Everything Texas A&M HC Mike Elko said during Wednesday's Houston Coach's Night
Texas A&M's 2025 football season is getting closer by the day, as the Aggies will kick off the new campaign against UTSA in Kyle Field on Saturday, August 31. This offseason, second-year head coach Mike Elko has made the media rounds, and is currently finishing out the annual Coach's Night circuit, which continued on Wednesday night in Houston.
Expectations remain high for an Aggie roster filled with talent and experience at every level, and while half of the fan base is still skeptical of the team's progress, Elko is supremely confident that his team is on the right track, as he continued to praise several offensive and defensive leaders, including starting quarterback Marcel Reed and junior linebacker Taurean York.
Littered with locker room leadership, it's the play on the field that matters most, so it's fair for the skeptics to continue shouting internally, or externally that offseason quotes are "meaningless" despite Elko's authenticity and honesty compared to former head coach Jimbo Fisher.
As the countdown to the 2025 season continues to tick down, here is everything Mike Elko had to say during Wednesday's Houston Coach's Night.
Mike Elko on Texas A&M's improvement on defense before taking over as the defensive play-caller.
"Everybody keeps asking me that - yes, we will be better on defense."
Mike Elko compared Texas A&M's 2025 O-line to the memorable 2020 offensive line.
"I think that is what we have this year."
Mike Elko on how freshman DE Marco Jones will balance playing football and baseball.
"down-the-road conversation," but Jones participated in some of the baseball scrimmages before the season and will be "pretty much exclusively football" this fall.
Mike Elko briefly reflects on his first season with the program
When I look back on everything that has been done in our first year at Texas A&M, it was a foundational year. That's how I would describe it."
"We felt the first thing we had to do as a staff was establish a culture. We wanted to build a program that resembles this great university."
Mike Elko on how he views Texas A&M's football future
"Where this program is going? It's pointed to the sky. We talk about the indicators that show success. Retention is a big part of it… We are proud of keeping all of our coaches and 16 starters."
Mike Elko on the 2025 roster's veteran leadership
"We have 23 kids on our roster who will play their last year of college football. We are an older roster."
Mike Elko on the team's offensive strengths in the trenches
"If you think back to the core of the 2020 football team, the offensive line is where it all started. We bring back all four tailbacks. That is not something you see all the time."
Mike Elko provided an update that RB Le'Veon Moss "got some work in" on Monday.
Mike Elko is well acquainted with new WR KC Concepcion, who he faced during his two-year coaching career at Duke.
"I played against him his freshman year when I was at Duke. He has been a really mature kid. He has that captain make-up."
"Mario Craver came from Mississippi State. If you ask our corners, he is the toughest one they covered last year."
Mike Elko's confidence in QB Marcel Reed continued on Wednesday.
"We are really excited about him. He can make plays with his arm and his feet."
"I think you will see him take a really, really big step forward."
Mike Elko on LB Scooby Williams playing through his meniscus tear during the entire 2024 season.
"Scooby Williams tore his meniscus on the first drive of the first game last year. It was the same play Dalton Brooks got ejected. You didn't see the best of Scooby."
Mike Elko on his fiery postgame comments after Texas A&M's bowl game loss to USC.
"We didn't meet my or our standard for what defense should look like. Part of that is Year 1. Part of that is the Tyreek Chappell injury, so we had to play more zone. Part of it is coaching it and the players doing it."
Mike Elko on if NIL has changed his coaching methods
"Not at all. I made a decision when this started that I wasn't going to coach differently. We have established a standard for how you should act and behave."
Mike Elko (asked by a fan in the audience) on playing Texas this year on Black Friday.
"I will say this. Our team is very excited for that Friday night across the state. We will leave it at that."
Mike Elko on the state of Texas A&M recruiting.
"We are still very committed to bringing in a large high school class every year, around 24 to 26 guys. We still go through the recruiting process the way we always have."
Mike Elko on what he believes will take Texas A&M to the "next level."
"It's NFL talent. The amount of talent you have will be measured by the number of draft picks you have. The last seven to eight years, it's not comparative. For us to get where we want to go, that has to happen."
Mike Elko with the quote of the night to end Wednesday's event.
"I think this is really important. Our goal is to build the best program we are capable of being… When we do that, it won't matter who we play or who is in the SEC. No one will be able to stop us."

