I'm a property expert – 7 key factors that have helped celebrities sell their homes & how to do it yourself on a budget

The Sun17-05-2025

THESE celebrity-approved tricks will help elevate your home's interior in an instant.
And you can even carry out these handy hacks without breaking the bank.

Property staging experts have revealed the steps celebrities swear by to dazzle potential buyers, selling their homes in a flash.
And you don't even need an A-lister's bank balance to carry to replicate them.
Liv Conlon launched ThePropertyStagers when she was just 16 years-old and made a whopping £1 million before she turned 18.
She shared some of best high-end yet budget-friendly home viewings tips with the Daily Mail.
"Celebrities may have an off-the-scale budget when it comes to styling their homes for sale - but there are ways to copy the look on a budget," the pro explained.
"Whether it's creating an unforgettable first impression, using crisp five-star hotel-standard bedding, or a homely aroma wafting around the kitchen, you don't need a Hollywood income to achieve the same effect.
"Putting things in place now if you are looking to market your property, will only stand you in good stead."
GRAND ENTRANCE
The first step to making a quick sale is to make a good first impression, and that begins at your front door.
Citing Kris Jenner's $13.5 million mansion, the property pro broke down the importance of "grand entrance".
She explained that the mom-ager has "two winding staircases and a chandelier hanging from the ceiling - hence creating a 'wow factor'".
A house's entrance creates an "impactful first impression as someone walks into your home".
And you can manage this without calling up Kris' contractor for a redmodel.
She recommended opting for a "clutter-free environment" and use "a large mirror to create the illusion of space and bounce light around".
The expert advised people to "upgrade your front door with a fresh coat of paint or stylish new hardware".
Adding "a sleek console table with chic décor like candles or a sculptural vase" can also help level up your entrance way.
Finally, the pro explained that "using a bold but sophisticated rug to create a defined entry space" can make all the difference.
HOTEL-STYLE BEDROOMS
Celebrities such as Olivia Attwood have incorporated fresh crisp bedsheets into their homes to add a luxurious feel.
"There's nothing quite like slipping into crisp, white sheets - especially if you're staying at a luxurious hotel and you know someone else is making the bed the next day," the property pro said.
"Celebrities are well aware that a plush, spa-like bedroom instantly increases a home's appeal.
"It allows potential buyers to want to see themselves relaxing in the space."
She referenced Olivia's soft linens, neutral colour palette, and layered textures, all of which perfect the cosy feel.
"I know I'd love to live there - and so will potential buyers," the expert said.
To achieve this look on a budget, invest in "white or neutral bedding", helping to "create a clean, high-end look".
You can also add an upholstered headboard to create an expensive feel to the space.
"Layer throw pillows and cozy blankets for texture," the pro recommended.
She also suggested using matching bedside lamps to create a "balanced aesthetic".
SCENTED HOME
7
Scent can be just as important as visuals when staging a desirable home.
"Walking into a viewing and being greeted by the smell of sweaty trainers, or musty pets is bound to get up the noses of potential buyers," the pro explained.
She described a signature scent as a "secret weapon" in creating a luxury home.
"Many celebrities, such as Victoria Beckham, use subtle yet sophisticated fragrances to create an inviting atmosphere throughout their homes," she said.
The professional stager recommended using essential oil diffusers with scents like sandalwood, vanilla, or citrus.
