Rajkot Fort in Maharashtra shut again 41 days after Shivaji statue inauguration, ground cave-in sparks safety fears

Indian Express3 hours ago

Barely 41 days after the inauguration of a newly rebuilt 91-foot statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the refurbished Rajkot Fort in Malvan, Sindhudurg district, has once again been shut to the public for urgent repairs.
The closure was prompted by a partial cave-in near the statue's platform last week, raising concerns about the structural integrity and safety of the site. The Public Works Department (PWD) has issued a notice stating that the fort will be closed to tourists starting Sunday, with repair work expected to continue for several days.
The damage was visible last week after heavy rains when a large crater emerged on the left side of the pathway around the statue. While the statue itself remains intact, viral videos showing the sunken ground have sparked widespread public criticism.
Anil Patil, Collector, Sindhudurg, had attributed the incident to recent heavy rains. Although authorities initially claimed that the issue had been rectified, the decision was later made to suspend public access to carry out comprehensive repairs.
The 91-foot bronze statue, depicting the sword-bearing Maratha warrior, was inaugurated on May 11, just eight months after the earlier 35-foot version collapsed in August 2024 amid heavy rainfall and strong winds. That statue was unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in December 2023. The incident led to the arrests of both the statue's sculptor and its structural consultant amid a political firestorm, prompting the government to build a new structure.
Constructed at a cost of Rs 31.75 crore, the new statue was unveiled by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. However, this second structural failure has revived criticism from Opposition leaders, including former Shiv Sena UBT Kudal MLA Vaibhav Naik.
'The state has so far spent over Rs 100 crore on this project, yet the ground around the statue has caved in. This raises serious questions about the quality of construction. Forts built during Shivaji Maharaj's reign have stood strong for centuries, yet structures built today with a supposed 100-year guarantee are failing. A thorough investigation must be conducted.' Naik said.

Maoists will not get respite even during monsoon: Home Minister Amit Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday reiterated the government's resolve to eradicate Maoism by March 31 next year and announced that the rebels will not get a breather even during monsoon. Speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony of National Forensic Science University (NFSU) and Central Forensic Science Laboratory's Raipur campus, HM Shah said, 'Unlike pervious years, when the anti-Maoist operations used to get slowed down during monsoon, I want to assure the people that we will not let the rebels sleep even during rains.' The Home Minister also hailed Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai and his deputy Vijay Sharma for sharpening the operations against Maoism in the state. 'They have encouraged police forces, and I congratulate the two on behalf of the Central government,' he said. HM Shah also appealed to the Maoists to surrender and join the mainstream by availing the state government's rehabilitation package. 'I assure all those rebels who have surrendered that the Centre and State government will fulfil their commitment to them,' he said. Earlier, he called upon Chhattisgarh youth to become adventurous in setting up enterprises and start-ups for bringing about a new wave of investment in the state. He highlighted the launch of 'Mind-to-Market' i-Hub incubation set-up in the state, claiming that it would hold the hands of startup launchers and nurture youth to become MSME owners. Crediting the creation of Chhattisgarh to former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee, HM Shah praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for shaping the modern-day state. Addressing the inauguration event, the Home Minister said that Sunday marked a significant day as three key projects impacting the criminal justice system of the state were being launched. 'The foundation stone of NFSU and CFSL is being laid, along with the launch of the transit campus of the University in which 180 students will start their education in courses like and in cyber and forensic science, among others,' he said. 'I want the youth to trust PM Modi and understand that their degree from NFSU will be a guarantee for their job,' he said. The NFSU campus is proposed to be built at a cost of Rs 145 crore by the Centre, while the CFSL will be built at a cost of Rs 123 crore. HM Shah said PM Modi's vision for Viksit Bharat 2047 cannot be achieved without timely delivery of justice and the three new criminal laws -- Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023, effective July 1, 2024 -- are a step in that direction. The setting up of a forensic university and lab is a step in the direction of timely justice and establishing an evidence-based criminal justice system in which verdict is delivered within three years, he said.

Dispute between Dayanidhi Maran and Kalanithi Maran is worth Rs...; who is richer among the two brothers?

