River Island to close 33 sites with hundreds of jobs at risk

The fashion retailer has unveiled a radical restructuring plan in a bid to reverse recent heavy losses due to a slump in trading.
Bosses blamed the closures on the 'migration of shoppers from the high street to online' and higher costs to run stores.
The family-owned retailer confirmed it is proposing to close 33 of its 230 stores by January next year as a result.
A further 71 stores are also at risk, depending on talks with landlords in order to secure improved rental deals.
The retailer, which employs around 5,500 people, was founded in 1948 under the Lewis and Chelsea Girl brand before being renamed in the 1980s.
It has reportedly hired advisers from PwC in order to oversee the restructuring process.
The proposals are set to go to a vote by the firm's creditors – companies or individuals owed money by the retailer – in August.
The deal will result in fresh funding being invested in the business to help fuel its turnaround.

Ben Lewis, chief executive of River Island, said: 'River Island is a much-loved retailer, with a decades-long history on the British high street.
'However, the well-documented migration of shoppers from the high street to online has left the business with a large portfolio of stores that is no longer aligned to our customers' needs.
'The sharp rise in the cost of doing business over the last few years has only added to the financial burden.
'We have a clear strategy to transform the business to ensure its long-term viability.
'Recent improvements in our fashion offer and in-store shopping experience are already showing very positive results, but it is only with a restructuring plan that we will be able to see this strategy through and secure River Island's future as a profitable retail business.

The retailer is among high street fashion chains to have been impacted by weaker consumer spending and competition from cheaper online rivals, such as Shein.
River Island fell to a £33.2 million loss in 2023 after sales slid by 19%, according to its most recent set of accounts.

The Premier League champions have paid Bayer Leverkusen £100million for the 22-year-old Germany international but that fee could potentially become a British record as there are £16m of add-ons included. If achieved that would surpass the existing mark of £115m which Chelsea paid for Moises Caicedo in 2023 and it is understood Liverpool will be happy to pay these 'aspirational bonuses' as it will mean they have enjoyed considerable success at elite level. And that is what Wirtz, one of Europe's hottest properties, is determined to contribute to. 'I'm not coming (to) have fun here, I want also to achieve something and give the fans what they deserve,' he told the club's website. 'Of course I want to keep going at this performance. So yeah, that sure gives motivation to achieve more. 'I would like to win everything every year. First of all, we have to do our work, I have to make my work. In the end, we want to be successful. 'Last season they won the Premier League, so my goal is for sure to win it again and also to go further in the Champions League. I'm really ambitious.' Wirtz has signed a five-year deal and at 22 has his best years ahead of him. He wants to continue the progress which saw him score 57 goals and contribute 64 assists in 197 appearances for Leverkusen. 'This was also a big point for me: that I will improve my own personal level and physical levels because I think everyone knows that in Liverpool the players are machines – really strong and really physical,' he added. 'But I see this also as an opportunity for me to get better in this point. So yeah, I just thought this was the right place for me.' Liverpool saw off competition from Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid to secure Wirtz. Leverkusen had valued him at £126m but a compromise was reached last week, although the up-front fee easily outstrips the £85m deal Liverpool agreed with Benfica in 2022 for Darwin Nunez, who is expected to leave this summer. 'I'm really excited to have a new adventure in front of me. Swansea University achieved its highest ever score in the prestigious QS list while Cardiff climbed five places. They buck the trend with most of the UK universities listed dropping down the ranks. The best UK university was named as Imperial College London which kept its place as second best on the planet after Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US. Of the 90 British universities on the score sheet 54 fell. Edinburgh plunged seven places to 34th, and the London School of Economics and Political Science, dropped from 50 to 56. ‌ After a tough year with deep cuts and job losses Cardiff University was ranked 181 on the list, up five places compared to last year and 26th best in the UK, although not its best ever QS score. ‌ Swansea University at 292 achieved its best ever ranking on the list and is up one place on last year. A Swansea University spokesperson said: "This marks consistent growth over the past five years, with Swansea advancing 182 places since 2021, when it was ranked 474th. Cardiff achieved an overall point score of 57.8 while Swansea had a 46.2 score for these. Swansea said its success in the latest score was driven by strong performances in international students, sustainability and employer and academic reputation. ‌ Cardiff said it saw improvement in areas including international research network, faculty student ratio and employment outcomes. Professor Paul Boyle, vice-chancellor of Swansea University, said: 'This year's QS ranking is a clear reflection of Swansea University's growing global reputation and a testament to the excellence and outstanding dedication of our staff. Rising to 292nd place and maintaining a position in the world's top 300 for the second consecutive year is a significant achievement, of which we are justifiably proud. 'This accomplishment underscores the strength of our academic reputation, the diversity of our international community and our growing impact in key areas such as sustainability. I extend my sincere thanks to everyone across our university community whose collective commitment has made this success possible over successive years.' ‌ Vice-Chancellor, Professor Wendy Larner said: 'It's really encouraging to see Cardiff rise in the QS World Rankings. It reflects the dedication and expertise of the entire University community.' Of the other Welsh universities Bangor was placed 566 with an overall score of 29.3 and Aberysywyth ranked between 741 and 750th place and with no overall score recorded. The University of South Wales, Cardiff Metropolitan University, Wrexham and the University of Wales Trinity St David were not on the list. ‌ Across the top UK instutions Oxford and Cambridge both fell one place each to rank fourth and sixth respectively, Bristol University climbed three places to 51 with an overall score of 82.5, Birmingam was 76th place with an overall score of 73.8, Exeter was ranked 155 on the list and the University of the West of England (UWE) was ranked at between 721 and 730th place.
