Bone Collector Caterpillar Wears Body Parts of Dead Prey

In a remote and lushly forested area of a single mountain range on the Hawaiian island of Oahu, scientists have discovered a carnivorous caterpillar species that makes a living in such a macabre way that they have nicknamed it the 'bone collector.'
The caterpillar prowls spider webs to scavenge trapped and helpless victims such as ants, beetles, weevils and flies, the researchers said. The crafty caterpillar camouflages itself from the spider, which would happily eat it, by hiding its body inside a case it fashions from its own silk and adorns it with inedible body parts that it collected from the dead insects.
Through metamorphosis, this caterpillar eventually turns into its adult form, a moth with a brown and white coloration. Caterpillars are the moth's larval stage, with a segmented and worm-like body.
This is the world's only known caterpillar to live with and benefit from spiders, according to Daniel Rubinoff, a professor of entomology at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and lead author of the study published last month in the journal Science.
Its grisly behavior would seem well suited for a crime novel. But it represents an example of the creative paths that our planet's living organisms take to survive and thrive.
'They need to hide in a tapestry of bug parts to stay alive in the spider's lair,' Rubinoff said.
'I think it's actually a hero,' Rubinoff said. 'It truly lives 'in the lion's den,' hiding out with a spider and using the spider's web to provide it with food and probably shelter. The caterpillar will attack prey that can't get away but is itself very slow and bumbling, trailing a large [silk] case behind it.'
The caterpillars consume weakened or dead insects they encounter in webs spun by spiders in tree hollows and rock crevices.
'So it's probably getting the leftovers after the spider has fed,' Rubinoff said.
They even resort to cannibalism, attacking other caterpillars of the same species.
The 'Bone Collector' was the nickname of a serial killer in author Jeffery Deaver's 1997 novel 'The Bone Collector' and subsequent 1999 film of the same name.
So how did this caterpillar come to share this notorious nickname?
'I think the term is out there in the ether, and just fit with what these caterpillars are doing. It's a bit tongue in cheek because arthropods don't actually have bones,' Rubinoff said.
Arthropods are the massive assemblage of invertebrates that include insects and spiders, as well as crustaceans.
The researchers said the 'bone collector' inhabits a patch of mountain forest spanning just 15 square kilometers in the Waianae mountain range. Rubinoff said this caterpillar has a very precarious existence. Only 62 individuals have been observed in two decades of fieldwork.
'Invasive species are the main threat now. Even in protected areas, Hawaii is losing native species due to invasive species taking over habitats and turning them into biological deserts that look like forests but are largely unavailable to native species,' Rubinoff said.
The caterpillar, a previously unknown species, is a member of a group of moths called Hyposmocoma native to Hawaii that includes hundreds of species and arose about 12 million years ago. The researchers believe the 'bone collector' comes from a lineage more than 5 million years old.
The overwhelming majority of caterpillars eat vegetation. Predatory caterpillars globally comprise less than 0.13% of the planet's nearly 200,000 moth and butterfly species. And among those, the 'bone collector' is the only one known to find food the way it does, making it unique among the world's animals.
'The more we can understand how the world around us works, the better off we will be,' Rubinoff said.

The explosion occurred around 11 p.m. local time while Starship was on a test stand at its Brownsville, Texas Starbase while preparing for the tenth test flight, SpaceX said in a post on Musk's social-media platform X. The company attributed it to a "major anomaly" and said all personnel were safe. Its engineering teams were investigating the incident, and it was coordinating with local, state and federal agencies regarding environmental and safety impacts, the company said. "Preliminary data suggests that a nitrogen COPV in the payload bay failed below its proof pressure," Musk said in a post on X, in a reference to a nitrogen gas storage unit known as a Composite Overwrapped Pressure Vessel. "If further investigation confirms that this is what happened, it is the first time ever for this design," he continued. The Starship rocket appeared to experience at least two explosions in quick succession, lighting up the night sky and sending debris flying, according to video capturing the moment it exploded. The 400-foot (122-meter) tall Starship rocket system is at the core of Musk's goal of sending humans to Mars. But it has been beset by a string of failures this year. In late May, SpaceX's Starship rocket spun out of control about halfway through a flight without achieving some of its most important testing goals. The Starship lifted off from SpaceX's Starbase, Texas, launch site, flying beyond the point of two previous explosive attempts earlier this year that sent debris streaking over Caribbean islands and forced dozens of airliners to divert course. Two months earlier, the spacecraft exploded in space minutes after lifting off from Texas, prompting the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to halt air traffic in parts of Florida. Videos on social media showed fiery debris streaking through the dusk skies near South Florida and the Bahamas after Starship broke up in space shortly after it began to spin uncontrollably with its engines cut off, a SpaceX live stream of the mission showed. Musk called that explosion "a minor