QRDI Council conclude Third Innovation Day at the Fifth Qatar Economic Forum
Doha, Qatar: Qatar Research, Development, and Innovation (QRDI) Council hosted its third consecutive Innovation Day, on the final day of the 5th Qatar Economic Forum. Innovation Day served as a dedicated platform featuring a dynamic lineup of expert panels, strategic discussions, and interactive sessions aimed at encouraging collaboration and advancing innovation.
Omar Al Ansari, Secretary General at QRDI Council said: 'Innovation Day has become a staple of QRDI Council's efforts to encourage collaboration, spark dialogue, and drive forward Qatar's innovation agenda. This year's event highlighted the critical role of artificial intelligence and emerging technologies in shaping the future of industries and economies, not just in Qatar but globally. As we reflect on the outcomes of this year's Innovation Day, I am confident that the insights gained, and the partnerships made will play an important role in advancing our shared vision of a sustainable, innovation-driven future.'
The Innovation Day began with an opening address by QRDI Council's Secretary General, Omar Al-Ansari, who reflected on last year's discussions surrounding the ethics of innovation, and how these questions remain highly relevant today; setting the tone for conversations that unfolded throughout the day. Throughout his address, he provided a broad perspective on the GCC region, emphasizing that innovation is not merely a concept but an active, operational reality. He highlighted Qatar's strong commitment to advancing innovation, driven by two key national frameworks: the Qatar National Vision 2030 and the Third National Development Strategy. Whilst also outlining the role of the QRDI Council, noting that while the Council does not position itself as the sole hub of innovation, it serves as a strategic enabler and bridge, facilitating progress across sectors.
Following a morning filled with engaging discussions and activities, the event transitioned into two breakout sessions: 'AI IRL: From Innovation to Application' and 'The Venture Capital Outlook.' Both sessions saw participants actively engaging in meaningful dialogue, networking opportunities, and the day's initiatives.
Key topics included the future of biotech, explored in a conversation with James Flynn, Managing Partner at Deerfield, as well as AI in action, focusing on practical applications of innovation within the GCC region to drive impactful outcomes. Additionally, the future of AI in the region was explored during the session "Qatar – Realizing AI's Potential Today," highlighting how Qatar's technology leaders are driving growth and connectivity through innovative applications.
Innovation Day is a strategic initiative that reflects QRDI Council's dedication to advancing Qatar's National Vision 2030 and its National Development Strategy. By fostering collaboration, promoting advanced research, and exploring transformative technologies like AI and biotech, the event shows Qatar's commitment to building a diversified, knowledge-based economy.

GCC tourism spending projected to hit $223.7 bn by 2034
The Statistical Centre for the Cooperation Council for the Arab Countries of the Gulf (GCC-Stat) has released data showing visitor spending in GCC countries is expected to reach $223.7 billion by 2034. The projections indicate that incoming visitor spending will contribute 13.4 percent to total exports by 2034, according to a statement by the Emirates News Agency (WAM), which cited the Centre's latest analysis. All GCC member states scored above the regional average of 5.86 points on the index, which operates on a scale from 1 to 7 points. GCC countries have also achieved recognition for passport strength, with all six nations ranking among the top performers in the Arab region for passport power. The Centre's data highlights the tourism sector's growing contribution to the GCC economy, with visitor spending showing recovery and growth following the 2019 baseline period.