Dayanidhi Maran has accused Kalanithi Maran of fraudulently acquiring 12 lakh shares of Sun TV network in 2003. DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran has sent a legal notice to his elder brother Kalanithi Maran– the billionaire chairman and founder of Sun Group, one of India's largest media conglomerates– alleging that Kalanithi committed fraud in 2003, when he received 12 lakh shares of the Sun TV network, allegedly without the board's approval. How much money is dispute worth? In the legal notice, Dayanidhi Maran claimed that before the share transfer, Kalanithi Maran did not have single share of the company to his name, but fraudulently managed to acquire 12 lakh equity shares without board approval. At the time, Sun TV shares traded at Rs 10 apiece, and the company were valued at around Rs 3000 crore. Thus the dispute between the Maran brothers is worth Rs 3000 crore. Dayanidhi alleges that in 2003, immediately after the demise of their father, Murasoli Maran, Kalanithi fraudulently registered 12 lakh shares in his name, when the family was still in mourning. Kalanithi allegedly flouted corporate laws and transferred the shares without permission from the company's board. As per Dayanidhi's notice, Kalanithi Maran has received Rs 5,926 crore as dividend in 20 years, including Rs 455 crore in 2024 alone. Who are the Sun TV stakeholders? In his notice, Dayanidhi asserted that after their father's demise, both brothers should have received and equal 50-50 stake in the company, but Kalanithi fraudulently transferred 12 lakh equity shares to his name, which gave him a 70 percent ownership in the business. His stake has currently expanded to 75 percent. Former Union Minister and DMK leader Murasoli Maran, launched TV Network in 1993, which currently operates 37 satellite channels, ranging from entertainment to news and infotainment, reaching around 14 crore viewers across the country. Over the years, the Sun Group has also expanded into radio, newspapers and DTS broadcasting. Currently, the market cap of the Sun TV network is pegged at around Rs 24,000 crore. Dayanidhi Maran or Kalanithi Maran– who is wealthier? According to Forbes, Sun Group chief Kalanithi Maran has a net worth of $2.8 billion, making him richer than his brother Dayanidhi Maran, at least on paper. Additionally, Kalanithi Maran's daughter, Kavya Maran, owns the Sunrisers Hyderabad IPL franchise, and the Maran family recently acquired a county cricket team in England for Rs 1,094 crore. Kalanithi receives an annual package of Rs 87.50 crore from Sun TV Network, while his wife Kaveri Maran, who is an executive director in the company, also gets an annual package of Rs 87.50 crore. In contrast, Kalanithi's younger brother, Dayanidhi Maran, has total assets worth Rs 11.67 crore, in addition to a bank balance of Rs 2 crore, and gold worth Rs 50 lakh, according to mandatory declarations he made ahead of the 2023 state polls. Further, Dayanidhi has invested Rs 60 lakh is shares of a few companies, and has Rs 2 lakh in PF account and an L&T policy of Rs 6 lakh. According to details, the DMK leader has movable assets worth Rs 3.65 crore and a 3,000 square feet land in terms of immovable property.

Chhattisgarh: HM Shah lays foundation stone for NFSU campus, state forensic lab

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday laid the foundation stone for the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) campus in Naya Raipur, marking a significant step in strengthening the criminal justice infrastructure in Chhattisgarh. The Rs 350 crore project, to be built over 40 acres, is part of the Centre's broader strategy to enhance scientific investigation and law enforcement capabilities across India. State Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai shared a short video of his visit on his X handle. The campus in Raipur is expected to offer advanced training, research, and education in forensic sciences, catering not only to Chhattisgarh but to neighbouring states as well. Alongside the NFSU ceremony, HM Shah also performed bhoomi-pujan for a state-run forensic laboratory, which will serve as a vital support system for law enforcement agencies in the region. These developments are part of the Centre's commitment to integrating science and technology into policing, and ensuring faster, more accurate investigations and convictions. Later in the day, the Home Minister chaired a high-level meeting with Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai and top officials of police from Chhattisgarh and neighbouring states to review ongoing anti-Naxal operations. The meeting touched upon coordinated actions between central forces and state police, the surrender policy, and rehabilitation strategies in affected districts. On occasion, HM Shah has reiterated his earlier deadline—March 31, 2026—for the complete eradication of Naxalism from India, underlining the importance of intelligence-driven, forensic-led policing in achieving this goal. On Monday, the Home Minister is expected to visit Narayanpur district, where he will interact with BSF (Border Security Force) personnel and villagers in the remote Abujhmad region. HM Shah is set to visit Irkbhatti, a remote region in Chhattisgarh's Narayanpur district, on Monday, where he is expected to spend nearly three hours engaging with local communities and security personnel. During his visit, the Home Minister will hold direct interactions with members of the Abujhmariya tribal community to gain first-hand insights into the implementation of the state's flagship welfare initiative, the 'Niyad Nella Narayan Yojana.' He will also distribute educational materials to local children as part of the government's outreach to underserved populations in insurgency-affected areas. In a gesture of appreciation, the Home Minister will meet with the security personnel involved in the operation that led to the neutralisation of Naxal commander Basavaraju. Since the BJP government took office in Chhattisgarh, over 427 Maoists have been killed in joint operations, with authorities stressing that development and modern policing go hand in hand.