"Place bowls of dried lavender or eucalyptus in key areas," she added.
You can also place scented candles throughout your home.
GOURMET KITCHEN
7
Your kitchen layout is another key aspect to how your home may be viewed by others.
Ensuring the culinary space is tidy and organised is vital to creating a "chef's paradise".
The property pro commended Meghan Markle's kitchen as "a great example, with stylish open shelving and neatly arranged accessories".
"While you might not have thousands to spend on interior design, there are easy ways to improve or make the best of what you've got," the expert said.
One way is to ensure countertops are clear, with only a "few chic kitchen accessories".
Homeowners can also "arrange fresh fruit in a stylish bowl for a pop of colour" or use "matching storage jars to create a cohesive look" as well as swapping "cabinet handles for a sleek, modern update".
NATURAL LIGHT
7
Ben and Annie Shepard's home maximises natural light, a step which the stager recommends everyone follow.
"Walking into a dark, dingy home isn't going to create the best first impression," she pointed out.
"Something luxury homes do well is always appearing bright and airy, making spaces feel bigger and more welcoming.
"Natural light enhances a home's appeal by creating a warm and inviting atmosphere, while also showing off architectural details and high-end finishes.
"Buyers are drawn to spaces that feel open and illuminated, as they subconsciously associate brightness with cleanliness and spaciousness."
The property pro recommended swapping out heavier blinds or curtains for sheer or light-coloured ones.
She also suggested placing mirrors strategically to reflect natural light, opening up the space.
"Keep windows spotless to maximise brightness," she said, adding that light-coloured paint helps to make rooms feel larger.
STATEMENT ARTWORK
7
The staging expert also said it's "not unusual" to see oversized art pieces in celebrity homes.
These create "an instant focal point" in the room, which helps to elevate the space.
"In terms of styling, large-scale artwork adds a sense of sophistication, drama, and personality to a home," she explained.
Amanda Holden is one of many celebrities to have executed this design technique well.
The property pro recommended "using abstract paintings, bold photography, or custom commissions to reflect style".
If you're on a budget, she suggested "printing high-resolution artwork from free online resources and framing it".
Or you can DIY your own abstract painting using inexpensive canvases and acrylic paints.
Wall decals or removable wallpaper can also help create "an instant focal point" in the home.
INDOOR-OUTDOOR LIVING SPACES
7
The expert referenced Victoria and David Beckham's home for the prime example of this set up.
She described the family's house is a masterclass in the blending of indoor and outdoor spaces.
According to the pro, this feature creates an "airy feel" that's perfect for entertaining.
"Hollywood homes blur the lines between indoor and outdoor living, creating seamless entertaining areas," she said.
"It's something we're seeing creeping into everyone's homes.
"A great example of this is David and Victoria Beckham's Cotswolds estate, which features large glass doors that open up to an expansive outdoor space with a terrace and stunning views, creating a seamless transition from the interior to the garden.
"The design allows for an open, airy feel that's perfect for entertaining guests while enjoying the natural surroundings."
To perfect this feature on a budget, she recommended use string lights and lanterns "to add ambiance to patios or balconies".
You could also "arrange outdoor seating with affordable cushions and throws" alongside potted plants to "make the space inviting".
She also recommended adding an outdoor rug to help "define space".

