Springbok Women survive late rally from Kenya to maintain unbeaten run at Rugby Africa Cup

The Star11-06-2025

The Springbok Women's poor ball retention almost came back to bite them as they survived a late onslaught to hold off the Kenya Lionesses 19-12 in their Rugby Africa Women 's Cup clash at the Stade Makis in Antananarivo, Madagascar on Wednesday.
The South Africans – who thrashed Uganda 62-7 in their tournament opener – were dominant in the opening 40 minutes, but could only muster 12 points from two tries and a conversion.
The Bok Women, who are using the tournament as preparation for the World Cup in September, got stuck into the Kenyans from the start.
The forwards, with the likes of tighthead prop Nombuyekezo Mdliki, captain and lock Anathi Qolo and hooker Luchell Hanekom prominent, made serious inroads on attack with their strong carries, and they were backed up by backs such as wing Patience Mokone and fullback Byrhandr é Dolf.
But the Bok Women battled to finish off a number of attacking moves, with their handling letting them down as they either lost possession or conceded breakdown turnover or penalty at crucial times inside the Kenyan 22.
That trend continued in the second half, and despite enjoying a healthy advantage in the scrums and playing with great physicality, SA were met with courageous defence by the determined Kenyans.
The Bok Women started off well enough, with powerful centre Aphiwe Ngwevu charging over from close range after a clever inside pass from flyhalf Mary Zulu.
But the South Africans had to wait until the 35th minute to add to their tally, when red-haired wing Mokone's dazzling run was finished off by flank Lerato Makua.
The defending champions never looked in any danger of losing the game despite their frustrating time on attack, and replacement loose forward Nobuhle Mjwara's touchdown with less than 15 minutes to go seemed to seal the victory.
But Kenya never gave up, and two late tries led to a thrilling finish.
Wing Freshia Awino got the East Africans on the scoreboard with good pace down the left flank, and a few minutes later, replacement prop Noleen Khaleyi dived over after a stunning counter-attack from inside their own half.
Suddenly it was 19-12 with five minutes to go, and the South Africans looked like they had lost their grip on the encounter.

SAFA plots path for national teams after All-Night NEC Meeting

Safa president Danny Jordaan Image: Itumeleng English/Independent Newspapers With a packed international calendar looming, the South African Football Association (SAFA) spent nearly 15 hours in a marathon National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting this past weekend to map out preparations for the country's various national teams. Banyana Banyana are set to compete at the Women's Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco in July, while the SA U17 and U20 men's teams are preparing for their respective FIFA World Cups in Qatar and Chile later this year. Bafana Bafana, meanwhile, have four crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers lined up between September and October. SAFA President Dr Danny Jordaan confirmed that the NEC meeting, held at SAFA House in Johannesburg on Friday, started at 2pm and only concluded at 5am on Saturday morning. 'We had several matters to deal with. You know, Banyana Banyana is going to Morocco. The U17s are going to Qatar in November, and the U20s are heading to Chile in September. Then we also have Bafana's World Cup qualifiers,' said Jordaan. The marathon session also addressed various administrative matters, but not all items on the agenda were concluded. The NEC has been adjourned to reconvene next week ahead of the upcoming SAFA Congress. 'We are going to appoint new auditors, and we have the Finance and Technical Committee reports to be presented. These are Committee reports that we've left for next week,' Jordaan added. Among the matters deferred to the next sitting are updates from the Competitions and Membership Affairs Committees, as well as appointments to the Technical Committee—an area Jordaan stressed is key to ensuring national teams are adequately prepared. 'There are too many issues that we had to deal with. But, as you could see, all the people remained until the end of the meeting. We have to make sure everything is okay with our teams, and that's where the focus is,' he said. Jordaan, who will travel to the United States this weekend for engagements, also hopes to catch a few matches at the FIFA Club World Cup, where South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns are competing.

Wanderers runner completes emotional 10th Comrades in memory of his father

When Conrad Walters, of Wanderers Club, crossed the Comrades Marathon finish line on June 8, it was not just the end of a race; it was the closing of a deeply personal chapter. This was his 10th Comrades, a milestone he had worked towards for years, but one he almost missed entirely. Read more: Watch: Comrades Marathon hero helps collapsed runner finish race Earlier this year, Walters lost both his father and uncle within days of each other. The grief was heavy. Training fell away. Motivation faded. But one thing stayed with him. He had to run this one for his dad. 'I knew I wasn't in my best shape. I had not trained the way I usually do, but I could not sit this one out,' he said. It was his slowest run to date and, without question, his hardest. He battled stomach issues, muscle cramps, and moments of doubt, but he kept going. 'This was the run I am most proud of,' Walters said. 'It was not about speed; it was about heart.' Having first run Comrades in 2013, he had intended to reach his 10th race in 2023. A severe asthma attack put that on hold, but he returned in 2025, with more grit than preparation, finishing with more emotion than ever before. For Walters, Comrades is not only about the elite runners at the front. It lives in the determination of everyday South Africans who strive to balance work, family, and daily life. It is in the kindness of strangers offering water, food, and cheers along the route, and it is in the unwavering support of those waiting at the finish line.'Sometimes,' he said, 'just getting to the start is the bravest thing you can do.' Confirmed: PSL club sell winger to Orlando Pirates

Orlando Pirates will allocate a new parking spot for Tshepang Moremi at the Rand Stadium before the new Betway Premiership season. A deal to sign Tshepang Moremi from AmaZulu is done and dusted. It was made possible by the Sharpville-born player's three goals and seven assists in 28 matches during the 2024/25 season. His club AmaZulu, affectionately called Usuthu, have confirmed that the speedy winger will wear the famous black and white colours next term. Reports: Orlando Pirates name selling price for Mofokeng 'AmaZulu FC can also confirm that an offer from Orlando Pirates FC to acquire the rights to midfielder Tshepang Moremi has been accepted,' the club announced in a statement. 'We wish Tshepang all the best as he embarks on a new chapter in his career,' the note added. DID YOU KNOW? Moremi, who hails from the same town as Relebohile Mofokeng, is the only AmaZulu footballer who played in each and every single Betway Premiership match for Usuthu last season.
