Poem on ecology and friendship wins Caterpillar Poetry Prize 2025

'What a joy this was,' Kate Wakeling said of judging the Caterpillar Poetry Prize 2025. The annual prize, run by The Moth, which celebrates its 15th birthday this month, has been judged in the past by Michael Morpurgo and Roger McGough, and shines a much-needed light on poetry written by adults for children.
The winner this year is Laura Theis, with her poem, I complain to my friend who has been turned into a tree. 'There is depth and complexity here – about ecology, about friendship – but this is all worn lightly, and the tone is sustained with great skill and beauty from start to finish," Wakeling said. 'Picking a favourite line is almost impossible but if I had to choose one, I'd plump for 'She greens at me, wistfully', which is such a gorgeous image, expressed with such economy, music and charm. I don't
exactly
know what it means – except I also do. For me, this is the sort of magic that only a poem can accomplish."
Theis grew up in a German town where each street was named after a different fairy tale, and she now lives in Oxford. She writes in English as her second language, for readers of all ages. She has a distinction in creative writing from Oxford University, and her work has been widely anthologised and appears in
Poetry, Oxford Poetry, Rattle, Crannóg, Tyger Tyger, Berlin Lit
and many others. She has been awarded the Alpine Fellowship, the Mogford Prize, the AM Heath Prize, the Live Canon Collection Prize and the Arthur Welton Award from the Society of Authors. She was nominated for the Forward Prize and the SFPA Elgin Award and was a finalist for the Bridport Prize, The National Poetry Competition and the BBC Short Story Prize.

I complain to my friend
who has been turned into a tree.
You have it so easy.
She greens at me, wistfully.
Do I?
She shakes her branches,
sways towards me.
What makes you think so?
I just envy you, I say.
You're going to live
for hundreds of years now,
with no stress and nothing to worry about.
She drops a leaf on me as if
I'm being stupid.
Not in this city I won't, not in this day and age.
I might even die before you. And as for stress,
how about worrying about winter, and water
too much of it, or too little, and what about soil compaction,
pollution, bug infestations, lice, exposure to road salt,
the construction site right by my roots? What about fires and lightning?
Sometimes the dust on my leaves gets so thick
I can no longer breathe. You know those nightmares
where you are rooted to one spot and can't get away?
Yeah, that's what I thought. I do not sleep now, not ever.
I fling my arms around her, feeling contrite.
Forgive me, I had no idea, I whisper into her bark.
You never asked.
Theis will receive €1,000 and spend a week at Circle of Misse in France, a retreat where creativity takes centre stage – set on the banks of the Thouet River, a tributary of the Loire.
Nicky Hetherington
Second prize is awarded to Nicky Hetherington's poem Dyslexia. Hetherington lives in rural mid-Wales. Her work has been published widely and includes her children's book,
Jack and the Dog Boy
and a poetry pamphlet
Cultivating Caterpillars
. She also produced and edited a small anthology of poetry,
A Spot of Poetry for Kids
, raising money for Children in Need. She has been placed in several competitions, including the Oriel Davies Competition, and this year she was selected to participate in Literature Wales's Speak Back project, developing poetry for performance, from which a video anthology will be produced.
Hetherington often finds inspiration in nature and the countryside and issues of social justice, especially of the marginalised or invisible. Or sometimes just plain nonsense, because, when the world doesn't always make sense, sometimes nonsense is the only sensible response.
'I had been keeping my eyes open for a really funny and surprising poem,' Wakeling said, 'and was so glad to come across this delight. Of course, this poem is also grounded in something thoughtful and perceptive. Through the joyfully absurd imagery at its close, it expresses something very particular and poignant about the challenges of living with dyslexia.
'I especially loved the framing device of the 'dry stone wall'; this slow intricate craft is an excellent metaphor for writing as a whole, while the particular weight and labour of the process also conveys something powerful about dyslexia. And then

, out of nowhere land the squirrels and saucepans. I did a proper lol."
Dyslexia
It's like building a dry stone wall.
Every stone is a different shape and size
so it's really tricky …
to see which ones …
will fit … the gaps.
You try your best,
sorting through your pile of stones
to find the right one ...
for each spot.
Then, when you've finished, someone says,
'That's not a stone,
that's a squirrel,
and that one's a saucepan!

