Pitch report: How Bengaluru's netas padded up for big fight
For once, politicians felt the pulse of the people and set up huge screens in open grounds to beam live the gladiatorial IPL title clash in Bengaluru and also neighbouring Hoskote Tuesday night.
At BGS Ground in MC Layout, Vijayanagar, thousands of RCB fans got together to watch the match. The event was organised by Vijayanagar MLA M Krishnappa and his son Govindarajanagar MLA Priya Krishna. The stadium had huge LED lights, food stalls and music to entertain the crowd.
Priya Krishna told TOI: "It is only sports that can bring people from all walks of life together. We should have more such public gatherings to unite people."
Organisers had made seating arrangements for an audience of 10,000 at the ground, whose capacity was 30,000. Police said the ground was overrun by supporters. To serve the basic needs of fans, 20 e-toilets — 10 each for men and women — had been set up.
A similar screening was organised at Chandini Chowk Circle in Bengaluru Shivajinagar, courtesy MLA Rizwan Arshad. A massive crowd was seen enjoying the match standing at the junction. MLA Sharath Bachegowda hosted a similar event for his constituents at Hoskote, near Bengaluru.

Karnataka moots 7-yr jail for fake news, 2-5 yrs for misinformation
AI image BENGALURU: Karnataka's govt has resolved to crackdown on fake news and misinformation by constituting a six-member social-media regulatory authority to ban promotion and spread of fake news on social media, prohibit posting of content insulting to women, ban publication of content that disrespects Sanatana Dharma, its symbols, beliefs, and content that promotes superstition. Under the Karnataka Misinformation and Fake News (Prohibition) Bill, 2025, accessed by TOI, govt has proposed up to seven years in prison or Rs 10 lakh fine, or both, if social-media users are found guilty of sharing fake news. It has also suggested a two- to five-year jail term and fine for misinformation on social media or in publications. These offences will be considered cognisable but non-bailable. The social-media regulatory authority will ensure content posted on social media should be based on authentic research on subjects related to science, history, religion, philosophy and literature. To fasten accountability, the bill states special courts will be set up with Karnataka HC's concurrence, with a sessions judge presiding over one or more districts. The special courts will issue directions to intermediaries, publishers, broadcasters, or any other persons exercising control over communication medium disseminating misinformation to persons in Karnataka. The proposal gives aggrieved parties 30 days to respond to notices. If directions are ignored, then the court can issue punishment of simple imprisonment of up to 2 years and a fine of Rs 25,000 a day, subject to a maximum of Rs 25 lakh. The bill suggests action against directors of companies and employees who were present during the violation of the laws if their company is found guilty.

Zeeshan eyeing another dominant season
Lucknow: After the mini-auction, players are gearing up for the third edition of the UPT20 League 2025, which is likely to begin in August. Zeeshan Ansari , the highest wicket-taker of the previous edition — a performance that opened doors to the Indian Premier League for him — is all set to shine once again. Zeeshan, who was picked by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for Rs 40 lakh, took 6 wickets in 10 matches in this year's IPL season. Responding to a question about whether he feels any pressure to perform in this season of the UPT20 League, Zeeshan said, "I don't play under pressure or for records. If I keep doing what I've been doing, I believe things will turn out well. My approach is going to be the same, whether it's the IPL or the UPT20 League." Speaking about the UPT20 League, the Lucknow-based leg-spinner said, "In my opinion, it's a huge platform for every player. If you perform well, you will be noticed. Around 10–12 players from Uttar Pradesh have managed to make it to the IPL." Zeeshan further emphasised the importance of fitness in today's competitive cricket. "The main thing is to stay fit throughout the year. I've worked with IPL trainers and have now hired a personal trainer for myself." When asked to compare the IPL with the UPT20 League, Ansari said, "The difference is mainly about pressure. In the UP T20 League, there's less pressure and a smaller audience. But in the IPL, there's a huge crowd, and people expect you to perform. It's all about how well you handle the pressure." "To be honest, I couldn't play to my full potential because it was my debut season. Initially, I wasn't sure if I'd even make it to the playing XI," he added. On playing domestic cricket, Zeeshan said, "Domestic cricket is crucial. Performing in domestic cricket isn't easy. Even if you do well in the IPL and get noticed, taking wickets in the Ranji Trophy shows your true calibre." When asked about his preparations for this season after being the highest wicket-taker in last year's UPT20 League, he said, "My goal is to bowl well and be at the top again," he signed off.
