Pandelela clears injury hurdle ahead of World trials
KUALA LUMPUR: Pandelela Rinong is expected to recover in time for next month's national diving trials, easing fears she might miss out.
The two-time Olympic medallist suffered a tricep muscle strain during warm-up at the Diving World Cup in Windsor, Canada, two weeks ago, sparking concerns over her availability.
But Malaysia Aquatics technical director Yeoh Ken Nee has confirmed the injury is not serious.
"It's not really an injury, just a muscle strain," said Ken Nee.
"She's been undergoing rehab and has rejoined the national team. We expect her to resume full training this week.
"There's a strong possibility that she'll compete in the trials."
The national trials will be held at the National Aquatics Centre in Bukit Jalil on May 9-11 and will decide the national squad for the World Championships in Singapore (July 11-Aug 3) and the Thailand Sea Games (Dec 7-19).

Fleetwood, Thomas and Scheffler share PGA Travelers lead
NEW YORK: England's Tommy Fleetwood made two eagles and a birdie in the last six holes Friday to grab a share of the lead with top-ranked Scottie Scheffler and Justin Thomas at the PGA Travelers Championship. Thomas reeled off five consecutive birdies in firing a six-under par 64 while Fleetwood shot 65 and Scheffler fired a 69 to all stand on nine-under 131 for 36 holes at windy TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut. Paris Olympic runner-up Fleetwood, ranked 17th, matched his season-low round. He has seven European Tour wins but seeks his first PGA Tour victory. Fleetwood eagled the par-five 13th after reaching the green in two and sinking a putt from just inside 10 feet, then chipped in at the par-four 14th for eagle from the fairway from just inside 90 feet. "Would have been happy walking off with two birdies," Fleetwood said. "But two eagles was a big bonus." A 12-foot birdie putt at the par-three 16th gave him a share of the lead. "It happened really quick. You don't expect two eagles in three holes," he said. "You don't really look for those things to happen. "I played really well. Felt like I did a great job of scrapping on the front nine then played well on the back nine." Fifth-ranked Thomas, a two-time major winner, opened the back nine with a bogey then birdied the next five holes. The last two in the run, at the 14th and 15th, were from just beyond 26 feet each. "I was very patient. I hit a lot of really good iron shots. I felt like I was in good control," Thomas said. "I didn't feel like I drove it very well. I kept it in play and kept it in front of me, which is a big part of it, but I just kept it out of trouble. Finally made some putts on that back nine. It was nice." Scheffler, who won his third major title at last month's PGA Championship, stumbled back with a double bogey at 17, plunking his second shot into the water. "I played really nice," Scheffler said. "Had a weird lie on the second shot and kind of chunked it. After that I hit each shot the way I wanted, just didn't get the results from it. "Outside of that, I felt like I played pretty well. It was very challenging out there with the wind gusts." Scheffler made a bogey at the par-five sixth after missing the green with his approach but responded with birdies at the seventh on a putt from just inside seven feet and the ninth from just inside 10 feet. At the par-five 13th, Scheffler reached the green in two and two-putted for birdie from 24 feet to grab the solo lead, then sank a birdie putt from just inside 17 feet. Australian Jason Day, the 2015 PGA Championship winner, made three birdies in a row on holes 12-14 – all on putts between four and eight feet – and closed with a 21-foot birdie putt to shoot 66 and take fourth on 132. "There's 40-mph gusts out there," Day said. "You had to hit on the right wind." Americans Denny McCarthy and Austin Eckroat shared fifth on 133. World number two Rory McIlroy made bogeys on three of the first four holes then made birdies on three of the first six on the back nine as he battled to a 71 to stand on 135. "I hit some good shots and held it together when it could have got away from me early in the round," McIlroy said. "I felt like I battled back pretty well.

Herry needs masseurs under RTG to knead shuttlers to success
PETALING JAYA: Athletes under the elite Road to Gold (RTG) programme are entitled to request anything that can help boost their performance and for men's doubles head coach Herry Iman Pierngadi, that means asking for more masseurs. Herry knows that a relaxed body can reduce stress, anxiety and enhance performance. The former Indonesia coaching legend currently oversees two pairs in the RTG programme, world No. 2 Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and rising duo Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun. The Indonesian coach admitted that the current number of masseurs is insufficient, especially during tournaments, as players often have to wait their turn and share with other teammates. As such, Herry hopes at least two more masseurs can be added to the support team to ease the workload, particularly during overseas competitions. 'I'd like to thank RTG for their support so far. But going forward, we do need more masseurs. ''We have many players competing at each tournament, and having only one or two masseurs isn't enough,' said Herry. 'If we could get two additional masseurs, that would really help. ''They're human too, they use a lot of energy and get tired after treating so many players.' Herry also expressed hopes for more supplements and vitamins to be provided for Aaron-Wooi Yik and Wei Chong-Kai Wun. 'Right now, they are already taking some supplements, but every athlete has different needs. ''It would be ideal if they could receive additional vitamins tailored to their individual requirements,' he added. In addition to the two men's doubles pairs, the RTG programme also includes women's duo Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah and mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei. More recently, two top professional pairings have also come on board, world No. 1 men's doubles pair Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani and experienced mixed doubles duo Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie. Beyond badminton, the RTG roster features national track cyclists Shah Firdaus Sahrom and Nur Izzah Izzati Asri, weightlifter Mohd Aniq Kasdan, and squash star S. Sivasangari. RTG initiative was launched to provide targeted support for elite athletes with the potential to deliver Malaysia's long-awaited first Olympic gold medal at the 2028 Los Angeles Games.

Herry challenges Aaron-Soh to grab world No. 1 spot with good shows in Japan, China
New goal: Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik are currently ranked second in the world. — IZZRAFIQ ALIAS/The Star PETALING JAYA: Go for world No. 1. Men's doubles coach Herry Iman Pierngadi has challenged shuttlers Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik to reach the top ranking for the first time before the World Championships from Aug 25-31 in Paris. Currently at No. 2, Aaron-Wooi Yik have a chance to overtake fellow Malaysians Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani for the top spot when they compete next in the back-to-back Japan Open from July 15-20 and China Open from July 22-27. The former are breathing down the independent pair's necks with 89,870 ranking points compared to the latter, who have 91,090 points. Herry has urged Aaron-Wooi Yik to take this opportunity to finally achieve the elusive milestone in their careers and give themselves a huge boost before the prestigious world meet. 'For me, it's important for Aaron-Wooi Yik to become world No. 1 before the world meet,' said Herry after overseeing a training session at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara yesterday. 'If they can achieve this, then it will be good as it will give them a better seeding in the tournament. 'They have a chance and this (becoming world No. 1) has been one of their personal targets.' Based on their hot form since April under Herry's guidance, Aaron-Wooi Yik have a good opportunity to overtake Sze Fei-Izzuddin. The 2022 world champions captured the Asian Championships, Thailand Open and Singapore Open titles and finished runners-up to world No. 7 teammates Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun in the Malaysian Masters. Meanwhile, Sze Fei-Izzuddin, who became world No. 1 last month, have struggled for consistency this year. The pair captured the Indian Open in January but failed to reach the semi-finals in all their outings since their triumph. Sze Fei-Izzuddin also face a fight to hold on to their top spot as they won both the Japan and China Opens last year and need to do well this year too to protect their ranking points. Aaron-Wooi Yik on the other hand missed both the tourneys last year due to the latter's toe injury and do not have to worry about defending any points. The draw for the Japan Open which will be held in Tokyo will be released on July 8.