Lorraine Mariner
Third prize goes to Lorraine Mariner, a librarian at the National Poetry Library in London, for her poem Food Bank. Mariner has published two collections of poetry for adults with Picador,
Furniture
and
There Will Be No More Nonsense
, and has twice been shortlisted in the Forward Prizes and also for the Seamus Heaney Centre Poetry Prize.
Working with the children's books and on school visits and early years Rug Rhymes at the Poetry Library inspired her to start writing poems and picture books for children. She's published her poems for children and young people in
The Dirigible Balloon

Paper Lanterns
,
The Toy
and
Tyger Tyger
. She is currently completing her third collection for adults which features poems about her Greek and Irish family history.
'This accomplished sonnet packs a punch through such simple and direct language,' Wakeling said. 'It is powerful and moving in its dignity and precision. The use of a child's voice, so matter of fact, is skilfully handled and I thought the use of form here was especially effective: the poem feels taut and controlled, which reflects its subject very sharply. This was a poem I found myself hankering to return to, and each time I read it again I found another glinting detail of the poet's craft and care, which in turn led me deeper into the poem's meaning and purpose.'
Food Bank
Josie saw me coming out the Food Bank.
I was helping my mum to carry the bags.
On the bus to our flat I couldn't speak
and the silence made Mum sad.
Josie's the coolest kid in class 6B.
She has great hair, I'm jealous of her clothes.
Will she tell the other kids she saw me?
Her mum's a lawyer, they have a pool at home.
Today I told my mum I was poorly
but her thermometer said I was fine for school.
Josie's chatting with her friends like normal,
won't look at me as the class walks to our room.
But on my chair there's a bag of cakes and a note,
'I baked too many, these are for you.'
Wakeling also commended poems by Carole Bromley, Helen Dineen, Victoria Gatehouse, Jemima Laing, Kate O'Brien, Rachel Piercey and Melinda Szymanik.
Alongside The Caterpillar Poetry Prize, The Moth runs three annual literary prizes. The Moth Short Story Prize, judged by Evie Wyld, closes on June 30th; The Moth Nature Writing Prize, judged by Mark Cocker, closes on September 30th, and The Moth Poetry Prize opens again in August.

Why there is more to soccer jerseys today than mere colours, fabrics and tribalism

