Boca denied by two Argentines as Benfica fight back

Hindustan Times5 days ago

Goals from two Argentine internationals denied Boca Juniors victory over Benfica on Monday, as the Buenos Aires side were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw in a stormy Club World Cup Group C clash.
An Angel Di Maria penalty on the stroke of half-time and an 86th-minute header from Nicolas Otamendi earned the 10-man Lisbon side a point from a fiercely contested encounter in what was a de facto home game for Boca.
The Argentine club had led 2-0 thanks to goals from Miguel Merentiel and Rodrigo Battaglia and looked set for a night of celebration after Benfica went down to 10 men in the 72nd minute.
Boca fans had taken over Miami Beach over the weekend, thousands of them gathering on the seafront for a traditional 'banderazo', singing, drinking and waving flags for hours in the searing heat.
A video of Boca fans jumping and chanting in a local Walmart supermarket, to the bemusement of regular shoppers, had captured the mood but it was nothing compared to the atmosphere at Hard Rock Stadium.
The home of the Miami Dolphins was turned into a Bombonera by the beach, with 90% of the 55,574 crowd decked out in blue and yellow and bringing a level of constant noise rarely, if ever, heard for NFL games here.
When the action got underway it was clear that the enthusiasm from the stands was going to be matched on the field with Boca confirming the feeling that South American clubs in this tournament are out to prove a point against European opponents.
Boca's midfield buzzed around, they attacked at pace and tackled with aggression and the first huge roar came when Benfica's Argentine World Cup winner Di Maria received a rough challenge from behind.
But the physicality was laced with skill too and clever work from Lautaro Blanco down the left created the opening goal in the 21st minute.
Blanco cut in from the left flank, nutmegging Benfica defender Florentino and zipping a low ball in which was expertly flicked home by Merentiel.
The goal lifted the volume even higher and Benfica were struggling to cope six minutes later they fell 2-0 behind when from a deep Kevin Zenon corner, Ayrton Costa headed towards the back post were the alert Battaglia nodded home from close range.
Two-time European champions Benfica desperately needed to get a foothold in the game and they were gifted one when Boca's Carlos Palacios mistimed a challenge on Otamendi and after a VAR review - which included a red card for protesting from the already substituted Boca midfield Ander Herrera - a penalty was awarded.
The 37-year-old Di Maria showed all his experience to send Agustín Marchesín the wrong way as he gently slotted home to reduce the deficit.
The tempo slowed after the break but Boca had a chance to restore their two-goal lead in the 69th but Battaglia headed wide from a promising position.
Benfica found themselves further in trouble when Andrea Belotti, a half-time sub, was sent off in the 71st minute after a wild, high-footed kick into the head of Ayrton Costa.
But then with six minutes remaining Boca's defence failed to pick up Otamendi at a corner kick and the Argentine veteran met Orkun Kokcu's cross with a thundering header to level the game.
A disappointing result for Boca was compounded by a late red card for Nicolas Figal, who was dismissed for an ugly challenge on Florentino.
Group C also features Bayern Munich and Auckland FC.

Hockey: Deepika scores again but India's relegation woes deepen after 5-1 thrashing by Belgium

It is getting tougher for the Indian women's hockey team in their quest to avoid relegation from the FIH Pro League as they were blown away by a second-half set-piece masterclass by Belgium on Saturday in Antwerp. In a battle of the last two teams who finished fourth at the Olympic Games, the current gulf in class became evident as the match went on as India, despite holding a 1-0 lead at half time, had no answers to the relentless pressure from Belgium after the restart, conceding a plethora of penalty corners. The hosts won a total of 16 penalty corners and 1 penalty stroke, and all of their second half goals came from those set-piece situations. But it was Deepika (6') who had given India the lead with a drag flick of her own, continuing her fine form off penalty corners, in what is perhaps the biggest positive to emerge from the European leg of the Pro League for India so far. Belgium had the better chances in the first half anyway but were guilty of not converting. That would all change as Hélène Brasseur (37', 55'), Lucie Breyne (41'), Ambre Ballenghien (54'), and Charlotte Englebert (58') sealed victory for the hosts. The result has seen India drop to the 8th spot on the table with 10 points from their 13 matches, above only England who also lost on the day against Spain to give coach Harendra Singh's team some breathing room. But with Germany thrashing Australia 4-0 and moving up the table, it is heading toward a clear two-way battle between India and England to avoid the wooden spoon. India endured a nervy start as Belgium came out pressing with intent, earning a penalty corner within the opening minute. The early scare was averted, and Savita Punia soon followed up with a sharp save to keep the scoreboard untouched. An unforced error in India's half, as Vaishnavi Phalke completely mis-hit an aerial clearance, gifted Belgium possession again. But she made up for the error to tackle the forward in time and prevent a soft goal. Sitting deep and absorbing waves of pressure, India waited patiently for their chance on the break. When it came, they made it count. Their first circle entry resulted in a penalty corner, and Deepika's shot took a deflection off a Belgian defender before finding the back of the net to put India ahead. But it all unravelled in the second half, especially in the third quarter, when India conceded 8 penalty corners. Belgium entered the third quarter having made 10 circle entries to India's four, maintaining steady pressure on the defence. It took five penalty corners before Brasseur finally converted to bring Belgium level. Two more penalty corners followed, and despite a series of sharp saves from Savita, Breyne struck from close range during yet another set-piece to give Belgium a 2–1 lead. India laboured to find a way back, probing through the flanks in search of an opening in the final quarter, but the Belgian defence remained largely untroubled in the final third. The final ten minutes, however, were completely dominated by the hosts. In the 54th minute, Ballenghien effectively sealed the contest with a well-taken goal to make it 3–1. Five minutes later, Brasseur converted Belgium's fourth penalty corner, stretching the lead further. Just before the end, Englebert added her name to the scoresheet, calmly slotting home a penalty stroke in the 58th minute to complete a comprehensive win for Belgium.