‘It's been incredible': Little Simz ends Meltdown festival with orchestral show

The 31-year-old, whose real name is Simbiatu Ajikawo, brought out guests including rapper Wretch 32, Nigerian artist Obongjayar, and singer Miraa May, during a show which saw her backed by Europe's first majority black and ethnically diverse orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall. After opening with Introvert from Mercury Prize-winning album Sometimes I Might Be Introvert (2021), the London-born rapper told the crowd: 'Thank you guys so much for coming to see me this evening. A post shared by simz (@littlesimz) 'This is the last day of Meltdown festival, it's been incredible, please make some noise for the Chineke! Orchestra, please make some noise for my band on stage tonight, I want to have a good time with you guys, here we go.' She then kicked into Thief from latest album Lotus, which was released earlier this month. The artist said she was 'very excited' to be playing her new record live, but told the audience she was also going to 'take it back', before performing Two Worlds Apart. Before I Love You, I Hate You, Simz asked the crowd: 'Why you lot sitting down?' prompting them to spring into the air, dancing and singing along, where they remained for the rest of the concert. For Heart On Fire from No Thank You (2022) the rapper hopped off the stage and prowled into the crowd, waving to and holding hands with fans, while Venom, one of her best known tracks, saw Simz jump on to the conductor's podium to conduct the orchestra for the song's opening while rapping. Before Free, from her latest record, Simz told the audience: 'This next song, I wrote as a poem, and I'm so happy I made it into a song, because, it's even stuff I need to hear sometimes, you know? 'If you know it, if you like it, I would love if we can sing it together, I think it'll sound beautiful in here.' For Peace, the rapper brought out singer May, who she said she had known 'for a very long time, since we was like 14, 15', adding that they used to sit in a park in Shoreditch and write songs together, saying it was 'so special' to perform with her on the night. Obongjayar, who released his second album Paradise Now in May, brought upbeat party vibes for Lotus's Lion and Sometimes I Might Be Introvert's Point And Kill. London-born rapper Wretch 32 appeared on the balcony as Simz began the duet Blood from her latest album, making his way down to the stage, where they were joined by singer Cashh for the family argument-turned song. Before last two songs, Woman and Gorilla, she said: 'This has been so special, man, thank you guys for being here, thank you so much to Chineke! Orchestra, most importantly you guys, man, you guys, honestly. 'It's been so much fun, you've been dancing, you've been singing and really catching our vibe. 'I'm so very grateful.' This year's Meltdown, curated by Simz, has seen performances from the likes of Lola Young, The Streets and Ghetts since the 11-day festival began on June 12. Each year the event is curated by a different artist, with last year's event being planned by Chaka Khan, while other past curators include David Bowie, Grace Jones and Patti Smith. Meltdown has become known for unique performances, with The Smiths' lead singer Morrissey getting a reunited New York Dolls to perform at his 2004 event, Ray Davies restaging 1960s TV pop show Ready Steady Go! in 2011, and Jeff Buckley playing his final UK show at Elvis Costello's Meltdown in 1995.

Food-shaped candles are latest dinner party trend

If you see some half-melted strawberry tarts or unsavoury-looking fried chicken strewn across the table when you arrive at your next dinner party, don't be alarmed. Your host has not forgotten to clear up their last meal. They are trying to impress you with the latest middle-class homeware trend: food-shaped candles. Selfridges reports that food-shaped candles are now its fastest-selling table decoration and it has had to treble its range to meet demand. A triple layer cake candle weighing more than 2kg is one of the offerings at Selfridges SELFRIDGES The department store said candles in the form of a lemon, a fried egg and red grapes are among its top sellers. Candles that resemble a string of sausages, a slice of Gruyere, a baguette or a strawberry tart are also in strong demand. Prices range from £17 to £95. Leading the unusual trend is Laila Gohar, an Egyptian artist known for transforming ordinary food into striking sculptural and interactive installations, such as a rope of braided mozzarella and a swan made of artichoke leaves. One of Gohar's most popular food candles resembles, quite convincingly, a tin of biscuits. She also sells a set of strawberry candles, although none of her creations come cheap. Her set of four fried chicken candles, thankfully unscented, will set buyers back £38, significantly more than a bucket of the real thing from KFC. Fried chicken candles from Gohar World SELFRIDGES The striking creations have taken social media by storm and the hashtag #foodcandle has had tens of millions of views on TikTok. Some enterprising food influencers have even crossed the line into making edible candles. Erin Dittmer's video on how to make a 'butter candle' has been viewed more nearly 14 million times. This involves pouring melted butter and herbs into a paper cup containing an edible wick and then freezing it. Once solid, the paper cup is torn away, the lump of butter placed in a hole torn out of a farmhouse loaf and the wick set alight. The butter slowly melts down the bread, creating a delicious if messy snack. Erin Dittmer's butter candle in her video on TikTok The latest additions to the Selfridges food candle range come from the Italian firm Introna, which has been making candles since 1840. These include a 'pink pudding' candle at £45, a banana candle at £18 and green apple candle at £18. Selfridges said the strong interest in the candles is part of a wider trend for 'foodie decorations'. Last Christmas, for example, the store doubled its range of food and drink shaped baubles to meet demand. Gregory Krum, buying manager at Selfridges, said: 'If you want to bring a fun talking point to your dinner table, now is the time to think beyond the traditional candle.'

