Razif Sidek discharged from hospital
KUALA LUMPUR: Badminton legend Datuk Razif Sidek, who has just recovered from a serious health condition, has never missed a beat about the sport in the country.
His passion for badminton had, in fact, helped him recover faster from pneumonia.
Razif has been in high spirits since being discharged from hospital on Monday.
"I am getting
better each day. I have another check-up in two weeks' time, and in the meantime, I just need to take a good rest," Razif said when contacted by Timesport on Thursday.
"Everything should be alright after that, and I am thankful for the moral support that I have received from family, friends, and fans.
"Badminton has always kept me going."
Razif had also enquired about the progress of the doubles, and was delighted to hear that independent pairs - Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani and Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai have joined the Road to Gold (RTG) programme yesterday.

New ‘home' for pros
Breakthrough: Currently, the independent shuttlers Nur Izzuddin Rumsani (second from left) and Goh Sze Fei (right) as well as Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie (below) train at the Endah Parade mall in Seri Petaling. PETALING JAYA: Professional doubles pairs Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani and Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie are set to get a new 'home' for training under the Road to Gold (RTG) programme. Plans are underway to provide them with a more conducive training venue, which will help them in preparation for the 2028 Los Angeles Games. Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, who also chairs the RTG committee, acknowledged that most professional players currently have to secure their own training spaces. Currently, for these four shuttlers, their training sessions are held at the Endah Parade mall in Sri Petaling under coach Teo Kok Siang. To improve their training conditions, the RTG committee are looking to streamline and upgrade access to existing infrastructure to help raise their performance levels. RTG coordinator Datuk Stuart Ramalingam has been made aware of the issue and is working to identify a more suitable location for the pairs. Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie training at the Pioneer Badminton Centre in Endah Parade ahead of the All-England —Low Boon Tat / The Star For the record, all four players signed their contracts with the Road to Gold (RTG) programme on Wednesday, joining 12 existing athletes already in the initiative. 'This matter (initial assistance) has been addressed by Datuk Stuart, but from past experience with pro athletes under RTG, we know they require services from the National Sports Institute. 'I also hope we can help find them a proper and more private training venue so they no longer need to train in a shopping mall,' said Hannah. The RTG committee are also looking into additional forms of support that can be extended to the players, including the inclusion of training partners. At the same time, Hannah called on the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) to resolve the long-standing contract issue involving national No. 1 women's doubles pair Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah, which has dragged on for more than six months. 'I'm not sure about the current status. Some reports say there's no decision yet, while others say Pearly-Thinaah are waiting for a response from BAM. So I hope BAM can find a solution quickly so it doesn't disrupt the athletes' preparations,' she added.

Goh-Izzuddin vow to maintain ranking and achieving big things this year
PETALING JAYA: Men's doubles shuttlers Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani believe their inclusion in the Road to Gold (RTG) programme is just the boost they need as they seek to maintain their world No. 1 ranking. Sze Fei-Izzuddin face a tough task to hold on to the top spot after a series of disappointing results but are fired up to improve their form after joining RTG which is an elite programme. Under RTG, they will get additional support services and allowances leading towards the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. 'We are honoured to join the Road to Gold programme for the first time,' said Sze Fei via social media. 'The additional support will help us greatly as we aim to maintain our ranking and achieve big things this year. The independent pair were included in the programme for the first time after their stunning performances last year and beginning of this year which propelled them to world No. 1. Sze Fei-Izzuddin captured the China Open, Japan Open and Arctic Open titles before finishing runners-up in the prestigious World Tour Finals last year. The duo then continued their fine form by winning the Indian Open in January but have not reached the semi-finals in any of their outings since. Sze Fei-Izzuddin have two big tournaments coming up next month - the back-to-back Japan Open from July 15-20 and China Open from July 22-27. The duo need to do well in both the tourneys to protect their ranking points from last year and maintain their No. 1 ranking. Sze Fei-Izzuddin's biggest challengers to the top spot seem to be fellow Malaysians Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, who are currently No. 2 in the world. The latter, who have been on fire since April, are keen to overtake the former and become No. 1 themselves for the first time. Aaron-Wooi Yik triumphed in the Asian Championships, Thailand Open and Singapore Open and finished runners-up to another national pair, world No. 7 Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun in the Malaysian Masters.