Will Mbappe play in Real Madrid vs Pachuca at FIFA Club World Cup 2025?

Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe skipped Saturday's collective training session and is set to miss the 15-time European champions' Group H game against Pachuca at the Club World Cup, the club said. Mbappe, who was admitted to a Miami area hospital earlier this week with acute gastroenteritis, had stayed at the team hotel and would not be travelling to Charlotte, North Carolina, for Sunday's match, a Real spokesperson said. The 26-year-old missed Madrid's opening match of the tournament — a 1-1 draw against Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal in Miami. Manager Xabi Alonso said the France international was in 'rough shape' and had been unable to train for days. 'Mbappe will continue with specific medical treatment and will gradually return to the team's activity,' the club said in a statement regarding his hospital discharge. Real Madrid also said that ahead of its second Club World Cup fixture, Mbappe and Carvajal trained at the facilities at the team's hotel. He was Madrid's top scorer last season, netting 43 goals in 56 appearances in his debut year after joining from Paris Saint-Germain.

Bayern, Flamengo reach Club World Cup last 16

New York, Jun 21 (UNI) Bayern Munich and Flamengo booked their places in the last 16 of the FIFA Club World Cup on Friday with wins over Boca Juniors and Chelsea, while Benfica boosted its hopes of advancing after routing Auckland City. Esperance also kept alive its knockout-stage chances by edging past Los Angeles FC, which joined Auckland in exiting the tournament. In Philadelphia, Brazil's Flamengo moved three points clear at the top of Group D after recovering from a goal down to overcome Chelsea 3-1. Portuguese winger Pedro Neto put Chelsea ahead when he capitalized on Wesley Franca's miscued clearance to dribble almost half the length of the pitch before calmly shooting past Argentine goalkeeper Agustin Rossi. Flamengo equalized just after the hour through Bruno Henrique, who tapped home after Gonzalo Plata flicked on Gerson's cross. The Rio de Janeiro outfit suddenly had the momentum, and Henrique turned provider three minutes later as his header set up Danilo to volley home at the far post. Chelsea was reduced to 10 men in the 68th minute after Nicolas Jackson was shown a straight red card for a studs-up challenge on Lucas Ayrton. Wallace Yan put the result beyond doubt by playing a slick one-two with Plata before firing in from the edge of the six-yard box. "We always believed that we had a chance," Flamengo manager Filipe Luis said afterwards. "I'm very proud because after our mistake in giving away the first goal, we didn't drop our heads. We continued to play the same way. We gave our all until the end and that warms my heart." In Orlando, Angel Di Maria and Leandro Barreiro scored twice apiece as Benfica romped to a 6-0 victory over Auckland City. Benfica initially struggled to breach the New Zealand club's five-man defense but Di Maria broke the deadlock from the penalty spot just before halftime. It was all one-way traffic thereafter, despite a two-hour delay due to a storm alert. Vangelis Pavlidis, Renato Sanches, Barreiro and Di Maria were all on target in the second half as Benfica registered its first win of the tournament. The Portuguese side is now second in Group C with four points while Auckland City is last with 16 goals conceded in two matches. "This is the longest game of my career," Benfica head coach Bruno Lage said. "A special thanks to our fans, who have been here for five hours supporting the team. We played as well as we could. The [hot] temperature made it very difficult." In Nashville, Tunisia's Esperance kept alive its hopes of reaching the next stage with a 1-0 victory over Los Angeles FC. Youcef Belaili handed his side the lead in the 70th minute when he pounced on a loose ball in the area and drilled a low shot that deflected in off the left leg of goalkeeper Hugo Lloris. Esperance is now third in Group D and will need to beat Chelsea in Philadelphia on Tuesday to progress to the knockout phase. Los Angeles FC is fourth, having failed to pick up a point so far and with no chance of progressing. In Miami, France international midfielder Michael Olise scored late as Bayern Munich kept its perfect record intact with a 2-1 win over Argentine side Boca Juniors. Harry Kane opened the scoring for the Bundesliga champions when he intercepted a defensive clearance and fired low into the far corner with his weaker left foot. Uruguayan forward Miguel Merentiel equalized by running onto Alan Velasco's through ball and ghosting past Josip Stanisic before clinically finishing past Manuel Neuer. Olise restored Bayern's lead six minutes from time with a fizzing drive from distance after Kane's clever layoff. While the German club is assured of a place in the next round, Boca will need to defeat Auckland City by a hefty margin on Tuesday to have any chance of advancing. UNI RKM
