
Edfundo warns UAE's youth of the Finfluencer reality during Global Money Week March 17-23, 2025
Dubai, UAE – The #EducationFirst commitment behind Edfundo, the UAE's first money management app for kids & teens is the driver of this year's participation in Global Money Week (GMW)), with the theme "Think before you follow, wise money tomorrow," to help youngsters make informed money decisions when interacting online.
'This year, GMW and Edfundo are placing the spotlight on the rise of the Finfluencer,' said Simon Wing, Edfundo's Co-founder and CEO, stressing the need for children to receive financial education from an early age as digital finance and Artificial Intelligence become a way of life.
Wing explains that a Finfluencer is a financial influencer who offers advice and information on various financial topics, usually through social media platforms: 'These topics can include saving, investing, cryptocurrency, and sometimes even ways to get rich quickly—all tempting topics for teens.'
Wing and his Co-Founder & COO, Andrew Toward, are both teachers who understand how youngsters learn, making Edfundo the world's first teacher-built money management platform for families.
Toward shared more on the rise of Finfluencers and why parents and teachers should be cautious: "Following the Influencer trend, Finfluencers leverage their popularity or cultural status to sway the financial decision-making process of their followers by promoting or recommending financial products and services.
"It's true that the content can provide engaging and accessible financial tips, but most often the finfluencer lacks the necessary qualifications or regulatory oversight to offer sound financial advice leading to the promotion of risky or unsuitable financial products and ways to spend in this cashless society that our youngsters are all too familiar with."
Edfundo has also scored another first by on-boarding a 16-year-old as Head of Youth Empowerment. Shaurrya Choudhary is Edfundo's champion behind many youth-led activities in schools throughout Dubai and is delivering workshops throughout the week.
"Looking through the lens of young people, I understand the challenges my peers face when it comes to identifying good sources of information and managing money.
'Edfundo's goal is to make financial education relatable and practical and to red flag that finfluencer content especially must be checked and verified. For example, if something is being offered for free, it is highly likely that money will be taken from you in another way."
The 13th edition of Global Money Week, organised by the OECD International Network on Financial Education, runs through to March 23, 2025 in more than 150 countries worldwide, including the UAE. Since its launch in 2012, 177 countries have participated, reaching more than 60 million children and young people.

Vulnerability to Misinformation: Teenagers, particularly those aged 11-15, are vulnerable to misinformation and risky financial advice from finfluencers. Many finfluencers lack the necessary qualifications or regulatory oversight to offer sound financial advice.

Shoulder Surfing
Global Prevalence: Shoulder surfing is a common occurrence in public places, especially in crowded environments. According to a survey, 130 out of every 193 shoulder surfing cases occur on public transport.
Devices Targeted: A significant majority of shoulder surfing incidents—89.7%—involve smartphones.
Ease of Attack: Patterns used to unlock mobile devices are generally easier to shoulder surf and comprehend quickly than PINs and passwords. In a 2019 experiment, 64.2% of participants could uncover a 6-point pattern within a single observation.
Impact: Shoulder surfing can lead to significant financial losses. For example, in May 2023, a shoulder surfing victim in the UK lost £70,000 after being observed in a busy public place.

What started as a way to keep an eye on him soon became a powerful tool that opened a new world of possibilities. She also founded the Mindanao Hong Kong Workers Federation, where she helped fellow OFWs and grew passionate about empowering women through community and technology. A dream fulfilled back home When her daughters graduated college, Myrna returned to the Philippines and launched Mynd Consulting, a small outsourcing company that began with just two staff and one old computer. Ministry of Family celebrates graduation of 50 students
Dubai – Her Excellency Sana Suhail, Minister of Family, honoured 50 graduates from disability care and rehabilitation centres for people of determination during an inspiring graduation ceremony held yesterday at the Cultural Centre in Ajman. For the first time, this event brought together students from the centres for people of determination across Dubai, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, and Dibba Fujairah, along with students from the "Mashaghel Rehabilitation Centers " vocational training programme, celebrating their perseverance and remarkable achievements. Through their academic and professional journeys, these individuals have become inspiring examples of willpower and dedication. In her speech during the ceremony, Her Excellency praised the graduates for their determination and commitment. Driving through barriers: Joan Kaitesi's journey on male-dominated roads
In the heart of Uganda's capital, 35-year-old Joan Kaitesi navigates the city's infamous traffic jams with calm determination. As a driver for the World Health Organization (WHO) Uganda country office, Joan's professionalism shines through the daily chaos of blaring horns and impatient road users. From a young age, Joan was captivated by vehicles. Inspired by action films and a childhood dream of driving tanks in war zones, Joan's fascination with big vehicles set her apart. While society often labelled her interests as 'masculine,' Joan remained steadfast, determined to forge a path in a field traditionally dominated by men. 'Being one of the older children at home, I had to act as a role model to my siblings in a challenging environment. This pushed me to work hard and never despise any job, including roles commonly reserved for men, which led me to join the driving discipline,' shares Joan, the second-born in a family of six (three girls and three boys). Her professional journey began in 2015 at the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI), where she stood out as the only female among 15 applicants. Despite initial intimidation, Joan's skills and determination earned her the role, making her the first female driver at IDI. She later joined Chemonics International for five years, and then UN Women, where she expanded her responsibilities to include assisting expatriates with documentation and protocol duties. In October 2024, Joan joined WHO Uganda during a polio immunization campaign, becoming the second female driver at the country office. Joan's journey has not been without obstacles. She has faced gender stereotypes and skepticism from male colleagues and road users alike. Yet, she has consistently proven her capabilities through quick decision-making, time management, and a strong commitment to safety and professionalism. One of her most memorable moments came in 2021, during a circumcision campaign in Karamoja. When a nurse was suddenly unavailable due to an emergency, Joan stepped in to assist, showcasing her adaptability and dedication to service. Joan draws inspiration from trailblazing Ugandan women such as Justice Julia Sebutinde of the International Court of Justice and Jennifer Musisi, the first Executive Director of Kampala Capital City Authority. These role models have shown her that women can thrive in male-dominated spaces. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Transport and Logistics Management from Makerere University Business School, along with training in 4x4 defensive driving, first aid, and other relevant skills. Currently, Joan is pursuing further education in the same field, with the goal of becoming a fleet officer. She encourages young women to be resilient, professional, and open to continuous learning. Outside of work, Joan is a passionate advocate for healthy living. She works out three to four times a week and enjoys dancing, whether there's music or not.
