Alfie Hewett fought back from heartbreak in the men's wheelchair singles final to clinch a sixth successive French Open doubles title with partner Gordon Reid. The British top seeds claimed a 6-4 1-6 10-7 victory over Japan's Tokito Oda and France's Stephane Houdet. That came after Hewett lost 6-4 7-6 (8-6) to world number one Oda in the singles showpiece."It never gets dull winning these trophies," said 27-year-old Hewett. The five-time defending champions came out of the blocks strong to take a commanding opening set. However Oda and Houdet, playing their first doubles tournament together, found three breaks to force a deciding match tie-break.There was concern as Scotland's Reid needed a three-minute medical timeout at 3-1 down in the second to address a cut on the side of his right thumb. But an inspired performance followed from the Britons, who won six points on the bounce to fight back from 4-7 down in the 10-point match tie-break.It was Hewett who completely overpowered Oda in a cross-court forehand rally to seal victory at 10-7 and protect the pair's record in Paris."Alfie did an amazing job to come back from his match earlier and produce a performance like that," Reid said."It's always a pleasure to have him on my side of the net."
Englishman Hewett had earlier lost a fourth major singles final against the talented Japanese teenager Oda. Hewett, who last won the French Open in 2021, was broken twice in the opening set to trail 4-1 but battled back to level at 4-4 before eventually succumbing to Oda.Oda also took control early in the second, breaking in the third game to lead 3-1 and he had the chance to serve-out the match at 5-4.However, Hewett - looking to add an 11th Grand Slam title to his CV after winning the Australian Open in January - refused to accept defeat and a break back led to a chaotic conclusion on Court Suzanne-Lenglen.The pair exchanged breaks to ensure a tie-break, which was subsequently won by Oda.Oda is the third player to win the men's wheelchair singles title on three or more occasions at the French Open after compatriot Shingo Kunieda (8) and Hewett (3).

Lamothe hat-trick as Bordeaux Begles reach Top 14 final
June 21 (Reuters) - Bordeaux Begles booked their place in this season's Top 14 final after a hat-trick of tries from hooker Maxime Lamothe helped seal a 39-24 win over Toulon on Saturday, setting up a showdown with champions Toulouse. The decider in Paris next Saturday is a repeat of last year's one-sided final in which Toulouse romped to a 59-3 victory. Toulouse are seeking a third successive Top 14 title, and record-extending 24th championship overall, while Bordeaux, winners of the European Champions Cup this season, are bidding for their first. After Bordeaux and Toulon traded early penalties, the former took the lead when a driving maul was brought to a halt. They worked the ball through the phases before centre Nicolas Depoortere spotted a gap in the defence and dotted down. Bordeaux extended their advantage with a second score as Lamothe burst through several tackles and powered his way over the tryline. Toulon hit back just before the break to make the halftime score 15-10 when centre Leicester Fainga'Anuku profited from a line-break by flyhalf Paolo Garbisi to run in a simple try. When Lamothe bagged his second try early in the second period, however, diving in under the posts after being fed by Yoram Moefana, the momentum swung Bordeaux's way again. Toulon's cause was not helped by a yellow card shown to lock Matthias Halagahu for a delivered knock-down, and when winger Damian Penaud and Lamothe added two more scores in quick succession the game was over as a contest. Winger Setariki Tuicuvu and prop Beka Gigashvili managed a consolation tries for Toulon, but it was too little too late for the four-times champions.

Injured Ruud pulls out of Wimbledon
June 21 (Reuters) - Norway's Casper Ruud has pulled out of Wimbledon as he is still struggling to recover from a knee injury, his management told local media on Saturday. The world No. 16 and two-time French Open finalist suffered a shock second-round exit at the claycourt major last month, losing to unseeded Nuno Borges of Portugal. Afterwards he said he had been struggling with a knee injury for some time and he has not been in action on the men's tour since, withdrawing from the grasscourt event in Mallorca. "He's back on the court, and things are going well, but it looks like playing best-of-five sets is unfortunately a bit too soon. Gstaad will be next for Casper now," manager Tina Falster told NTB. Ruud's best showing at Wimbledon is three second-round appearances. Wimbledon starts on June 30, while the Swiss Open in Gstaad begins on July 14.