setback." The FAA said earlier this month that it had closed an agency-required investigation into the mishap, citing the probable cause as a hardware failure in one of the engines. SpaceX identified eight corrective actions to prevent a recurrence and the FAA said it verified SpaceX implemented those prior to the late May Starship mission. SINGAPORE (Reuters) — Unprecedented heat waves in the Southwest Pacific affected more than 10% of the global ocean surface in 2024, damaging coral reefs and putting the region's last remaining tropical glacier at risk of extinction, the U.N.'s weather body said on June 5. Average 2024 temperatures in the region — which covers Australia and New Zealand as well as southeast Asian island states like Indonesia and the Philippines — were nearly 0.5 C higher than the 1991-2020 mean, the World Meteorological Organization said in an annual report. 'Much of the region saw at least severe marine heat wave conditions at some point during the course of 2024, particularly in areas near and south of the equator,' said the WMO's Blair Trewin, one of the report's authors. Extreme heat over the year affected 40 million square kilometers of ocean, and new temperature highs were set in the Philippines and Australia, the report said. Ocean surface temperatures also broke records, while total ocean heat content was the second highest annual average, behind 2022. An unprecedented number of cyclones, which experts have attributed to climate change, also caused havoc in the Philippines in October and November. Sea levels continue to rise more quickly than the global average, an urgent problem in a region where more than half the population live within 500 meters of the coast, the report added. The report also cited satellite data showing that the region's sole tropical glacier, located in Indonesia on the western part of the island of New Guinea, shrank by up to 50% last year. 'Unfortunately, if this rate of loss continues, this glacier could be gone by 2026 or shortly thereafter,' said the WMO's Thea Turkington, another of the report's authors.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) — The Milky Way and the neighboring Andromeda galaxy are currently hurtling through space toward each other at a speed of about 400,000 kph, setting up a possible future galactic collision that would wreck both of them. But how likely is this cosmic crash? While previous research forecast it to occur roughly 4 billion-4.5 billion years from now, a new study that uses recent observational data and adds fresh variables indicates that a collision is far from certain. It puts the likelihood of a collision in the next 5 billion years at less than 2% and one in the next 10 billion years at about 50%. Galactic mergers are not like a demolition derby, with stars and planets crashing into each other, but rather a complicated blending on an immense scale. 'The future collision — if it happens — would be the end of both the Milky Way and Andromeda,' said University of Helsinki astrophysicist Till Sawala, lead author of the study published on June 2 in the journal Nature Astronomy, with the structure of both being destroyed and a new galaxy with an elliptical shape arising from the merger. 'If a merger happens, it is more likely to occur 7 billion-8 billion years in the future. But we find that based on the current data, we cannot predict the time of a merger, if it happens at all,' Sawala said. The two galaxies currently are around 2.5 million light-years from each other. The sun is one of the Milky Way's many billions of stars. The total mass of our spiral-shaped galaxy — including its stars and interstellar gas as well as its dark matter, which is invisible material whose presence is revealed by its gravitational effects — is estimated at approximately one trillion times the mass of the sun. The Andromeda galaxy has a shape and total mass similar to the Milky Way's. The researchers simulated the Milky Way's movement over the next 10 billion years using updated data from the Gaia and Hubble space telescopes and various ground-based telescopes as well as revised galactic mass estimates. Other nearby galaxies are forecast to factor into whether a collision occurs. Previous research accounted for the gravitational influence of the Triangulum galaxy, also called Messier 33 or M33, which is about half the size of the Milky Way and Andromeda, but did consider the Large Magellanic Cloud, a smaller satellite galaxy of the Milky Way, as this study does. 'We find that if only M33 is added to the two-body system, the chance of a Milky Way-Andromeda merger actually increases, but the inclusion of the Large Magellanic Cloud has the opposite effect,' Sawala said. The researchers concluded that a merger between the Milky Way and the Large Magellanic Cloud is almost certain within the next 2 billion years, long before a potential collision with Andromeda. One noteworthy difference between the Milky Way and Andromeda is the mass of the supermassive black holes at their centers. The Milky Way's Sagittarius A*, or Sgr A*, is about 4 million times the mass of the sun. Its Andromeda counterpart is about 100 million the sun's mass. 'Collisions between stars are very unlikely, but the two supermassive black holes would sink to the center of the newly formed galaxy, where they would eventually merge,' Sawala said. Galactic mergers have occurred since the universe's early stages and are particularly common in areas of the universe where galaxies are clustered together. 'In the early universe, galaxy mergers were much more frequent, so the first mergers would have occurred very shortly after the first galaxies had formed,' Sawala said. 'Minor mergers — with much smaller galaxies — happen more frequently. Indeed, the Milky Way is currently merging with several dwarf galaxies,' Sawala said.
