance,' he said.
Among the key events is a grand parade at Padang Merdeka, featuring over 80 contingents from government departments, private agencies, NGOs, higher education institutions and students. This broad participation reflects the unity and patriotism of Sabahans towards their state leadership.
A full dress rehearsal will be held a few days prior, with Joachim personally attending to assess preparations.
'I will be present during the rehearsal to ensure every detail is perfect,' he said.
Another key component is a special media conference — now an official event — to enhance communication between the organising committee and the media. Joachim emphasised the role of the media in effectively conveying information and supporting government programmes.
Other highlights include a state banquet and meet-and-greet session uniting state leaders, diplomats, department heads, and community representatives. This event serves to honour contributions made toward Sabah's development and stability.
The fifth event is a religious programme focused on spiritual reflection and prayers for the well-being of TYT, his consort, and family. Joachim noted its importance in promoting harmony across Sabah's multicultural society.
Starting in early June, local authorities will also install birthday billboards across districts, fostering a festive atmosphere and demonstrating local support for TYT's leadership.
The final major event will showcase community and cultural activities, such as traditional performances, folk entertainment, and interactive programmes to reinforce state pride and cultural identity.
Joachim invited all Sabahans to gather at Padang Merdeka in June, starting as early as 6am, to witness the main celebration.
'I call on everyone, regardless of background, to join in this celebration as a sign of respect and love for our state leader,' he said.
He also urged the public to pray for the TYT's continued health and well-being, praising his caring and people-centric leadership as a model for all.
Also present at the press conference were KKTP permanent secretary Datuk Dr Jamili Nais, TYT's private secretary Izharudin Jalaludin, Sabah Broadcasting director Mohd Yusni Mohamed Ali, and Sabah Information director Jainisah Mohd Noor.

Sabar Chairman Datuk Zainie Abdul Aucasa expressed pride in presenting a document of aspirations and actions derived from four months of listening to the people. He said the policy document will be submitted to all parties contesting the coming state election, in the expectation that the proposals would be adopted in their manifestos and more importantly, implemented after the polls. 'We don't want to see a repeat of past promises that were abandoned after elections. This initiative is about building a new political culture that instills responsibility and follows through,' he said. Looking ahead, Zainie revealed that Sabar would shift focus toward engaging young Sabahans in the next phase of their work. 'They must know how to pick representatives who genuinely deliver on their promises. That's how we build a better Sabah, one election at a time,' he said. SAPP Women's Youth Wing Chief, Yvonne Yong Yit Phung, hailed the initiative as a much-needed departure from the typical political echo chamber, calling for more youth to step forward and help shape Sabah's future. Yvonne praised the organisers for encouraging proactive dialogue and engaging youth in meaningful policy discussions. 'The way questions were framed, how discussions were guided, it was very professional. It showed how much the youth care, and how much potential they have if given the platform,' she said. Vice President of Borneo History, Sahar Piasin, 65, welcomed the shift in focus at the final town hall, noting a refreshing change from previous events. 'Unlike before, which mostly centred around MA63, this time the emphasis was more on youth development through education, rural empowerment, and infrastructure. That made it very interesting,' he said. Sahar noted that speakers appeared to deliberately target students and young people, which, in turn, deserves the attention of Sabahan parents. 'They weren't just asking for opportunities, they were being spoken to directly about the future of their children. That made a real impact,' he added. Sabar launches 117-point report from public consultations

KOTA KINABALU: More than 300 stakeholders gathered at Wisma Wanita for the final town hall of 'Sabah Voices to Action,' where Sabah Action Body Advocating Rights (Sabar) officially launched a 60-page policy report outlining 117 public demands ahead of the 2025 Sabah state election. The report, compiled through a three-month consultation across Sabah, covers 21 areas including education, healthcare, infrastructure, and governance, and is accessible online in three languages. Sabar chairman Datuk Zainie Abdul Aucasa urged politicians to take the document seriously, calling it a grassroots effort that reflects the real concerns of Sabahans and a foundation for collaborative reform. Key proposals include the creation of Sabah-led education and health ministries, decentralised infrastructure planning, and sweeping reforms in governance, such as political financing laws and transparent tenders.
