Online fraud in Melaka costs victims RM30.85m in five months
MELAKA: A total of 934 online scam cases with losses amounting to RM30.85 million were recorded in Melaka from January 1 to June 2 this year.
State Science, Technology, Innovation and Digital Communications Committee deputy chairman Datuk Mohd Noor Helmy Abdul Halem said all the cases were reported through the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) and the police.
During the same period, authorities arrested 531 individuals linked to online scam syndicates, with 312 of them charged in court.
'This year's largest individual loss involved a victim who lost RM2.9 million. Alarmingly, more professionals—including doctors, bank officers and corporate managers—are falling victim to these scams, not just ordinary citizens or civil servants,' he told reporters here today.
He noted that while total losses were slightly lower than the same period last year, online scams remain a serious concern and ongoing awareness efforts are crucial.
The most common scams reported involved fake investments on Telegram and Facebook, bogus job offers, and non-existent house-cleaning services.
'Despite being aware of the risks, many victims were lured in due to greed and impulsive decisions,' he added.
Mohd Noor Helmy was speaking after launching the Content Creator Enhancement Workshop under the Anti-Scam Awareness Campaign, which saw the participation of around 50 individuals, including MADANI community leaders.
The programme, held in collaboration with the Melaka Information Department, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), and the police, also trained participants to create digital content and serve as information agents to raise public awareness of online scams.

Nurul Izzah calls for clampdown on 'national disgrace' - online child sexual exploitation
KUALA LUMPUR: PKR deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar has called for an urgent, coordinated action to tackle the growing threat of online child sexual exploitation. Describing it as a "national disgrace", she said the issue demanded more than just reactive measures. "The Communications Ministry and MCMC must outline how they monitor digital platforms for such abuses and prove that their detection systems are effective. "The ministry and police can also release public updates on the investigation into the Facebook group and similar past cases that have remained out of public view." Citing her own experience with online sexual threats, Nurul Izzah revealed that she had been targeted with gang rape threats in January. "A police report was lodged and alhamdulillah action was taken — on June 18, the individual responsible was formally charged with publishing 11 obscene and offensive criminal threats against me. "This incident serves as a stark reminder that action must be taken whenever such threats arise, without exception and without delay," she said. Nurul Izzah said the government must provide Parliament with a detailed update on the implementation of the Online Safety Act and offer a comprehensive briefing on the effectiveness of the D11 special police unit, which was established to handle sexual crimes. She called for special allocations to strengthen this unit and said Malaysia should consider adopting an international model similar to ELIPSIA, an initiative involving police forces in Latin America and Europe, to jointly combat online child sexual exploitation. She also advocated for greater public access to the Child Sexual Offender Registry, which was launched in 2019, emphasising that the goal is not to shame, but to protect vulnerable communities. Additionally, she proposed that the Education Ministry improve the health education syllabus in schools by incorporating online safety awareness, enabling students to identify grooming behaviour and inappropriate content more effectively. "Offenders are using increasingly sophisticated technologies and the dark web to conceal their actions. "We are always acting too late. The system must evolve to meet the scale of the threat." Nurul Izzah said PKR would be launching a nationwide campaign focused on raising public awareness, offering community-led counselling and support, collaborating with NGOs and schools, setting up awareness counters in public spaces and involving local leaders and district offices in advocacy and monitoring efforts.

Two Men In Penang Lose RM2.35 Mln In Investment Scams
GEORGE TOWN, June 22 (Bernama) -- Two men, including a senior citizen, suffered a loss of RM2.35 million after each fell victim to online investment fraud syndicates, in separate incidents in Penang recently. Penang police chief Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said in the first case, the Commercial Crime Investigation Division (BSJK) of Seberang Perai Tengah district police headquarters received a complaint from a 57-year-old local man who is an insurance agent in Perai, yesterday after suffering a loss of almost RM1.5 million. "According to the man, he had seen a stock investment advertisement promising high returns on Facebook in December and the victim then contacted the female suspect via the WhatsApp application. "The investment offered various packages with promises of lucrative returns and the victim was interested in participating, before downloading the stock investment application and on Dec 30 made the first transfer of RM9,999 and earning a profit of RM18,400," he said in a statement today. He said that following that his confidence grew in the investment, the victim then made 35 money transfers between Feb 17 and April 24 into seven bank accounts belonging to different companies involving a total of RM1,495,176. Hamzah said the man only realised he had been a victim of fraud after failing to withdraw profits on the investment application and was even asked to make an additional payment. For the second case, he said a 73-year-old elderly man who is a retired accountant at a factory had filed a police report at north-east police headquarters yesterday after also falling victim to an online investment scam involving a loss of RM855,001. "According to the victim, he saw an investment advertisement for cryptocurrency investments that offered high profits in a short period of time on Facebook in March and the elderly person clicked on the advertisement link before contacting the female suspect via the WhatsApp application," he said. Hamzah said the victim joined and downloaded the investment application before making 14 transactions to five bank accounts belonging to different companies from April 15 to June 11, but did not receive any profits.
