Sheinbaum reaffirms commitment to Mexicans' human rights after detainee's death in US
MEXICO CITY, June 14, (Xinhua): Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Friday reiterated that her government will always seek "respect for the human rights" of Mexicans abroad, following the death of a Mexican citizen in custody at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center.
"All investigations have to be done and we will always seek respect for the human rights of Mexicans abroad," said the president at her daily press conference in Mexico City.
The Foreign Ministry of Mexico on Thursday expressed regret over the death of the Mexican citizen on June 7 while in custody at the ICE detention center in the state of Georgia.
The ministry added that the Mexican Consulate in Atlanta had been notified and consular personnel had established communication with local authorities, the ICE, as well as with the deceased's family, to clarify the facts and provide legal advice and support to the family.

Cambodia closes 2 more border checkpoints with Thailand
PHNOM PENH, June 22, (Xinhua): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said on Sunday that two more border crossings with Thailand were completely shut down amid an ongoing border dispute between the two ASEAN member states. Hun Manet said the Thai army Saturday night informed the governor of Cambodia's Oddar Meanchey province about its unilateral decision to close Choub Korki border checkpoint from Sunday onwards. "I agreed with the governor's response that we will also close that border checkpoint permanently," Hun Manet said in a post on his official social media platforms. "I also ordered the governor to inform the Thai side that Cambodia has also decided to close another checkpoint at Choam, altogether with Choub Korki checkpoint from today onwards," he added. The Cambodian prime minister said that since June 7, the Thai army has unilaterally implemented closures of border checkpoints between Cambodia and Thailand without much consideration of its negative effects on the people of both countries. "It has never been Cambodia's intention to cause difficulty for people in our both countries who need to use border checkpoints. Yet, if the Thai army continues to use this method to put pressure on Cambodia, Cambodia can answer accordingly at any time," Hun Manet said. The Thai army has announced the closure of the trade point at Chong Sai Taku in Buriram province, effective from Saturday. In a statement on Sunday, the Thai army said that it has implemented control measures for opening and closing all types of crossing points along the Thai-Cambodian border to comply with the security situation. Thai media reported on Sunday that the Thai army prepared to close two more crossing points in response to the Cambodian side's announcement to close two border crossings. Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday issued a public advisory urging Thai citizens to avoid non-essential travel to Cambodia due to heightened tensions between the two neighboring countries. In a statement, the ministry called on Thai nationals currently in Cambodia to exercise increased caution, avoid protest sites or high-risk areas, and closely follow the developments through official channels. Border tensions between Cambodia and Thailand have mounted recently after soldiers of both countries briefly exchanged gunfire in a disputed border area on May 28, resulting in the death of a Cambodian soldier.

UN peacekeeping mission condemns deadly attack on peacekeepers in CAR
YAOUNDE, June 22, (Xinhua): The UN peacekeeping mission in the Central African Republic (CAR) on Saturday strongly condemned a deadly attack on its Friday patrol in the country's north that killed a Zambian peacekeeper. The patrol, part of the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA), came under fire from unidentified gunmen. Two Zambian peacekeepers were seriously injured and one of them later died from his injuries, the agency said in a statement. "This is the third deadly attack on MINUSCA patrols since the beginning of 2025," it said, noting the agency's head, Valentine Rugwabiza, warned that attacks on UN peacekeepers "may constitute war crimes under international law." Rugwabiza, also the UN secretary-general's special representative for the Central African Republic, called on the country's authorities "to make every effort to identify the perpetrators of these acts so that they can be swiftly brought to justice," said the statement, extending condolences to Zambia. The Central African Republic has recently seen a spike in serious security incidents. In separate attacks in February and March, a Tunisian and a Kenyan peacekeeper were killed.

Iran, Zionists trade massive blows
TEL AVIV/TEHRAN: The Zionist bombed nuclear targets in Iran on Thursday and Iran fired missiles and drones at the Zionist entity, as a week-old air war escalated with no sign yet of an exit strategy from either side. Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping on Thursday strongly condemned the Zionist attacks on Iran in a phone call and stressed the need for a diplomatic solution, Moscow and Beijing said. Putin and Xi 'strongly condemn (the Zionist entity's) actions', Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov told reporters after the call. He added that Moscow and Beijing believed the end to the hostilities 'should be achieved exclusively by political and diplomatic means'. Xi told Putin that a ceasefire was the 'top priority' and urged the Zionist entity to halt its attacks, Chinese state media reported. 'Promoting a ceasefire and cessation of hostilities is the top priority. Armed force is not the correct way to resolve international disputes,' Xi said, according to China's state news agency Xinhua. 'Parties to the conflict, especially (the Zionist entity), should cease hostilities as soon as possible to prevent a cyclical escalation and resolutely avoid the spillover of the war,' he added.
