What's on: Nepal festival, Pride Festival, Double Exposure happening in Darwin
WHAT'S ON THIS WEEKEND
Another weekend, another fantastic food and culture festival to immerse yourself in! Darwin's multicultural heart is beating again as the Nepal Festival returns to the Waterfront today from midday. Expect traditional dances, crafts, and food stalls of course – with momos and dal bhat among the favourites!
The Pride Festival's Family Fun Day takes over Bicentennial Park today too, with live music, market stalls, face painting, and community performances celebrating inclusion and diversity.
And now that it's cool at night and you've been camping at least once this year (hopefully) you're likely to know exactly what you're missing, so you can head to the Darwin Convention Centre for the 4WD, Boating and Camping Expo across the weekend – for all the off-road vehicles, fishing gear and rooftop tents you'll ever need!
On Saturday make sure you come and join me at the Darwin Street Art Festival event DOUBLE EXPOSURE, at 7pm in the old RSL block carpark on Austin Lane.
It's our first projections event, and if you all come and check it out … maybe next year we will take on Vivid.
SOMEWHERE YOU NEED TO EAT
Have you ever missed lunch, and find yourself really hungry at 2.05pm – and all the cafes are closed? Surely that doesn't just happen to me? It's been a big few weeks of events, and Fat Tuna has come to the rescue many times!
I find myself reaching for easy but healthy options, so this little West Lane gem, right in the heart of the city and surrounded by amazing street art, is open from 11am - 8pm. A 2:30pm lunch? No worries. The team have done all the hard work for you and thought of the perfect tasty salad bowl ingredients – and they're just about to release a new chicken special to complement their Miss Jakson bowl: Mr Jakson is coming in hot! I can't wait to try it.
LOCALS TIP
I'm sure I am not the only one who has reached for their jumper and hot coffee a couple of times this week – and there isn't much I love more than a cool morning to actually exercise outdoors. What a luxury! My locals tip for you this week is to head to the Darwin Waterfront lawns on Saturday mornings at 8am, because they have free Yoga!
If you're looking for something a bit more endorphin building - another favourite is the East Point outdoor gym with a view, and a good one at that, which offers a range of body-weight focused exercises – or my favourite outdoor Darwin sweat session of all time: the Deckchair Stairs from the Esplanade down to the Deckchair Cinema. All 136 of them! Now is the time, my friends. Get out there!

Mister Bianco will carry the colours made famous by Winx when he looks to win the race named in her honour
Peter Tighe will now get a golden chance to win the Winx Guineas with a horse wearing the colours of his legendary champion. Winx's part-owner Tighe knows Mister Bianco is no Winx, but he was more than happy to win the $150,000 TL Cooney (1350m) at Ipswich as the three-year-old gelding made it a hat-trick of wins. Mister Bianco, which races in Tighe's Magic Bloodstock colours made famous by Winx, will now attack the Group 3 Winx Guineas over 1600m on the Sunshine Coast in a fortnight. In 2015, Winx won the race which was then known as the Sunshine Coast Guineas and it marked the start of the mighty mare's incredible 33-race winning streak. 'The Winx Guineas is on the table, I haven't won that race since we won it with Winx and in fact I haven't even had a runner in it since,' Tighe said. 'The idea was if he keeps improving, we would give it a crack. 'But I won't be on the Sunshine Coast for the Guineas, I am just about to head to America for a month so I will have to keep an eye on it from afar.' Mister Bianco started the $3.40 equal favourite at Ipswich and he and fellow betting pick Stay Focused settled down to fight it out from a long way out with Mister Bianco being stronger on the line. Andrew Mallyon scored a late pick-up ride on Mister Bianco after Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Michael Rodd fractured his hand at track work in Brisbane on Saturday morning. Three wins on the trot to Mister Bianco as he wins at @IpswichTurfClub today! ðŸ'ðŸ'ðŸ' @mallyon_andrew @RacingShailer @RaceQLD — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) June 21, 2025 'I feel for Michael Rodd who was meant to ride this horse,' Shailer said. 'He'll be out of play for a little bit but Andrew was a great replacement. He is familiar with the horse and has done a wonderful job. 'The penny is starting to drop with Mister Bianco and he is racing with confidence. 'Three months ago, he wouldn't have won that race. 'He would have found a way to get himself beaten so it is good that he's got that killer instinct about him and he was really good off what was a strong tempo today.' Meanwhile, Gold Coast trainer Adam Campton struck a blow at big odds when mare Zouperb ($17) won the BM80 Handicap (1100m). Campton had been considering aiming the five-year-old mare at the Gai Waterhouse Classic but instead opted for the easier assignment over the shorter trip. 'She was purchased online for $30,000 and she's now got a Saturday metro win next to her name,' Campton said. 'Around the turn I was quietly confident but I knew we had to chase down a couple of handy horses and I was seeing (runner-up) End Assembly coming late,' Campton said.

