Hon Shane Jones
Minister for Regional Development
The Regional Infrastructure Fund will invest up to $2 million to investigate building additional electricity transmission and distribution capacity in Northland, which could also have benefits further afield, Regional Development Minister Shane Jones says.
'New Zealand needs significantly more electricity generation as the economy grows and demand for power increases. Northland is rich in natural renewable resources, such as wind and solar which are suitable for generating renewable energy,' Mr Jones says.
The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) will use up to $2m from the Regional Infrastructure Fund to investigate the feasibility of upgrading Northland's electricity infrastructure to act as an 'energy bridge' between Northland and Auckland.
MBIE will also carry out an economic analysis of the potential benefits in conjunction with local stakeholders.
'This project has the potential to unlock $1 billion of private investment in new renewable energy. If this is feasible, Northland could become a significant electricity generator and supplier of power which might have flow-on benefits for Auckland and the rest of the country,' Mr Jones says.
'This investment could increase electricity self-sufficiency in the region and improve the power generation capacity and resilience of the Northland network which will benefit local people. It could also reduce power prices for Auckland and nationally if wholesale prices can be brought down.
'More detailed work needs to be done into the feasibility of expanding Northland's power generation before further government funding can be considered but if the outcome is positive, the payoff could be massive.
'This is a long-term project and there is a lot of water to pass under the bridge yet, but if it goes ahead some new power generation could come online as components are completed, with full commissioning by 2029,' Mr Jones says.
The project aligns with the Coalition Government's goals of building infrastructure and doubling renewable energy generation for New Zealand by 2035 to reduce emissions and enable economic growth.

Steampunk Festival gets $10k boost to support growth

PHOTO: ODT FILES Promotion of Oamaru's Steampunk Festival has been given a $10,000 boost to bring in more people. Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment manager of investment management performance David Talbot said to receive funding, the funding was assessed against the likelihood of the event being able to attract more out-of-region visitors and additional multi-day visitors, as well as it being able to deliver economic impact for visitors in the host region. "The Steampunk Festival is going from strength to strength each year, bringing hundreds of visitors from outside the district for the long weekend," Tourism Waitaki general manager Philippa Agnew said. "Events such as the Steampunk Festival give the industry a boost during the quiet season." Funding, awarded to Tourism Waitaki, comes from the government's Regional Event Fund. "Investing in these events has a direct impact, with visitors spending money in local cafes, businesses and accommodation providers, driving economic activity in our communities," Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston said in a statement. "By growing regional tourism, our remote and rural communities can benefit from the economic opportunities it brings. "Events are excellent drawcards to get more visitors into our regions, particularly in quieter parts of the year for the tourism and hospitality sector. "New Zealand is open for business, and we encourage both Kiwis and international visitors alike to explore and enjoy what New Zealand has to offer." This year's festival, held over King's Birthday weekend sold a record 1723 tickets to paid events and attracted hundreds more who came to watch free community events.

Jones Funding Fantasy Fossil Fuel Fountain

Minister of Resources Shane Jones can't – or won't – say what the criteria are for his $200 million subsidy for gas companies. 'We asked Shane Jones what the criteria are for his handouts to overseas fossil fuel companies in this morning's scrutiny hearing, but he couldn't tell us,' Labour energy and resources spokesperson Megan Woods said. 'That transparency is hugely important when we're talking about $200 million in taxpayer money that is going to subsidise their operations. 'Has he already decided who gets it? What's the process for that, and what happens if they don't find any gas, given no new gas reserves have been found in New Zealand for years? 'This subsidy is an irresponsible choice and further delays the much-needed transition away from fossil fuels, which are the leading cause of greenhouse gas emissions. 'That money could be better spent building new warm, dry, energy-efficient homes; investing in our health system; or ensuring a just transition to good well-paying jobs for those currently working in the oil and gas industry. 'Shane Jones says he wants to open up the entire South Island to oil and gas exploration when companies have already spent hundreds of millions of dollars looking for fossil fuels without finding any. 'A responsible government needs to take a long-term view of where opportunities lie in our regions and where opportunities lie for New Zealanders in work. The Minister is showing absolutely no ability to do that and is focused on a fairy tale,' Megan Woods said.