Texas A&M Softball adds depth, eyes return to host Regionals in 2026

Texas A&M's softball season came to an abrupt end in the Bryan-College Station Regional, despite being picked as one of the favorites to reach the NCAA Women's College World Series. To add insult to injury, SEC newcomer Texas won its first World Series in program history while A&M watched from home. After some time for reflection, which Coach Ford admitted was difficult, she knew she needed to hit the portal to replace lost production and solidify the infield. In a surprise to fans, Texas A&M star utility player Amari Harper entered the portal for her final season. Harper, one of the last recruits from Jo Evans who remained after Ford took over, understandably wanted to test the waters. Outside of Harper, the Aggies had a relatively quiet portal season with only a few departures. Coach Ford, however, is focused on improvement, bringing in a handful of talented players that include an NCAA career leader in saves and a Golden Glove winner. Below are the current transfers Aggie fans can expect to see at Davis Diamond for the 2026 season. Taylor Pannell - LHP - Missouri Micaela Wark - DP/IF - Oklahoma State Tallen Edwards - UTL - Oklahoma State Maya Bland - OF - Oklahoma Paislie Allen - IF - Georgia This is an absolute haul by Coach Ford, addressing several key needs. If she can add one more pitcher, this group could be viewed as the perfect core to help the Aggies return to regional host status and potentially fuel another run at a Women's College World Series appearance. Texas A&M Learns Start Times, Windows for Full SEC Schedule

Texas A&M Learns Start Times, Windows for Full SEC Schedule originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Texas A&M football now knows when they'll be taking the field each weekend this upcoming season for their SEC slate, as well as their November non-conference FCS matchup. Advertisement ESPN, which controls television rights for SEC football, released the start times and start windows for the 2025 season on Wednesday, and Texas A&M finds itself with a plethora of afternoon and night contests on the schedule -- including a nationally televised, primetime matchup with their biggest rival. Texas A&M Aggies head coach Mike Elko Maria Lysaker-Imagn Images The Aggies had already learned earlier this offseason start times and TV networks for the first three weeks of the season, which includes a 6 PM CST kickoff at Kyle Field against in-state foe UTSA on ESPN, an 11:45 AM CST kickoff against Utah State on the SEC Network, and 6:30 PM CST kickoff in South Bend against Notre Dame on NBC. The Aggies will have their first bye week of the season following that stretch, but now know that once they're back in action on September 27 against Auburn at Kyle Field, they'll take the field for an afternoon kickoff between 2:30 PM CST and 3:30 PM CST. That will begin a three-game stretch at Kyle Field for Texas A&M -- on October 4 the Aggies will host Mississippi State in a night game set to kickoff between 5 PM CST and 7 PM CST, and October 11 Florida will visit College Station in a matchup that is a Flex slot, meaning it can be scheduled anywhere between 2:30PM CST and 7 PM CST. The exact network for these games is yet to be announced. Advertisement The Aggies then will have a three-game stretch where they'll be on the road, starting with a trip to Arkansas on October 18 that will be followed by visits to LSU on October 25 and Missouri on November 9. All three games are set for the same Flex window between 2:30 PM CST and 7 PM CST but have yet to be designated an exact network. November 15 will bring a visit from South Carolina, with this being the first SEC game for the Aggies scheduled in an early time slot, with kickoff between 11 AM CST and Noon CST. Like many of the team's games, no exact network has been pinpointed for the broadcast. Texas A&M will then host FCS opponent Samford on November 22 for their final game of the regular season at Kyle Field, set for an 11 AM CST kickoff. Finally, the Aggies will close their season with the Lone Star Showdown against archrival Texas. That game will be the sole Friday game for Texas A&M, set for November 28 -- it has been assigned a kickoff time of 6:30 PM CST and will be broadcast on ABC, giving the Aggies at least one more national, primetime game following the Week 3 showdown with Notre Dame. Former Texas A&M Aggie Running Back Deneric Prince Is Trying To Find His Home Base in the NFL and Could End Up With New England Patriots

Former Texas A&M Aggie Running Back Deneric Prince Is Trying To Find His Home Base in the NFL and Could End Up With New England Patriots originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New England Patriots are looking at a former Texas A&M running back - one who has been chipping away at getting on an active roster since starting his NFL career. Advertisement But the former Aggie was used to bouncing around before hitting the pros. Deneric Prince with the Kansas City Medley-USA TODAY Sports Deneric Prince was a 3-star commit from Manvel, Texas who originally committed to Texas A&M under then-head coach Jimbo Fisher. He received offers from Alcorn State, Southern University, Abilene Christian, North Texas, Louisville, UCLA, Pursue, SMU, Colorado State, Kansas, Arkansas, and Arizona. His single season with the Aggies ended with one game and two carries for 21 yards. Prince's final three years of NCAA football were spent at Tulsa where he played in 27 games, had 1,723 rushing yards, 314 carries, 14 rushing touchdowns, 17 catches, 162 receiving yards, and one receiving touchdown. Advertisement Starting his professional career with the Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted free agent after the 2023 NFL Draft. But after impressing the Chiefs in minicamp that year, though, he only saw the field for 15 snaps on special teams over two games. Prince is credited as a Super Bowl champion for the win over the San Francisco 49ers in Feb. 2024. Before the 2024-25 season started, he signed with the Miami Dolphins practice squad in hopes of getting called up, according to Texas A&M Aggies On SI. Unlike another former Aggie running back De'Von Achane, though, Prince had a ways to go before making the active roster. With the UFL's Memphis Showboats, he's totaled 337 rushing yards, two rushing touchdowns, 110 receiving yards, and 219 kick return yards. Now the Patriots are hinting at some interest in the running back and invited Prince to a workout. The future of his NFL career, while still uncertain, may be turning around in his favor.