Joey D'Urso is showing me football jerseys, lifting them up to the screen from his sunny London apartment. Among them are Venezia, Aston Villa and Schalke. To the uninitiated, his haul might seem excessive. Yet, these shirts have been but a fraction of those D'Urso has collated over the past five years. D'Urso is senior data journalist at The Times of London, but he previously worked as a political correspondent for the BBC and an investigations writer for The Athletic. He regularly worked on stories about how Asian gambling companies came to dominate the Premier League , Saudi Arabia's growing influence on sport in general, and the nature of how jersey sponsors are chosen to represent more than modified trims, polyester collars and the colours that will go on to trace a young person's life. That led to him writing More than a Shirt: How Football Shirts Explain Global Politics, Money and Power, a new investigative book set on tracing the lines between the seemingly innocuous colour combinations and a nation's fiscal struggles, social values and political ideologies as geopolitical issues seep into every aspect of the beautiful game. Partly, the task was personal. 'It's such a cliche,' D'Urso says, 'But it's so much more than football [to me]. It's like the North Star in my life. And I think that's true for so many people. Like, my family have all moved houses, relatives have died, all those sorts of things ... but I will always have one physical place that will be the same as when I went for the first time when I was four. And that's my community.' READ MORE For most of football's history, the idea of a non-partisan recognition would have been beyond belief. From its earliest days, the game was a tribal affair, defined by who is in and, more importantly, who is out. In the modern era, D'Urso argues, the cultural currency of jerseys has given credence to a universality, allowing us, in no small way, to think about one singular idea in a world divided. 'Culture is entirely fragmented at the minute,' he says. 'If you see, say, a great TV programme, there are so many streaming platforms now that chances are your friend isn't subscribed to the same thing. Same with music, art ... [but] football runs counter to that.' Joey D'Urso: 'I wasn't expecting to see a football shirt with a Pablo Escobar protege on the back' Yet, with this, the possibility for infiltration runs deep. With 3.5 billion fans worldwide and a vintage jerseys market booming, the ability to connect millions of fans with a positive idea of totalitarianism or climate change has never been easier. 'This Schalke jersey has Gazprom across the front, which is a Russian gas company, and it kind of tells the story of how Russia , essentially, bought off Germany through cheap gas,' D'Urso says. 'That manifested itself in Germany basically being soft on Russia compared to other European countries. Then, when Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, this all imploded spectacularly. Photograph: Manuel Queimadelos Alonso/Getty 'In Germany today, there are people with this shirt with a blue sticker over it, because they're embarrassed to be wearing something that's deeply linked to the invasion of Ukraine.' In Medellín, Colombia, the methods were more subtle. 'An old kit from Envigado FC features a little silhouette of a man on the back,' D'Urso says with a smile. 'That man was a drug warlord whose son, the owner of the club, ordered him to be on it to honour his father. The club was later sanctioned by the American government for big-time organised crime, resulting in the club not being allowed to have any sponsors for years. And that club is where James Rodriguez, top scorer at 2014 World Cup, got his start. But yeah ... I wasn't expecting to see a football shirt with a Pablo Escobar protege on the back.' Even clubs that seemed untouchable weren't immune to political agendas. 'Barcelona at one stage didn't have a sponsor,' he says. 'And then suddenly they had Unicef, and they actually paid Unicef . And this was worn by the best football team of all time: Messi, Iniesta, Guardiola. In his book, D'Urso urges readers to look at the examples he shares to change the way we might see the world 'But then, when Qatar was awarded the World Cup in 2010, Barcelona suddenly had Qatar Foundation and Qatar Airways on their shirt. In that way, sponsors in particular and shirts in general, kind of have the ability to warn you of the future. From lofty ideals to selling out to a Middle Eastern oil state.' These globalising impulses have undoubtedly shaped all sport, not just soccer. However, what brings it closer to home for Irish fans is the Borders chapter, framed around Rangers FC and Club Deportivo Palestino. 'Football is often the embodiment of borders,' D'Urso says. 'And, weirdly, from what I understand, it's that the better the politics become [of a place], the more toxic the football is. Club Deportivo Palestino, in Santiago, has a huge Palestinian diaspora, and they recently had green and white in their kit because they have a kind of link with the fan base of Celtic . It's people expressing their identity. And, to me, it's better that people do that through football than through like, violence in the streets.' Inevitably, kits will continue to fascinate for some time – perhaps as the single unifying act of an unstable sport in an unstable world. As a tribalist among the like-minded, D'Urso urges 3.5 billion of his closest friends to take the 22 examples he shares in the book to change the way one might see the world. 'Every shirt tells a different story,' he says, with a smile. 'With this book, I'd like to give people the tools to find out those stories for themselves.' In 28 Years Later, Brexit Britain runs screaming towards its Apocalypse Now. What took it so long?

