Chinese AI rival spending 2% of ChatGPT's budget
An artificial intelligence pioneer has questioned the sustainability of ChatGPT creator OpenAI, noting that Chinese rival DeepSeek has been trained at a fraction of the cost.
DeepSeek heated up an AI race between China and the US in January after launching an open-source version of its reasoning AI model, R1. Unlike its American rival ChatGPT, the Chinese bot is freely available without a subscription, which has helped it rapidly become the most downloaded app on Apple's and Google's stores.
'If you think about OpenAI's $7 billion of operating costs in 2024, DeepSeek is probably operating with 2% of the operating expense,'
Kai-Fu Lee, a writer, venture capitalist, and technology executive who has over 30 years' experience in AI, said on Thursday in an interview with Bloomberg.
Lee is the founder of Sinovation Ventures, a venture capital firm focused on supporting Chinese startups in AI and technology, as well as establishing an AI institute which focuses on integrating new technology into traditional industries and developing AI-driven startups. He previously served as founding director of Microsoft Research Asia before working at Google and Apple.

'making a massive loss.'
He compared this to DeepSeek, which is offered to developers for free or at a fraction of the cost.
'So with that kind of formidable competitor, I think Sam Altman is probably not sleeping well,'
he said, referring to the OpenAI CEO.
The venture investor and founder of 01.AI projected that only three AI models – DeepSeek, Alibaba Group Holding, and ByteDance – would survive China's domestic shakeup triggered by the onset of DeepSeek. Lee added that xAI, OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic could lead the sector in the US.
He emphasized that pioneer models such as ChatGPT have been commoditized, making the business model of the US developer vulnerable to cheaper economics presented by open-source AI such as DeepSeek.

OpenAI signs $200 million Pentagon deal
OpenAI, the developer of the ChatGPT language model, has received a $200 million contract from the US Department of Defense, the Pentagon announced Monday. The company says it is part of a drive to 'defend democracy' against rising Chinese competition. The contract tasks OpenAI with developing 'prototype frontier AI capabilities to address critical national security challenges in both warfighting and enterprise domains,' according to the announcement. The work is expected to be performed in the National Capital Region, which includes Washington DC, and is scheduled for completion by July 2026. Though this marks OpenAI's first publicly disclosed agreement with the DoD, the company has previously been involved in national security initiatives. In December, OpenAI partnered with military contractor Anduril Industries to develop artificial intelligence systems for counter-drone operations. At the time, Anduril said the collaboration aimed at applying AI to 'rapidly synthesize time-sensitive data, reduce the burden on human operators, and improve situational awareness.' In January, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman joined other Silicon Valley executives and President Donald Trump in announcing Project Stargate, a $500 billion investment in US computing infrastructure intended to support future AI development. That same month, OpenAI introduced a version of ChatGPT tailored specifically for the US government. The company said the software would run on specialized hardware, such as Microsoft Azure's cloud services, allowing government agencies to 'manage their own security, privacy, and compliance requirements.' In late January, Western tech developers and investors were rocked by the introduction of Chinese AI startup DeepSeek, which claimed its product was superior to ChatGPT in key operational cost metrics. The next month, Altman said at a gathering in Washington that OpenAI was committed to helping the US government safeguard 'America's lead in AI' for the sake of protecting 'democratic values.' In April, trade publications reported that OpenAI was developing a new social media platform similar to Elon Musk's X. Musk, once a close Trump ally, has been working to integrate his own AI assistant, Grok, into X. The billionaire co-founded OpenAI but parted ways with the company in 2018. Musk and Altman are now reportedly engaged in a 'bitter rivalry.'

Russian MP lays out terms for YouTube's return
YouTube can only resume full operations in Russia if it fulfills a series of legal and technical conditions, State Duma member Anton Nemkin has told RIA Novosti. Although not officially blocked, YouTube has been largely inaccessible in Russia since last year, when its loading speed began slow dramatically. Authorities blamed a lack of server maintenance following Google's exit from the country in 2022. Later, officials partially confirmed the slowdown was also linked to YouTube's failure to comply with Russian law. Nemkin said on Friday that YouTube needed to deal with abandoned equipment, settle outstanding fines, and establish a legal entity in Russia before the platform's functionality in the country can be fully restored. The MP also called on YouTube to restore access to blocked Russian accounts. The platform has removed some media outlets, including RT and Sputnik, and has repeatedly taken down channels run by Russian bloggers, journalists, and artists. Moscow says the removals target content that reflects views diverging from those prevalent in the West. 'Without these steps, it's impossible to speak of any 'easing' – this is not about politics, but legal compliance,' Nemkin said. In March, it was reported that Russian-registered Google LLC owed national broadcasters $1.16 quintillion in fines for failing to restore their YouTube channels. In January, RBK said the international Google corporation owed more than $22 undecillion. The Kremlin described the figures as symbolic, intended to pressure the company into complying with Russian law. Nemkin said dialogue with global platforms such as YouTube could only happen on Russia's terms. 'This is not about bans for the sake of bans, but about equal rights,' he said, adding that companies must comply with local laws, pay taxes, and store user data in Russia. The lawmaker called for an end to the era of unchecked power for major IT companies. If foreign platforms are restored, 'there is no going back to the old dependence.' 'We've learned a harsh but valuable lesson: we cannot build our digital future on platforms that can flip the switch at any moment,' he said, adding that YouTube should no longer serve as the foundation of Russia's internet landscape. Nemkin pointed out that Russia is now developing its own infrastructure – search engines, cloud storage, video hosting, and ad systems – in support of its 'digital sovereignty.'

AI CEO issues stark warning
Artificial intelligence could eliminate half of all entry-level white-collar jobs within the next five years, the CEO of American AI research company Anthropic, Dario Amodei has warned. In a statement to Axios published on Wednesday, Amodei, who co-founded Anthropic and is a former OpenAI executive, said he hopes to jolt the US government and fellow developers into preparing for the consequences of rapid automation. AI could spike unemployment in the US to 10-20% in the next one to five years, he warned. AI development companies are already working on systems that could soon replace workers in technology, finance, law, consulting and other white-collar professions, particularly entry-level positions, Amodei claimed. The public and politicians are still 'unaware' that a major shift is about to happen and insisted that companies and officials needed to stop 'sugar-coating' what lies ahead, particularly for younger workers. Earlier this month, a report by the Linux Foundation, commissioned by Meta, found that open source AI is already transforming the economy by boosting efficiency, innovation, cost savings, and revenue gains. However, Amodei has expressed concern that people could continue to stay ignorant of the threat of being replaced by AI, especially if the US government chooses to stay silent on the issue out of fear of spooking workers or falling behind China. Soon, 'almost overnight,' business leaders will see savings in replacing humans with AI and implement a change 'en masse.' They will stop opening new jobs or backfilling existing ones, and replace human workers with automated alternatives, Amodei claimed. He has proposed several mitigation strategies, including a special index to track AI's impact across occupations, and briefings for lawmakers to raise awareness. He also suggested a 'token tax' — a system where a percentage of AI-generated revenue would be redistributed by the government. Amodei's warning comes as a number of major companies have recently started laying off a considerable amount of workers, which some believe is being done in anticipation of major shifts due to AI. Earlier this month, Microsoft fired some 6,000 workers, mostly engineers, despite reporting strong sales and profits. Walmart has cut 1,500 corporate jobs to 'simplify operations' while Crowdstrike - a Texas based cybersecurity company - has slashed 500 positions citing 'a market and technology inflection point, with AI reshaping every industry.'
