In Istanbul, top Arab League diplomats discuss Iran-Israel war
ISTANBUL: Arab League foreign ministers gathered in Istanbul late Friday to discuss the escalating war between Iran and Israel, Turkish state news agency Anadolu said, quoting diplomatic sources.
The ministers were in Turkey's largest city on the eve of weekend gathering of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), which was also slated to discuss the air war launched a week ago.
Israel began its assault in the early hours of June 13, saying Iran was on the verge of developing nuclear weapons, triggering an immediate immediate retaliation from Tehran in the worst-ever confrontation between the two arch-rivals.
Some 40 top diplomats are slated to join the weekend gathering of the OIC which will also have a session dedicated to discussing the Iran-Israel crisis, the Turkish foreign ministry said.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who met with his counterparts from Britain, France and Germany in Geneva on Friday, will also attend and address the diplomats, the ministry said.
Earlier on Friday, Araghchi said Tehran was ready to 'consider diplomacy' again only if Israel's 'aggression is stopped'.
The Arab League ministers were expected to release a statement following their meeting, Anadolu said.

"At this meeting, at the suggestion of Iran, the issue of the Zionist regime's attack on our country will be specifically addressed," said Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, according to the news agency. KUALA LUMPUR, June 21 – Malaysia has temporarily shut its embassy in Iran and ordered the immediate return of all diplomatic staff following escalating tensions in the Middle East, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said today. New Straits Times quoted him saying the decision was made in response to a wave of Israeli airstrikes on Iran, with Malaysia joining several other countries that have already withdrawn their diplomatic missions from the country. 'I have instructed all embassy personnel, including the ambassador, to leave. All Malaysians have been asked to exit Iran,' he said. He added that some have declined to leave, including three students in Qom and one in Isfahan, who are based far from Tehran. Last week, Putrajaya said all Malaysians currently in Iran have been strongly urged to leave the country immediately amid the heightened security situation following Israel's aggression against Iran. The Foreign Ministry said the situation in Iran remains highly volatile and may take a turn for the worse without warning. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil previously said that the government would evacuate all Malaysians from Iran yesterday. Yesterday, the Ministry of Higher Education said it will continue to monitor Malaysian students currently in Iran after identifying seven there, although the exact number remains uncertain as some are there under self-sponsorship.

Do not take Israel-Iran conflict lightly, says Defence Minister
KOTA TINGGI: The escalating conflict between Israel and Iran should not be taken lightly as it could lead to a world war if not resolved properly, says Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin. The Defence Minister stated that although Malaysia is not involved in the conflict, the government will continue to monitor the situation. 'Conflicts like this, if not resolved properly, could lead to a world war. 'When this happens, people all over the world are affected as oil prices will spike and supplies will be cut off. Malaysia, as a trading nation, will also be affected,' he told reporters after attending a community ginger harvesting programme at Kampung Gembut, Sedili on Saturday (June 21). Mohamed Khaled added that flights are not allowed to enter or leave Iran at the moment, so Malaysians in the country will be brought out by land to Turkmenistan. 'They will then be flown back to Malaysia via commercial flights,' he said, noting that only a small number of citizens are involved and the repatriation efforts are being carried out by the Foreign Ministry. On Thursday (June 19), government spokesman Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said Malaysian students, tourists, and embassy personnel will be assisted to leave Iran by Friday (June 20).