'Donald Trump is going to make punk rock great again,' the mouthy musician Amanda Palmer said after that individual was elected president of the United States for the first time. You think? In the same year, 2016, the United Kingdom elected to leave the European Union. Nobody suggested that punk would feast on incoming catastrophe, but there was great wailing from the literati. 'I think it's a self-inflicted wound,' Martin Amis said. 'I don't like the nostalgic utopia.' Ian McEwan described Brexit as 'the most pointless, masochistic ambition ever dreamed of in the history of these islands'. One imagined poets and choreographers collapsing in despair up and down the aisles of north London's classier off-licences. READ MORE Brexit would now reap the artistic whirlwind. Right? The Europhobic voters of Stoke-on-Trent will feel silly when they hear about that ballet concerning lengthened queues for non-EU passport holders at Florence airport. Worthwhile anti-Trump culture proved thin on the ground in that president's opening term. There was even less Brexit-bashing art in the aftermath of 'Britain's fateful decision' (to use the approved cliche). We did get a great many popular – and good – nonfiction books on the mechanics of the referendum, its potential aftermath and its moral implications. Fintan O'Toole, of this jurisdiction, had a big hit with Heroic Failure: Brexit and the Politics of Pain . Tim Shipman's All Out War: The Full Story of How Brexit Sank Britain's Political Class did what the title claimed in exhaustive fashion. There was a lot more where those came from. But few were writing operas or novels on the topic. We are still awaiting the first great anti-Brexit protest song. These thoughts are prompted by the arrival this week of the second sequel to Danny Boyle 's classic zombie flick 28 Days Later. It hardly needs to be said that Alex Garland's script for 28 Years Later does not halt the violence to ponder article 50 of the Treaty on European Union. [ 28 Years Later review: Danny Boyle's rattling zombie epic never lets up in pace or invention Opens in new window ] We are dealing in allegory here – an unmistakable and blackly hilarious allegory. The mindless zombies have been driven back to Britain from the Continent. (I didn't catch if, like the Romans, the rage virus left Ireland uncolonised.) One proud island off the northeast coast has, however, kept the hordes at bay and, in the process, retreated into a class of mid-20th-century patriotic nostalgia. Boyle intercuts a reading of Rudyard Kipling's poem Boots with clips from Laurence Oliver's Henry V. 'Gentlemen in England now a-bed shall think themselves accurs'd they were not here!' And so on. The film-maker confirmed his intentions to El País newspaper. 'We haven't made a political film,' he said . 'But we've used the current world as a reference, how we behave in it, what cultural legacy we're going to leave behind. Brexit has constrained us, locked us in, and that's what 28 Years Later is about.' A stubborn Mancunian of Irish descent, Boyle will care not a whit if the thumping allegory upsets leavers, not least because it in no way impedes the hurtling progress of the core narrative. He can feel proud of showing how the subject can be addressed without dragging your film into po-faced agitprop. Why have so few artists attempted anything similar over the past decade? Have a look at Anish Kapoor's A Brexit, A Broxit, We All Fall Down from 2019. Created for the Guardian newspaper, it works an enormous cleft along the spine of Britain. The meaning is clear – a little too clear for an artist of Kapoor's subtlety. In 2017 the unavoidable, pseudonymous Banksy delivered a mural showing a sculptor chipping away one star from the EU flag. Not his most affecting piece. British novelists proved reluctant to engage so directly with the subject. It remains an oddity that Ali Smith's Autumn , frequently labelled the first post-Brexit novel, was published just four months after the vote. Alex Preston, writing in the Financial Times, marvelled 'that writing this good could have come so fast'. No deluge of Brexit fiction flowed into the succeeding abyss of negotiation. Plenty of films seemed to offer comment on the Brexit mindset. You could see Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk making the case for either side. The triumphant Paddington 2 played as an argument for diversity and inclusivity. But 28 Years Later really does feel like the closest thing to mainstream cinematic engagement with Brexit since the country voted on June 23rd, 2016. Maybe the argument against feels too much an obsession of elite London dinner parties. Maybe the wider subject is too complex to address as allegory or side narrative. Most likely audiences (and creators) just got sick of it long before the documents were finally signed. It's not Vietnam. Nobody was going to make an Apocalypse Now about Brexit. Though Boyle has come closer than seemed possible.
