Aaron-Wooi Yik capable of getting top spot
KUALA LUMPUR: A strong showing at the Japan and China Opens next month could lift national men's doubles pair Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik to the world No. 1 ranking and boost their seeding prospects at the world championships, said head coach Herry Iman Pierngadi.
He said clinching the world's top ranking could help the Olympic bronze medallists secure a better seeding at the world championships in Paris this August.
'Aaron and Wooi Yik are already ranked second in the world, which I think is good enough to help with their seeding at the world championships.
'But if they can become world No. 1 before then, why not? Of course, that would be even better,' he told reporters after a national team training session at Akademi Badminton Malaysia (ABM) here today.
Aaron-Wooi Yik are ranked second with 89,870 points, just 1,220 points behind their compatriots and professional pair Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani.
However, Herry said the world No. 1 ranking is not the top priority for Aaron-Wooi Yik, as it is more important to be well prepared for all tournaments.
Aaron-Wooi Yik are the first and only Malaysians to have won a world badminton title, achieving the feat in 2022 in Tokyo after defeating Indonesia's Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan.

Gymnastics-Chusovitina turns 50 and flies to silver in World Challenge Cup
(Reuters) -Uzbek gymnast Oksana Chusovitina celebrated her 50th birthday in remarkable fashion by winning silver in the vault at the Gymnastics World Challenge Cup in Tashkent on Friday. Bulgarian Valentina Georgieva, 18, beat the former Olympic and world champion to claim gold while Uzbeki compatriot Shakhinabonu Yusufova took third place. Chusovitina become the Soviet all-around champion at 13 and the world champion on floor in 1991. She won gold in the team event at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and silver in the vault in Beijing 16 years later when she had temporarily switched her allegiance to Germany. Rashid Sidek not in favour of 'longer tournaments'
KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Rashid Sidek feels that the idea of increasing Super 1000 tournaments from six days to 11 will not necessarily reduce the physical and mental stress of shuttlers. In fact, the former Olympic bronze medallist feels that the players will be saddled with more financial burden if BWF implements the format in 2027 as not all the top 15 singles and top 10 pairs enjoy lucrative sponsorships. Rashid said the current six-day competition format should be maintained if the world body is to safeguard player welfare. "I feel it's pointless to increase to 11 days because this will put more financial burden on the players. They have to fork out more for accomodation and food," said Rashid. "We have to remember that not all players get big sponsorships. The top eight in singles and doubles may enjoy financial security, but the rest will struggle. "Tennis grand slams are held for two weeks because they have over seven rounds and matches can last for five hours. "Let's not talk about the prize money because there is a huge difference between the Grand Slams and badminton's Super 1000 events." The Wimbledon, for example, offered a jaw-dropping £3 million (RM17.17m) for the men's singles champion this year while the men's singles winner of the China Open, a Super 1000 event, received US$140,000 (RM595,488). Rashid believes lengthy Super 1000 tournaments may satisfy fans, boost ticket sales and leading to more live coverage, but it will be a burden for the organisers as well. "The organising costs of Super 1000 events will also increase and some countries may find it harder to host big World Tour events. "However, increasing the prize money should help the players earn more, and they will not be tempted to play in too many events," added Rashid.
