Bengaluru's bike taxi riders in a fix over ban, urge Karnataka govt to reverse crackdown

Hindustan Times21 hours ago

Days after the bike taxi ban in Karnataka, over a hundred bike taxi riders affiliated with the Namma Bike Taxi Association on Thursday convened with Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao and Dasarahalli MLA S Muniraju, calling for a reversal of the decision, news agency ANI reported.
Acting on behalf of thousands of drivers state-wide, the association submitted a formal appeal seeking lawful recognition for bike taxis and the introduction of a structured regulatory framework to eliminate confusion and harassment.
This meeting comes after several ignored communications to key political leaders, including Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, and MP Rahul Gandhi, the report stated. The Congress government in Karnataka came under fire for its silence particularly due to its recent passage of the Gig Worker Welfare Bill, a legislation meant to protect workers in flexible job markets.
'My phone won't stop ringing - 250 to 300 drivers call me every day, asking for help. And I don't know what to tell them. Should we lose our livelihoods because the government has no policy for bike taxis? We don't want chaos. We need regulation, not a ban,' Mohammed Salim, President, Namma Bike Taxi Association, said, as quoted by ANI.
Bike taxi drivers said there are rising tensions with auto-rickshaw unions, while commuters also expressed frustration over a spike in Bengaluru's traffic as well as auto rickshaw and taxi fares after the crackdown on bike taxis.

The Central Government's Motor Vehicle Aggregator Guidelines of 2020 classify bike taxis as legitimate under Section 2(7), but Karnataka has yet to enact corresponding state regulations. Although an Electric Bike Taxi Policy was introduced in 2021, it was quietly repealed in 2024 without explanation, leaving both service providers and users in a regulatory vacuum.

Operation Sindhu: 517 Indian nationals returned to India from Iran so far, says MEA

Nearly 517 Indian nationals have so far returned to India from Iran under Operation Sindhu , Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said Saturday. A special evacuation flight from Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, landed in Delhi in the early hours of June 21, bringing home Indian nationals from Iran as part of Operation Sindhu. The ongoing evacuation exercise was launched by the Indian government following rising security risks due to the conflict between Iran and Israel. Jaiswal confirmed the latest arrival in a post on X. 'Operation Sindhu continues. A special evacuation flight from Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, landed in New Delhi at 0300 hrs on 21st June, bringing Indians from Iran home. With this, so far 517 Indian nationals from Iran have returned home under Operation Sindhu,' he posted. (Join our ETNRI WhatsApp channel for all the latest updates) — MEAIndia (@MEAIndia) Live Events The Indian Embassy in Tehran has been coordinating the movement of citizens on the ground, while the MEA is overseeing their return to India. A fresh group of evacuees, including students and religious travellers, reached Delhi on Saturday as Iran makes a rare exception for New Delhi to evacuate 1,000 Indians amid its airspace closure. With the situation on the ground growing volatile, the government has stepped up efforts to ensure the safety of its nationals through organised evacuation flights and cross-border movement. Among those who returned was Zaffar Abbas Naqvi , who described how the situation escalated suddenly. 'Everything was going fine, but one day we heard that Iran had been attacked. We stayed indoors for some time. We then moved to Mashhad. Soon Mashhad came under attack. We then contacted the Indian government. The action was so swift that we cannot express our gratitude in words. I want to thank Modi ji and Yogi ji who made all the arrangements for us,' Naqvi was quoted as saying by ANI. Kulsum, another Indian national who returned safely, said the situation was tense in Iran. 'The situation in Iran is not good. We were very worried. The government helped us a lot and brought us back home safely,' she said while speaking to ANI. Earlier, the first batch of evacuees, 110 Indian students, including 90 from Jammu and Kashmir, was transported out of northern Iran to Armenia, before being flown to New Delhi. In response, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched 'Operation True Promise 3,' targeting Israeli energy infrastructure with missiles and drones. (With ANI inputs)

Day after high-stake Ludhiana West Assembly bypoll: Leaders unwind with family, sip tea with party colleagues

After an intense and tiring campaign in the hot and sultry weather, candidates from different political parties finally took some time off. While some leaders chose to relax and spend time with their families, others also held some informal interactions with their party workers. For Sanjeev Arora, whose campaign lasted over 3.5 months — as he was announced the candidate in the last week of February—Friday was a much-needed pause. 'I allowed myself a rare indulgence — I slept in and started the day slow. Upon waking up, I requested my team and the Municipal Corporation to begin the process of removing all campaign-related material, including posters, wall wraps, and stickers across the constituency,' he said. He added that he had a light breakfast. 'And more importantly, spent quality time with my family — something I had deeply missed during the campaign. I was finally able to be present with my grandchildren, Aria, Anhad, and Ivaan. Hearing them say, 'Dadu, it's so nice to finally see you — we were only seeing you on posters and hoardings!' was a heartfelt reminder of how much time I had been away,' he said, adding that they had lunch together as a family, and he took them all out to their favourite restaurant. Congress candidate Bharat Bhushan Ashu, who had a heated campaign, had a sore throat on Friday. He said, 'I am meeting all my friends who had helped me throughout the campaign despite all odds. But Friday's meeting was just a thanksgiving gesture. I wanted to have a cup of tea with them and we discussed nothing political.' Earlier in the day, he had also spent time with his workers at his office inside his house in Model Gram. Ashu, along with his wife Mamta Ashu, spent the evening with friends sipping their favourite 'kadak chai'. When asked about the outcome of the poll, he said, 'Will accept the result as it is.' BJP candidate Jiwan Gupta also spent time with his family, even entering his home kitchen to make a cup of tea for himself and his wife. 'We hadn't sat together for even 5 minutes in the past many days. So, we decided to drink tea together after a lazy start to the day.' SAD candidate Parupkar Singh Ghumman, however, hit the gym on Friday morning—something he had been missing for the past many days. He said, 'I had been a regular to the gym for the past four years, either early in the morning or late at night… but as I couldn't exercise all these days, I want to get back to my fitness routine yet again. As I am a diabetic, I take care of my health by doing regular exercise apart from focusing on diet.' He said that he had presented his vision before the masses and that now it was over to the voters, with the verdict due on Monday. The bypoll for Ludhiana West Assembly, which was held on Thursday, saw 51.33% polling. Counting will take place on June 23. A post poll scrutiny of Form-17 A and other documents for Ludhiana West by-poll was conducted by General Observer Rajeev Kumar, Returning Officer Rupinder Pal Singh and the representatives of the candidates at Khalsa College For Women. The scrutiny was carried out to check the polling station where any significant event EVM related or otherwise was reported, whether polling took place in the absence of any polling agent, polling stations where the number of electors who cast their vote using documents other than electronic photo identity card ( EPIC) and exceeding 25% of the total votes cast in the polling station, polling stations where more than 10% of electors have been identified as ASD turned up to vote, polling stations where polling percentage is plus 15% or minus 15 % than the average polling percentage of the AC and others.
