GRS to Bung: Don't play victim, we don't need you

KOTA KINABALU (June 3): Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) information chief Datuk Joniston Bangkuai has fired back at Sabah Umno chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, calling his latest remarks arrogant and disconnected from Sabah's political reality.
'Bung is the last person who should talk about loyalty or sincerity. He tried to bring down the very government he was part of, just to serve his own ambition. That speaks volumes,' he said.
Joniston dismissed Bung's claim that GRS had betrayed Barisan Nasional (BN), describing it as a clear attempt to twist the narrative and deflect from his own actions.
'It's Bung who conspired with Warisan and PKDM in January 2023 to topple the government led by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.
'He wasn't betrayed, he was the one doing the betraying. Even while sitting in the State Cabinet, he had no respect for his colleagues in the State government led by Hajiji as Chief Minister.'
Joniston stressed that GRS has never been reliant on Umno and is fully prepared to face the upcoming state election independently.
As such Bung should stop with his arrogance by insinuating as if GRS is so hard up to work with Umno-BN.
He also pointed out that during the political crisis, several Umno assemblymen refused to support Bung's move and instead threw their backing behind Hajiji, alongside PH.
'If anyone needs to reflect, it's Bung. Why did even your own colleagues abandon your 'Langkah Kinabalu'? Why did PH support Hajiji, not you? The answer is obvious because the trust wasn't with you,' he said.
Joniston, who is also PBS information chief, reiterated that his party would never forget the insult hurled by Bung when he once labelled PBS as 'melukut di tepi gantang'.
'You showed no respect for PBS or your allies, and now you expect cooperation? Don't be surprised if Sabahans continue to reject Umno just like they did in other states across the Peninsula.
'Sabah isn't your political lifeline. Don't treat this state like your fallback plan,' he said, stressing that GRS is now focused on what matters – unity, stability and delivering for the people.

Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali called for a structural rethinking of federal-state relations, saying Sabah's interests must be negotiated government-to-government and not through political party channels. 'The relationship between the federal and state governments must be inter-governmental, not intra-party,' Armizan stressed, in a pointed critique of how national political dominance can undermine state priorities. He said GRS does not reject cooperation with national parties, but believes local parties must lead the Sabah Government to safeguard state interests. 'Too often, when both levels of government are controlled by the same national party, state matters are first discussed behind closed party doors. This compromises Sabah's voice,' he said. He warned that intra-party negotiations can lead to federal interests being prioritised over regional concerns, especially when national party loyalty is seen as absolute. 'We've seen this happen in the decades-long delay of MA63 implementation, where party lines muted state demands,' said Armizan. Advertisement While he welcomed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's more responsive stance on MA63, Armizan cautioned that state rights should not depend on the goodwill of individual leaders. 'Commitment can change with federal leadership. That's why we need a structural model that guarantees Sabah's interests will be respected, regardless of who is in power.' He reaffirmed GRS' core philosophy of Sabah First, emphasising that the state government must always place Sabah's agenda above all else. 'We do not oppose national interests, but let the federal government champion that. The state government must be led by local parties who understand and prioritise Sabah.' As Sabah gears up for its next state election, Armizan reiterated that GRS intends to lead the state administration. 'This election is about choosing the Sabah government. Let national parties lead Putrajaya. We will support and cooperate. But let local parties lead in Sabah,' he said. He also said GRS remains open to collaborating with national parties, including during the election, but on the understanding that local parties be given the space to contest and lead at the state level. "This is the model that currently defines the GRS-PH Plus cooperation, a federal coalition led by national parties, and a Sabah government grounded in local leadership,' he said after officiating the Gagasan Rakyat Darau AGM on Sunday. Meanwhile, GRS direct member Datuk Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan urged Sabah leaders to move beyond internal political feuds and focus on a united vision for the state's future. 'We need to stop fighting. Sabahan leaders have been fighting among themselves for years. Why can't we stand together, be objective, and look ahead to Sabah's future especially for the next generation?' he asked. He was responding to certain leaders and the public who preferred to see GRS go solo at the polls, calling them to reflect on what Sabah truly needs. 'Do we want to keep fighting? Policy document wraps up session

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah's civil society platform, Sabar (Sabah Action Body Advocating Rights) wrapped up town hall sessions under the 'Sabah Voices to Action' series with the message that the future lies in empowering youth and demanding accountability from politicians. It was the final of their eight engagements across Sabah which saw over 300 participants converge at Wisma Wanita, Sunday. Sabar Chairman Datuk Zainie Abdul Aucasa expressed pride in presenting a document of aspirations and actions derived from four months of listening to the people. He said the policy document will be submitted to all parties contesting the coming state election, in the expectation that the proposals would be adopted in their manifestos and more importantly, implemented after the polls. 'We don't want to see a repeat of past promises that were abandoned after elections. This initiative is about building a new political culture that instills responsibility and follows through,' he said. Looking ahead, Zainie revealed that Sabar would shift focus toward engaging young Sabahans in the next phase of their work. Advertisement 'We want to walk with the youth, shape their political mindset, and help them understand the importance of choosing leaders who keep their word. 'They must know how to pick representatives who genuinely deliver on their promises. That's how we build a better Sabah, one election at a time,' he said. He hoped the manifesto guide crafted from these town hall sessions would serve not just this election cycle, but for many to come. SAPP Women's Youth Wing Chief, Yvonne Yong Yit Phung, hailed the initiative as a much-needed departure from the typical political echo chamber, calling for more youth to step forward and help shape Sabah's future. Yvonne praised the organisers for encouraging proactive dialogue and engaging youth in meaningful policy discussions. 'The way questions were framed, how discussions were guided, it was very professional. It showed how much the youth care, and how much potential they have if given the platform,' she said. Vice President of Borneo History, Sahar Piasin, 65, welcomed the shift in focus at the final town hall, noting a refreshing change from previous events. 'Unlike before, which mostly centred around MA63, this time the emphasis was more on youth development through education, rural empowerment, and infrastructure. That made it very interesting,' he said. Sahar noted that speakers appeared to deliberately target students and young people, which, in turn, deserves the attention of Sabahan parents. 'They weren't just asking for opportunities, they were being spoken to directly about the future of their children. That made a real impact,' he added.
