
FASTag Annual Pass explained: Cost, benefits, and how to get it
India's FASTag, toll collection system, is all set for a major upgrade. Starting August 15, 2025, the Indian government will roll out a new FASTag Annual Pass for private vehicles.

The new initiative was announced by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. And the main aim of this pass is to make highway travel more affordable, simple and faster for millions of travellers who use highways across the nation.
Understanding the new pass system
The new pass system will allow owners of private cars, jeeps, and vans to pay a one-time fee of INR 3,000 for an annual pass. With this, travellers can take 200 trips across any national highway toll plazas across India.
Whichever comes first will be considered. Once you hit the approved number, your regular FASTag charges will resume.

Advantages
There are several advantages of the annual pass but one of the biggest benefits is that it is cost effective. Understand this with this example: If you are a regular traveller, who pays ₹340 for monthly toll pass that too for just one toll plaza. In 12 months, you'll end up paying ₹4,080 but if you are opting for a yearly pass, you'll just pay ₹3,000 which covers travel across the entire national highway network. So you are surely saving big!
No need for monthly top-ups
The new system also removes the need for monthly top-ups or buying separate passes for different plazas.
Everything is prepaid and managed through your existing FASTag. It will be updated and monitored using the Rajmarg Yatra app or official NHAI portals.

The annual pass system will be functional from Independence Day 2025 (15th August). From this day, users can buy and activate the pass online without any paperwork.

Varanasi gears up for CZC meeting, final touches underway
1 2 Varanasi: With the Central Zonal Council (CZC) meeting scheduled for June 25, preparations have intensified in Varanasi. Beautification works are nearing completion, particularly along routes that will witness VIP movements beginning Monday evening. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, and the CMs of Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttarakhand are expected to attend the meeting. According to officials, this will be the first time a non-state capital city is hosting a zonal council meeting, mrking a significant moment for Varanasi following its successful hosting of G20 events in 2023. Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Divisional Commissioner S. Rajalingam and Commissioner of Police Mohit Agrawal confirmed that all logistical and security arrangements are in the final stages. The visiting CMs— Pushkar Singh Dhami (Uttarakhand), Mohan Yadav (Madhya Pradesh), and Vishnu Deo Sai (Chhattisgarh) — will arrive in the city on Monday. That evening, they will offer prayers at the Kaal Bhairav and Kashi Vishwanath temples before proceeding to the meeting venue at Hotel Taj in Nadesar on Tuesday morning. To ensure smooth movement and aesthetic appeal, authorities are focusing on key areas including the stretch from Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport to Hotel Taj and the roads leading to both temples. Thematic display boards are being installed along the Varuna bridge, while road dividers are being freshly painted. Work on enhancing street lighting and greenery is also nearing completion, with multiple agencies working in coordination. On the security front, Commissioner Agrawal said a multi-layered deployment plan has been finalised. Security personnel will be stationed at the venue and across the VIP routes. Measures include rooftop surveillance, deployment of officers in plain clothes, drone monitoring, and route diversions. Traffic diversions will remain in effect from Monday evening until the dignitaries' departure on Tuesday. CM Yogi during his visit to the venue on June 16, had reviewed the arrangements and instructed officials to ensure the timely completion of all pending work. With issues from multiple departments expected to be discussed, senior officials from Union ministries and departments of the four participating states have already started arriving in the city.

Shifting of high tension towers delay Vijayawada West bypass road works
Vijayawada: The full-fledged completion of the Vijayawada West bypass road is likely to be pushed to the end of the year or early next year. The shifting of the High Tension (HT) line towers spanning approximately 520 metre on the package-III stretch from Gannavaram to Gollapudi is expected to take another three months. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The 47.8 km Vijayawada Western Bypass, being constructed under Bharat Mala Pariyojana, starts from Chinna Avutapalli in Gannavaram and culminates at Chinna Kakani on the outskirts of Mangalagiri. It will bypass the vehicular traffic going towards Chennai and Hyderabad from Visakhapatnam and vice versa, as vehicles could bypass without entering Vijayawada city, significantly reducing the traffic burden on the city. While the Bharat Mala Pariyojana road infrastructure project was divided into four packages, the works on the first two packages—package-I from Gundugolanu to Kalaparru and package-II from Kalaparru to Chinna Avutapalli, which includes the six-laning of the highway road—were completed. The completion of package-III and package-IV from Chinna Avutapalli to Gollapudi and Gollapudi to Chinna Kakani has hit multiple roadblocks, resulting in the delay of the inauguration of the Vijayawada Western Bypass. "Originally, the bypass road was to be completed by March 2025. However, govt objected to the bypass not having road cuttings to the roads within the Amaravati capital, which led to its delay for some time. Following this, the bypass road project hit the HT lines roadblock, wherein HT line towers near Nunna stretching nearly 1.2 km had to be shifted due to their positioning right within the project alignment," an NHAI official said. "We missed the June deadline given by the chief minister as the problem to shift HT line towers in around a 520-metre stretch is still pending resolution. We are awaiting the shifting of the HT line towers, which is expected to take another three months, thus to fast-track the remaining works, which would be completed in a short span," the NHAI official said.

Homeward bound: City prof starts 1.5k km journey to Mashhad to escape from Iran
Kolkata: It is a race against time for geography professor Falguni Dey to travel from Astara to Mashhad, through the war-ravaged Iran, where India has already started an evacuation operation. Hopeful of getting entry through the Nurduz-Agarak border to Armenia, which has allowed hundreds of Indians to cross the border and head back home, Dey had applied for an e-visa with the country. On Friday late evening, Armenia declined his visa application, leaving Dey hapless and desperate. Azerbaijan, which has also been allowing foreign nationals, kept silent on his application as well. Desperate to escape Iran, Dey called up an official at the Indian embassy in Tehran on Friday night. "He suggested I reach Mashhad somehow as the Indian authorities have already started evacuating from there. There is no other way out for me. It is going to be nearly a 1,500 km journey from the northwest of Iran to the west of the country," Dey told TOI over phone. India launched Operation Sindhu earlier this week to evacuate Indians stranded in Iran after Tehran agreed to lift airspace restrictions as a "special gesture". During the evacuation operation, India evacuated 517 nationals from Iran by Saturday morning. Mashhad is close to Iran's border with Turkmenistan, and India started evacuating through a safe air corridor. Virtually penniless, Dey, on Friday night, approached a car driver who agreed to take him on the arduous and dangerous route to Mashhad. Vibrant and noisy Tehran and the adjoining areas have transformed into abandoned streets amid an eerie silence. "We will try to bypass Tehran. We are not sure if there will be a fresh phase of attack," said Dey. While the internet is cut off in large parts of Iran, Mashhad still has connectivity. "I will be able to receive and send documents only when I am in Mashhad. I hope it will be a little better among many other Indians."