The cocktail set to dethrone Aperol as spritz of the summer

Evoking memories of countryside rambles and summer fêtes, there can be few more quintessentially British flavours than elderflower. After years of underwhelming demand, sales of drinks infused with the taste are suddenly booming, boosted in particular by the sudden popularity of the Hugo spritz cocktail, which younger drinkers are turning to as an alternative to the stronger Aperol. Ocado has reported that demand for elderflower liqueur, a key ingredient in the cocktail, is up by 107 per cent year-on-year. Sales of elderflower cordial and elderflower sparking pressé are also rising, up nearly 50 per cent and 80 per cent respectively, according to the online supermarket. Elderflower comes from the elder tree (Sambucus nigra), which is native to much of Europe and particularly prevalent in the UK. It grows widely in hedgerows, woodlands and along roadsides and has long been associated with British cuisine. The revival in demand for the flavour coincides with an extended period of warm weather. As temperatures in much of Britain have hit the high twenties over the past few weeks, Hugo spritz videos have been going viral on social media. One video by a travel influencer, Juli Cuevas, which declares 2025 to be a 'Hugo spritz summer', has been viewed nearly three million times on TikTok. Many of the comments compare the cocktail favourably with the Aperol spritz, which is typically stronger and has a bitter taste whereas a Hugo is lighter and sweeter. Another video by 'The Wannabe Bartender' showing a guide on how to make a Hugo spritz, which includes prosecco, mint, soda water and lime, has been viewed 1.6 million times. In the video, Henrik Liverod, who has more than 350,000 followers, declares the Aperol spritz 'boring' and tells his viewers that they 'deserve better'. He describes the Hugo spritz as 'lit', slang for excellent or exciting. After drinking his creation, Liverod adds: 'It's summery, it's fresh, it's refreshing, it's mmm, it gives you an orgasm on your tastebuds.' • My evening with the app that finds the best pubs to catch the sun A spokesman for Ocado said elderflower was 'having a renaissance'. He added that the Hugo spritz offered a more 'homegrown take' on a summer cocktail because it was rooted in a 'British flavour'. The drink actually originates in South Tyrol, a German-speaking region in northern Italy. It is reported to have been invented in 2005 by a bartender, Roland Gruber, as a lighter alternative to the Aperol spritz. His original version included lemon balm syrup, often known as melissa syrup, which was later often substituted with elderflower syrup or St-Germain liqueur as the drink spread beyond the region. Gruber reportedly chose the name 'Hugo' simply because he liked how it sounded. My 'It drink' of the summer isn't a putrid orange Aperol or an elderflower cocktail, it's non-alcohol spritz made by Mother Root, which counts Nigella Lawson among its fans and sells in Waitrose for £27.95 a bottle. The British alcohol-free brand launched in 2019 and has been quietly converting cocktail lovers like me with its alcohol-free aperitifs ever since. It doesn't matter that they don't have booze in. They are delicious. I was won over by the limited edition marmalade flavour that first launched in 2023. Then I tried the ginger aperitif, made with apple cider vinegar, blossom honey and ginger and chilli, that came out last year. I'm not surprised it sold out on their website in 20 minutes (it's been restocked now, thank goodness) or that since launching in Waitrose in January, sales have soared by 80 per cent. What I am most excited about is their lovely new limited edition rhubarb flavour, which comes out on Wednesday and is a blend of rhubarb root and apple cider. It sounds delectable served as suggested: ice cold in a champagne flute with cold soda water. Even Nigella is vying for a bottle, eagerly commenting on the brand's Instagram page last week that she'd be ordering some. I will be joining her.
