Iraq enters Arab nuclear emergency group over worries of radiological impact
Baghdad ( – The nuclear regulatory body in Iraq announced on Wednesday the establishment of a united Arab crisis cell aiming to prepare for potential nuclear emergencies. This initiative comes in response to escalating regional tensions regarding possible US strikes on nuclear sites in Iran. The effort, which involves regulatory authorities from around the Arab world, was formally launched during a virtual conference presided over by the Director-General of the Arab Atomic Energy Agency, Salem Al-Hamdi, according to a statement cited by the Iraqi News Agency (INA). Iraq is represented by Deputy Director of the National Authority for Nuclear, Radiological, Chemical, and Biological Control and Chairperson of the Arab Network of Nuclear Regulatory Bodies (ANNuR), Sabah Al-Husseini. Officials from Jordan, Lebanon, Yemen, Kuwait, Libya, Bahrain, Tunisia, and Sudan attending the meeting decided to set up a regional operations center to allow immediate tracking and crisis communication. The initiative will provide prompt notification and coordination for any unusual radiation levels. The step follows concerns that Israel or the United States may strike Iranian nuclear facilities, which are less than 1,000 kilometers from Baghdad and even closer to major cities in the Kurdistan region of Iraq.

Iraq to set up new cement plants producing 52 million tons annually
Baghdad ( – The Iraqi Ministry of Industry and Minerals revealed on Tuesday that it is developing a plan to set up new cement factories with a production capacity of 52 million tons annually. The spokesperson for the Ministry of Industry and Minerals, Doha Al-Jabouri, told the Iraqi News Agency (INA) that Iraq's cement factories, both associated with the Ministry of Industry and Minerals and the private sector, are currently producing 32 million tons annually. The Iraqi government has developed a strategy to enhance cement production capacity in response to growing demand and ongoing construction projects in Iraq, as well as to fulfill current and future demands, according to Al-Jabouri. The Iraqi official indicated that the ministry's plan also offers opportunities to develop integrated cement factories with a production capacity of 52 million tons per year. The Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, launched in April six large-scale cement factories worth $1.171 billion in the southern Iraqi province of Muthanna. According to a statement released by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), Al-Sudani initiated commercial operations at Najmat Al-Samawa Cement Plant 2, which produces 6,000 tons per day. Al-Sudani launched construction works for the Al-Arabi Cement Plant, the Khairat Al-Muthanna Cement Plant, and the Al-Ittihad Cement Plant, each with a capacity of 6,000 tons per day. Additionally, Al-Sudani launched the construction works for the Al-Samawa Cement Plant with an output capacity of 6,600 tons per day and a 1,200-tons-per-day caustic soda project. Given the numerous development projects requiring various types of construction materials, Al-Sudani emphasized that the primary goal of the current initiatives is to meet the needs of the local market and eliminate imports.

Iraq qualified to be regional financial center
Baghdad ( – The prime minister's financial advisor, Mazhar Salih, revealed on Sunday that Iraq is qualified to be a regional financial center. In a statement to the Iraqi News Agency (INA), Salih explained that Iraq is the second-largest oil producer in the Middle East and has the world's fourth-largest oil reserves, allowing the country to play a leading role in the global energy market given its large financial surpluses that can be directed toward investments in financial infrastructure. Iraq's foreign reserves surpass $100 billion, giving the country a considerable financial safety cushion, trust in monetary stability, and strong financial investment appeal, according to Salih. The Iraqi official indicated that Iraq's unique geographic location, which serves as a critical corridor connecting the world, provides an open economic space for global markets and their commercial interactions, with links creating an important climate for regional financial markets, especially with the country's strategic project of the Development Road, which will connect Europe and the Gulf. Iraq's human resources, with 60 percent under the age of 30, are capable of undergoing training in financial technology, banking innovation, digital technology, and artificial intelligence, according to Salih. Additionally, given that the state-owned banks are controlling more than 80 percent of the country's banking activities, the reform campaign led by the Iraqi government aims to transform Iraq into a global financial center.
