Overton, Bethell in Eng squad for India Test

Express Tribune06-06-2025

Jamie Overton was on Thursday handed a surprise recall to the England squad for the first Test against India while Jacob Bethell's return creates a top-order selection headache.
Overton has been a regular in England's white-ball set-up but won his solitary Test cap against New Zealand in 2022, taking two wickets and hitting an unexpected 97 with the bat.
It is unclear whether the all-rounder will be fully fit to take the field at Headingley on June 20, having broken a finger during the recent one-day internationals against the West Indies.
The England and Wales Cricket Board said the 31-year-old will be "assessed and reviewed daily" by its medical team.
Overton's Surrey teammate Gus Atkinson is not fit after injuring his hamstring in England's Test win against Zimbabwe last month.
England have brought back pacemen Chris Woakes and Brydon Carse, both of whom missed the early part of the season with injury problems.
Woakes could edge out Sam Cook, who retains his place in the squad after a quiet debut against Zimbabwe.
Rising star Bethell is back from Indian Premier League duty after winning the tournament with Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
The 21-year-old impressed during his debut Test series in New Zealand in November and December, scoring three half-centuries at number three, and averages 52.
Vice-captain Ollie Pope and Zak Crawley were thought to be under pressure from Bethell's reintroduction but the pair both scored hundreds against Zimbabwe.
The Test at Headingley is the first in a five-match series.
England squad:
Ben Stokes (capt), Shoaib Bashir, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Sam Cook, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Jamie Overton, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jamie Smith (wkt), Josh Tongue, Chris Woakes.

BD's key pacers to return for SL series

Bangladesh cricket team's three key fast bowlers Mustafizur Rahman, Taskin Ahmed and Shoriful Islam have recovered from injuries and are likely to return for the upcoming white-ball series against Sri Lanka. A Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) official confirmed on Saturday that the trio will undergo final fitness assessments during two intra-squad practice matches scheduled for June 23 and 25 at the Bir Shrestha Shaheed Flight Lieutenant Motiur Rahman Cricket Stadium in Chattogram. The three fast bowlers, all recovering from recent injuries, were seen bowling at full pace during the team's preparation camp. While their return to competitive cricket looks promising, BCB's medical team remains cautious. "They have bowled at full intensity, but we have to be mindful that they are returning from injuries," a BCB medical department official said. "Their match fitness will be assessed during the practice games, and only then will we make a final decision regarding their participation in the Sri Lanka tour. At this moment, they have not reported any discomfort." Mustafizur missed the T20I series against Pakistan after suffering a thumb injury during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Taskin has been sidelined due to an ankle injury, while Shoriful was ruled out of the final T20I against Pakistan following a Grade one strain of the rectus femoris muscle in his right leg, as revealed by an MRI scan. Bangladesh's white-ball probables began their training camp on Saturday in Chattogram, focusing on building momentum ahead of the Sri Lanka tour. Following the two-match Test series, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka will face off in a three-match ODI series starting next month, with the first two games scheduled to be played in Colombo and the final ODI in Pallekele. The tour will conclude with a three-match T20I series, to be played on July 10, 13 and 16 in Pallekele, Dambulla, and Colombo, respectively.

Australia drop struggling Labuschagne for first West Indies Test

SYDNEY: Australia on Friday dropped Marnus Labuschagne for the opening match of their three-Test tour of the West Indies after a poor run of form while Steve Smith is out injured. Teenager Sam Konstas and Josh Inglis come into the starting XI for the opening match in Barbados starting on Wednesday. Labuschagne opened the batting in the World Test Championship final loss to South Africa last week but managed scores of only 17 and 22 on a challenging Lord's pitch. His last hundred for Australia in Test matches was in July 2023, against England at Manchester. Since then, Labuschagne has averaged 24.7 with the bat, in 16 matches. 'Marnus at his best can be a really important member of this team,' chair of selectors George Bailey said. 'He understands his output hasn't been at the level we, or he, expects. 'We will continue working with him on the areas of his game we feel he needs to rediscover. We continue to value his skill and expect him to work through the challenge positively.' Smith injured his finger while fielding in the slips at Lord's. He left the field and did not return, watching South Africa's winning run chase from the pavilion. Australia coach McDonald backs stuttering Labuschagne 'Steve needs more time for the wound to heal so we'll give him another week's rest and assess his functionality after that,' Bailey said. The 19-year-old Konstas will earn his third cap for Australia, and his first since January. He made a blistering debut against India in December, blasting 60 from just 65 balls opening the batting and playing a number of audacious scoop shots against Jasprit Bumrah. Konstas managed only 53 runs in his next three innings, but the teenager's raw talent has selectors excited. Inglis will also make his third appearance in Test cricket, having made 102 on debut against Sri Lanka in January. Bailey said the batting order and final team would be determined closer to the first Test.

England pick Pope over Bethell at number three for first Test against India

England named their team for the first Test of the five-match series against India as they retained Ollie Pope at the expense of Jacob Bethell while Chris Woakes and Brydon Carse return to the team for the match that begins on Friday at Headingley. Bethell had impressed for England in his debut series against New Zealand when he scored three half centuries, including a knock of 96, when batting at number three. But vice-captain Pope, who played as a middle-order batter in that series, is set to be promoted to number three after his knock of 171 in the one-off Test against Zimbabwe. Bethell had missed the Test against Zimbabwe as he was playing for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Indian Premier League. Meanwhile, all-rounder Woakes returns to the team for the first time since December while Carse, who has played five Tests for England in Pakistan and New Zealand, will get the opportunity to impress on home turf for the first time. England team for first Test Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (captain), Jamie Smith (wicketkeeper), Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse, Josh Tongue, Shoaib Bashir