Jordan Source strengthens tech and investment ties in Europe with an official delegation to Germany
A high-level delegation from Jordan Source, representing the Ministry of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship (MoDEE), continued the program's efforts to activate collaboration, transfer knowledge, and build bridges between Jordan and European innovation powerhouses, spearheading an official visit to Germany. The delegation, which included 16 representatives from both public and private sectors, focused on attracting foreign investment and showcasing Jordan's growing capabilities in the ICT and outsourcing industries. Led by MoDEE officials, the business delegation featured representatives from the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Supply (MoITS) and Jordan Export. The government officials were accompanied by leaders from prominent Jordanian tech companies, which included CEOs and founders Alaa Muqattash of Advanced Business Solutions (ABS); Ahmad Bourini of Denamica; Yazan Tadros of EduHax; Zaidoun Karadsheh of Media Plus and BeeLabs; Omar Asa'd of SmartEye; and Faris Aloul of Vamu. Each of these companies corresponded to Jordan Source's strategic focus areas, including cybersecurity, gaming, information technology outsourcing (ITO), business processing outsourcing (BPO), education technology, and creative industries. Held from 3rd to 9th of May, the visit was organized by Jordan Source with support from MoITS and the Innovative Private Sector Development Approaches for Employment Promotion (I-PSD) project, implemented by GIZ on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). This collaboration, further supported by Gateway Jordan—led by Oliver Gerbert—and the Saarland Economic Promotion Corporation, aimed to ensure comprehensive access to key stakeholders and innovation hubs across Germany, thereby maximizing opportunities for impactful engagements and the establishment of valuable connections. The delegation kicked off their activities in Berlin (3–7 May) with a visit to the Startup Unit of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) to explore Germany's startup support models and exchange insights on digital innovation. The delegation then continued to engage with the German Startups Association in an open discussion on ecosystem building, data-driven policymaking, and startup advocacy, gaining deeper insights into how the association supports over 1,200 members across all levels and regions. Furthermore, the trip to Berlin explored joint investments between Jordan and Germany in future-ready skills and workforce developments. The delegation shared its vision and innovations in digital learning with the Digital Education Lab (DEL) by the Berlin Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK), as well as Christiani Competence Centres, opening the doors for collaboration in digital and vocational education. Wrapping up the first part of the official visit, Jordan Source met with RESPOND Accelerator by BMW Foundation for an exchange on impact-driven startups and leaders shaping the future of sustainable innovation. Upon landing in Saarbrücken (7–9 May), the Jordan Source delegation strategically aimed to establish high-level connections and showcase Jordan's tech sector. A key briefing with the Saarland Economic Promotion Corporation introduced Jordan's leading technology companies to the European stage, laying the groundwork for future collaborations and highlighting mutual economic opportunities. The delegation also dedicated significant time to exploring the forefront of German research and innovation. Visits to leading institutions such as DFKI, specializing in advanced AI, and the dynamic innovation hub at Universität des Saarlandes provided invaluable insights into cutting-edge technologies and the synergy between academia and entrepreneurship. These engagements aimed to foster potential avenues for joint research, knowledge exchange, and the adoption of best practices. Furthermore, the delegation immersed itself in Saarbrücken's vibrant innovation ecosystem to identify concrete collaboration opportunities and strategic alliances. Parallel discussions with The August-Wilhelm Scheer Institute and Dehub AI focused on leveraging digital transformation and applied AI to enhance Jordan's role in the global tech value chain, actively seeking tangible partnerships for long-term growth and mutual benefit. WCM-Q concludes 2025 cycle of biomedical research training program
Doha – Four aspiring biomedical scientists have gained key research skills by completing the 2025 cycle of Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar's (WCM-Q) Biomedical Research Training Program (BRTP) for Nationals. The interns who participated in this year's program are Raghad Rabie El Ghali, Hadeel Alashwal, Maryam Ali, and Sara Muhamed Saleh. The program is designed to give Qatari nationals and long-term residents who have recently graduated from college a firm foundation in practical laboratory and research administration skills, and experience conducting real clinical research projects while working alongside WCM-Q's highly qualified scientific faculty in the college's state-of-the-art laboratories. To celebrate their successful completion of the program, the interns were presented with certificates at a special graduation ceremony. This year marks the 13th annual cycle of the Biomedical Research Training Program for Nationals, which was launched in 2011. To date, the program has helped 62 graduates, including this year's cohort, take their first steps toward successful careers in research. Dr. Khaled Machaca, professor of physiology and biophysics/senior associate dean for research, innovations, and commercialization at WCM-Q, said: 'I am honored to congratulate our latest cohort of talented graduates from the Biomedical Research Training Program. These impressive young scientists have dedicated the last 10 months to acquiring the skills and knowledge needed to become not only exceptional scientists but also vital contributors to Qatar's thriving biomedical research sector. I wish them every success in the next stages of their careers.' This year's BRTP interns are graduates of Hamad Bin Khalifa University, Qatar University, the University of Zhengzhou in China, and the International Medical University in Malaysia. Tembela Eweje, associate director, grants, contracts and research training, said: 'This program is more than just training; it's about building a diverse and capable biomedical workforce for Qatar. The program is designed to equip emerging scientists with critical skills and provide the mentorship they need for their careers after completion. During the graduation ceremony, our trainees expressed their excitement about the future and their eagerness to engage in activities that will help them gain the expertise needed to lead transformative research. One trainee mentioned that the program provided them with what they would equate to about 10 years of experience in just 10 months.' The program has become an established bridge for college graduates to transition to the workplace and kickstart successful careers in research. Graduates from previous cycles have gone on to publish in leading journals and have been accepted to graduate school programs in Qatar and abroad, while others have established careers in research at prestigious institutions across Qatar and the region.