‘Shady' relationship act being called out by experts
A 'shady' dating trend rising in popularity is leaving Aussies feeling like their partner's dirty little secret. Partner pocketing, also known as stashing, is when your partner is keeping you a secret from the world, including not posting you on social media, not inviting you to events with family or friends, and appearing as though they are single. Samantha Jayne, a relationship expert, said the trend's been around for years but it has risen in popularity thanks to hook-up culture and more people feeling comfortable being single. She did also say that it could come from worry and shame from getting a relationship wrong, and so it is easier to keep it a secret in case the couple break up. While other times it's due to children being involved. It was common when people were trying to avoid judgement for factors like a big age gap or cultural differences. More 'malicious' reasons included a fear of commitment or cheating. 'No matter what the reason behind it, it never feels good to be someone's secret. It betrays trust, make the person who is being kept a secret feel same, insignificant and it errodes the relationship.,' she said. So, what should you do if you find yourself in this position of being confused about why your partner doesn't appear to be proud of dating you? 'Have an honest open conversation with your partner about the reasons you're being pocketed,' Ms Jayne said. 'You should see how that makes you feel and if you can compromise on a timeline so that you can eventually appear and be known to the outside world. I'd also recommend taking a step back and protecting yourself.' She said it's important to set a clear boundary, and if it makes you feel bad and the person isn't willing to compromise then maybe the relationship isn't for you. 'Know your self worth, practice self care and get out there meet new people that are proud of you and take the time to consider if being pocketed is something you are OK to accept,' she said. Sera Bozza, Tinder's local dating expert, told that on the surface partner pocketing sounds 'shady'. 'And sometimes? It is. If someone is making you feel like a well-kept secret, they might not be ready, or willing, to fully integrate you into their life. That hurts. But it doesn't always mean something's wrong with you,' she said. 'Because here's the thing: not everyone who isn't posting you is pocketing you. There's a difference. Not everyone's comfortable putting their love life on the grid two dates in — and that's fair! 'Privacy in the early stages can be healthy. Posting someone too soon doesn't prove commitment, especially if the connection hasn't earned that level of visibility yet. Rushing to perform commitment before you've actually built it? That's how people end up relationship-sprinting and emotionally crashing later.' She said the red flag isn't when someone introduces you but why they keep avoiding it. She said if someone is being clear and intentional about where things are at, it's a green flag. But. if they keep dodging the question or changing the subject. 'That's not mystery, that's misdirection,' she said. 'The good news? Gen Z daters are flipping the script. According to Tinder's Year in Swipe data, they're not pocketing; they're loud-looking from the start. They're not just hoping someone picks up the vibe, they're actively flagging what they want in their profiles for more aligned connections: effort they can see, communication that's direct, and actions that actually match their intentions. 'Being clear and emotionally available? In. Posting your partner when it feels real? In. Leaving someone in the emotional drafts folder: no introduction, no clarity, no context? Firmly out.'
