MTA donates RM50,000 to support UPSI bus crash victims
TANJONG MALIM: The Malaysian Takaful Association (MTA) has contributed RM50,000 to the Ministry of Higher Education's Prihatin Fund to support the families and students of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) affected by the recent bus crash in Gerik.
MTA chief executive officer Mohd Radzuan Mohamed said the funds were raised through contributions from corporate entities directly involved in the national takaful industry.
'We are deeply saddened by this tragedy. On behalf of the takaful industry, we extend our heartfelt condolences to all the families affected.
'This is a moment for unity. While we cannot undo what has happened, this contribution reflects our compassion and our commitment to serving the community,' he told Bernama at the UPSI students' bus tragedy memorial held at the Tuanku Canselor Hall last night.
Also present at the event were Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir, State Secretary Datuk Ahmad Suaidi Abdul Rahim, state executive councillor for Education, Higher Education, Youth and Sports Khairudin Abu Hanipah, and UPSI vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Md Amin Md Taff.
Mohd Radzuan noted that in addition to MTA, several takaful companies such as Etiqa Takaful, Syarikat Takaful Malaysia and Hong Leong MSIG Takaful Berhad also contributed to the Prihatin Fund.
The fund, established specifically to support the victims and families affected by the UPSI student bus crash in Gerik, has to date raised RM1.7 million in donations.
'Of that amount, 10 percent came from MTA and takaful companies directly involved in the industry. This reflects our commitment to the core takaful principle of mutual assistance, built on a foundation of community spirit and solidarity,' he said.
On June 9, 15 UPSI students were killed after a chartered bus traveling from Jertih, Terengganu, to the university's main campus in Tanjung Malim overturned following a collision with a Perodua Alza along the East-West Highway.
The crash also left 33 others injured, including the bus driver and assistant, as well as the driver and three passengers in the Perodua Alza.

JOHOR BAHRU: A private sector retiree lost RM535,766 after allegedly falling victim to an online investment scam promoted via an advertisement on the Facebook application. Seri Alam District Police chief ACP Mohd Sohaimi Ishak said the police received a report from a 57-year-old local man on Tuesday, who claimed losses exceeding RM500,000. He said the victim had come across a share investment advertisement on Facebook on March 13 that promised lucrative returns within a short time, and clicked on the provided link out of interest. 'Subsequently, the victim made 26 payment transactions into five different bank accounts between March 13 and June 5, totalling RM535,766. The victim was also asked to make additional payments to withdraw the so-called 'investment profits', but those requests were never fulfilled,' he said in a statement today. Mohd Sohaimi said the victim only realised he had been duped after repeated attempts to recover the investment funds proved futile. 'Preliminary checks via the CCID's 'Semak Mule' platform found that all five accounts involved had a total of 22 police reports linked to investment scams,' he said. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, and police are also looking into the possible involvement of mule account holders.

Gurdwara Sahib Miri gets RM500,000 Unifor boost for renovation works

MIRI (June 21): Gurdwara Sahib Miri has received an allocation of RM500,000 from the Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) to support its ongoing renovation works. The cheque was handed over by State Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Sebastian Ting during a brief ceremony at the temple yesterday. In his remarks, the Piasau assemblyman also reminded recipients to utilise the allocation without delay and to ensure that all costs and expenditures would be properly documented. 'Make sure to use the funds and report what has been done, so there is a proper record. 'If everything is in order, it will be easier for them (Unifor) to consider future applications,' he advised. The Sikh community in Miri has roots dating back to the 1880s, with the original 'gurdwara' (Sikh temple) built in 1919, and the current building completed in 1975. Today, it continues to serve as a place of worship and learning for the Sikh families in the area. According to the project director Gurvir Singh Sandhu, the current upgrading initiative was approved in 2021, with physical works kicking off in 2022. 'The renovation works are now about 80 per cent complete and are expected to finish by early July,' said Gurvir. Among the new features being introduced are Dayak-inspired motifs on the glass panels by the entrance, reflecting the community's appreciation for local cultures and Sarawak's multi-ethnic landscape. Perlis forms task force to curb RM1.5m revenue leakage
KANGAR: A special task force led by Perlis state secretary Datuk Rahimi Ismail has been formed to address revenue leakages related to the rental of state land and buildings. Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli said the task force is responsible for identifying and collecting data on premises and assets involved in the leakages, as well as coordinating actions to ensure that lost revenue can be recovered. 'Among the task force's early achievements is identifying revenue leakages involving four departments/agencies. Through these initial actions, the total leakage identified has reached RM1.5 million. '...with an estimated RM800,000 expected to be recovered by the end of 2025. This effort will continue to involve other departments,' he said during the monthly assembly of the state administration here today. Mohd Shukri said the task force is also in the process of preparing a Premises Usage Management Guideline, which has been reviewed by the State Legal Adviser's Office and is now being examined by the Perlis State Land and Mines Office (PTG) for feedback. Mohd Shukri said the task force was formed following a January audit committee meeting that called for immediate action to ensure rental income from state-owned properties collected by third parties is returned to the state. Issues related to the rental of state land and buildings include activities conducted without valid contracts or agreements, violations of existing regulations, encroachments on government-owned land and the rental of assets that do not provide reasonable returns to the state, he added. 'This situation not only causes revenue loss but also reflects non-compliance with the laws and regulations in place,' he said.
