Canada to sign defence procurement pact with EU: officials
European Union officials say Canada is likely to sign a defence procurement agreement with the continent when Prime Minister Mark Carney goes to Brussels later this month.
Carney is set to visit Brussels on June 23 for the Canada-EU summit, where he will meet with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa.
Attending the G7 summit in Alberta today, both EU leaders say Canada's involvement in what they call Europe's 'rapidly evolving defence architecture' is set to deepen.

Von der Leyen says Canada will sign a security and defence partnership with the EU which will allow it to join a European loan program for joint defence projects.

The 150-billion euro program is called Security Action for Europe, or SAFE, and is part of the ReArm Europe initiative that Carney says he wants Canada to join.
Von der Leyen says the SAFE program can be joined by Europe's 'very close allies, friends and partners' and the deal this month will allow for negotiations on bringing Canada into the program.

Speaking at an event in Bhubaneswar on Friday, PM Modi said that he had politely declined an invitation from US President Donald Trump to visit the United States on his way back from Canada after the G7 Summit, choosing instead to travel to Odisha -- the 'land of Lord Jagannath,' which he called more important. 'At a time when Odisha's BJP government is completing one year, the people of Odisha are preparing for the Lord Jagannath Rath Yatra. He is our 'prerna' inspiration and 'aaradhya' worship,' PM Modi said. 'Just two days ago, I was in Canada for the G7 summit. During that time, US President Donald Trump called me and invited me with great insistence. I told the President of America, Thank you for the invitation, but I need to go to the land of the Lord. So I politely declined his invitation. Your love has drawn me to the land of the Lord,' he said. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has said that his government aims to make the State a USD 500 billion economy by 2036, adding that the government would cooperate with the Centre to achieve the goal of Viksit Bharat. 'We will cooperate with the centre to achieve the goal of Viksit Bharat... Our GDP is more than the national average... We have prepared a vision document for 2036... We aim to make Odisha a USD 500 billion economy by 2036. A double-digit growth rate is required for this,' Majhi told ANI. Majhi commended Prime Minister Modi's leadership and highlighted contributions to the state's development. 'In January, PM Modi urged the investors to participate in the Utkarsh Odisha 2025 conclave. We received proposals worth Rs 17 lakh crores in just two days, which is a record. This happened because the investors trusted you. We are working to make Odisha the industrial hub of eastern India...,' he said. On Operation Sindoor, Majhi lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, stating, 'Under your leadership, the terrorist has been eliminated. Saskatchewan exempts Canada Disability Benefit from income assistance programs

(Pexels) The Government of Saskatchewan has announced that the Canada Disability Benefit will be exempt from its core income assistance programs. This means that people with disabilities can receive up to $200 per month in additional federal income without affecting their provincial income assistance benefits. Social Services Minister Terry Jenson says this will put more money in the pockets of Saskatchewan income assistance clients. 'Our government is committed to supporting people with disabilities, and we brought our Saskatchewan perspective to collaborations with the Government of Canada on this new program,' Jenson said in a news release. The province says as part of the 2025-26 budget, Saskatchewan Income Support (SIS) and Saskatchewan Assured Income for Disability (SAID) benefits have increased by two per cent. The SAID program provides long-term income support and services to those with disabilities. SAID benefits include a living income benefit, disability income benefit, and exceptional need income benefit, varying depending on individual needs. As of April 1, 2025, annual earned income exemptions have been updated to $7,500 for singles, $8,700 for couples, and $9,500 for families

Province pledges $2.2M to rebuild Legion branch, restore monument
Northern Ontario Watch The provincial government announced Friday it's investing more than $2.2 million to help rebuild Branch 25 of the Royal Canadian Legion. The funding will support reconstruction on the ground floor of a new multi-level residential complex in Sault Ste. Marie. A portion will also go toward restoring the Wawanosh Monument, which commemorates the former Wawanosh Residential School where the Legion now stands.
