Mussoorie: The iconic Mall Road in Mussoorie, known for its scenic charm and leisurely evening strolls, is losing its appeal due to rampant encroachments by street vendors, unregulated traffic, and haphazard vehicle parking — particularly of two-wheelers.
Residents say the stretch from Gandhi Chowk to Picture Palace has been overtaken by street vendors and food stalls.
"Every vantage point has been captured by vendors. The entire road is heavily encroached, especially near Hotel Mayur, Garhwal Terrace, Jhoola Ghar, the LIC building, and Picture Palace," said Nidhi Bahuguna, a local resident.
Locals also allege that several eateries are openly dumping garbage on the roadside, worsening the problem.
Unregulated movement of vehicles, especially during evening hours — a time reserved for pedestrians — is also a cause of concern for residents.
"As per by-laws of Mussoorie Municipal Council (MMC), no vehicles are allowed on the Mall Road between 5pm and 10.30pm, but vehicles are moving freely during these hours. Over the past few months, there have been several instances of tourists and residents being hit by moving vehicles," said Shalabh Garg, another resident.
Residents say that Mall Road was frequented by tourists and locals for evening walks. "But now, with constant traffic and noise, no one wants to walk there anymore. The charm of this historic road is fading," Garg added.
Locals say haphazard parking of two-wheelers across the Mall has further exacerbated the issue.
Speaking to TOI on what can be done, MMC executive officer Tanveer Marwah said that steps are being taken to address the issue. "Restrictions on vehicular entry have been imposed over the past week, but two-wheelers are sneaking in through Hampton Court Road and Barahkainchi Road. We are seeking police support to block these two points," he said.
"We have started regular anti-encroachment drives and efforts are on to ensure only verified vendors are permitted on the Mall Road," Marwah added.

"Pahalgam Bustling With Activity": Omar Abdullah On Tourism Revival

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday said the efforts put in by him and his colleagues for the revival of tourism in Kashmir are bearing fruit, as tourists are returning to the Valley. 'The last time I was in Pahalgam, I cycled through a market that was all but deserted. Today, I came back to a Pahalgam that was bustling with activity. 'Tourists from various parts of the country competed for space with local picnickers who were enjoying the cool climate and rainy weather," Mr Abdullah said in a post on X, expressing satisfaction over the revival of tourism in Pahalgam. Tourism in Pahalgam was badly hit after the April 22 terror attack at the Baisaran meadow, which killed 25 tourists and a local pony ride operator. "It's very satisfying to see the efforts my colleagues and I have been putting in slowly bearing fruit," Mr Abdullah said.

Taking to X, CM Dhami announced that in a span of just 48 days, more than 11.4 lakh devotees have paid their respects at the revered Kedarnath shrine.' Describing the pilgrimage as 'a wonderful confluence of development with faith,' the Chief Minister said the surge in footfall has not only strengthened Uttarakhand's spiritual landscape but also significantly boosted its local economy. 'This is not just a pilgrimage but has become a symbol of Uttarakhand's economic, cultural and spiritual prosperity. Hail Baba Kedar!' he said, sharing updates using the hashtag #CharDhamYatra2025. The annual Char Dham Yatra, which includes pilgrimages to Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri, is one of the most significant religious journeys in Hinduism. The state government has undertaken a series of infrastructure upgrades in recent years--including improved roads, helicopter services, and better accommodation--to ensure a safer and smoother pilgrimage experience for devotees. This year, the Kedarnath Dham has seen an unprecedented inflow of pilgrims, which officials attribute to both improved facilities and increasing spiritual interest. Authorities have also deployed enhanced security and medical response teams to manage the high-altitude yatra effectively. The Kedarnath temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is located at an altitude of over 11,000 feet in the Himalayas and holds immense religious significance. The Kedarnath Yatra doors for the year 2025 were opened for devotees on May 2. According to an official release, local hotels, restaurants, traders, and small businesses like horse-mule, heli, and dandi-kandi services collectively did business of about three billion. The local traders, women self-help groups, taxi operators, and people associated with any kind of business are getting full benefits of the pilgrimage, it added. Chief Veterinary Officer Dr Ashish Rawat said, 'Till June 18, 2,27,614 pilgrims have reached for darshan through horses and mules, which has generated an income of Rs 66 crore 73 lakh 90 thousand 350.'He also mentioned that this year, about 8,000 horses and mules are registered. Due to the infectious disease equine influenza virus, horse-mule operations were also affected for a few days. The heli services play a very important role in the Kedarnath Yatra, as they give devotees who are unable to walk to complete the Yatra an opportunity. This service also generates income. Emphasising this, District Tourism Officer and Nodal Heli Service official Rahul Chaubey said that this year eight heli companies are operating from nine helipads. Till June 18, 49,247 devotees have reached Baba Kedarnath Dham through heli services, which has generated an income of about Rs 60 crore, he added. Chaubey also appealed to devotees to book heli services only through the official website of operation of dandi-kandi, which is considered safer for small children, has also generated Rs 2 crore till June 18, the press release includes challans and fines of Rs 4,17,000 imposed on various establishments for spreading dirt and violating other rules, it added. Additional Chief Officer of District Panchayat Rudraprayag, Sanjay Kumar, also highlighted that more than 7,000 dandi-kandi operators are registered for this year's Yatra. Assistant Transport Officer of Rudraprayag, Kulwant Singh Chauhan, said that this year, 225 vehicles are registered for the shuttle service in the Shri Kedarnath Dham Yatra, the release mentioned. Till June 18, the taxi operators have earned around Rs 11 crore 40 thousand through the shuttle services. (ANI)

Sensing the approaching request, the user put on their headphones and looked away, hoping to avoid the inevitable. Minutes later, the woman was seen negotiating with a nearby couple to swap seats closer to her husband, but her efforts were politely declined. The request finally comes Eventually, the woman tapped the poster on the shoulder and made her move. 'Can you give me your seat?' she asked, citing nausea as her reason. The Redditor, well aware that the train windows were sealed and did not open, replied, 'This window doesn't open. It won't help you with nausea.' Unfazed, the woman insisted, 'Even then, I need it.' Standing firm, the user politely declined. 'Sorry, I can't,' they said, as the woman settled back into her middle seat with what was described as a 'luggage fortress'. Reflecting on the situation, the Redditor wrote, 'Some people really know how to play the 'nausea + woman + elder' sympathy card to get what they want.'
